Calm to choppy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. With a moderate breeze of 15 knots out of the southwest, rising to a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the northwest during the second race, The North Sea regions were generally well behaved as one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day. The lone DNF, recorded during the first race, was from a skipper pulling her boat right after the start. The crowds that gathered along the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, thrilled in the energetic fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta and North Sea Cat Fight 01 courses, was made up of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows. One TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Race Notes:
Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn due to a Rule 10 On Opposite Tacks foul immediately after the last mark on the course.

10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.

Daenerys (blondij Resident) and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) finished tied with 9 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
blondij Resident 6 3
Aymalie Resident 3 6

In the last race, Daenerys breaks the tie with Aymalie with her third place finish over Aymalie’s sixth place finish.

  1. Exciting races, both! As can tell by the small time intervals on finish. Thanks for all that to the lovely RD crew led by Cryptic 😉
I read that there were some close fights behind (ie the protest in race 2) and I sure had some tight moments too, especially at the end of both races. Congrats to Max for his sportsmanship, leaving me room inside at the last but one mark to pass him after he led nearly all the race! I was lucky he messed up a couple tacks which allowed me to come back in contention after a terrible 1st mark rounding (mark which I hit, putting myself at the back of the fleet). Too bad, my start had been ok.
I feels good to be able to come back from behind: it means the tactical choices were right and well executed. Cheers and until next time!!

  2. The duel with Max was in race 2. In race 1, I fought just behind Aymalie, with Max not far on my 6 all along (but never too close, luckily for me). And the final positions were decided only in the last leg of the race where I finally took the lead on the 1st gybe, while Max caught up with Aymalie in the final meters of the race! Quite the finish!
