Trudeau Regatta – April 28th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Regatta, in The North Sea, saw some fun and exciting racing along with some great sim weather. This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of four 12 Metre’s, with a NY30, a Leetle Cat II, and a Patchogue II rounding out the fleet.

The first race, on course NS-1b, saw some fun racing between Rosie’s Leetle Cat II and Madelin’s Patchogue II towards the rear, with Omar’s NY30 keeping just ahead of them both. Unfortunately, Peter was over the line early and had to go around to start again, then ran into some trouble and was ultimately a DNF.

The second race, on course NS-Wc Reach, saw some late arrivals in Ruletter and Lez, with their 12 Metre’s. The 12 Metre pack was close, with several position changes between Rulette and myself, with some great displays of wind shadowing. Ultimately, Peter pulled out way ahead and had clear air until the end.

Cole arrived just towards the end of race 2, so it was decided to hold a third race with just 12 meter’s, no points, just fun. Once again, wind shadowing was at play with several position changes due to it through out the fleet.

Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta – April 27th 2016

This week saw favorable sim weather, large fleets, and exciting sailing for the Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta in The North Sea. The sims were well behaved during the small boat race, with no crashes, however we saw two DNF’s due to crashes in the big boat race. Both races saw large turnouts with fifteen for the small boat race and eight for the big boat race. Plus, as a bonus, Marci, the owner of Blue Lagoon Marina, offered up a L$500 for first place in the small boat race.

The small boat fleet, fifteen strong, was comprised of a slim majority of four Bandit IF’s, with three Melges-24’s following, and two Patchogue II’s, a Leetle Cat II, a Bandit 25, a Nacra 17, a Laser One, a Dolphin Moth, and a Flying Tako making up the remainder of the fleet. Racing was tight, on North Sea Olympic Course Long, between not only several in the IF pack but also the Melges-24 pack. The IF pack saw Red and Carlota neck and neck for most of the race before Carlota slowly grew a marginal lead towards the second leg. The Melges-24 pack saw Beane, Lucy, and Makhno keeping close, all the way up to the finish, with Beane finishing slightly ahead of Lucy and Makhno. We also saw a new racer this week, Song Charron, racing in her Patchogue II. We hope that Song has learned a thing or two on her first race and we look forward to seeing her next time. Remember, centreboards upwind help 😉

The big boat fleet, was well mixed and showing some America’s Cup heritage, with two AC45’s, an ACA33, and a IACC. However, the majority of the fleet was made up of three One Design 65’s, showing some offshore blood, and also an Open 60 making up the remainder. Racing was competitive, with the the One Design 65 pack mixing it up with Mahkno’s Open 60 for most of the course, North Sea Butterfly. Unfortunately, the sims turned a bit pesky as we saw our only DNF’s, due to crashes, for the day, with ViV and Lampoon.

Bandit Regatta – April 25th 2016

This weeks Bandit Regatta, in The North Sea, had some choppy sim weather at the start but some great racing throughout. Unfortunately the sim waves caused 2 DNF’s in the first race and one in the second race. This weeks fleet was made up of six Bandit IF’s, two Bandit 55’s and one Bandit 25 initially, until the second race when Rosie changed to her Bandit 25 from her Bandit IF.

The first race, NS Short Loop, which is becoming a favorite for the IF sailors, featured 3 laps. Close racing was on hand between Angelic, Alexandre, Simya, Carlota, ViV, and Rosie until Angelic started to gain towards the second lap. Then, by the third lap, the IF pack was starting to spread fairly far, with Rosie succumbing to a DNF with a crash.

The second race, NS-WC Reach, saw a smaller fleet as some had to partake to RL endeavors, but featured a great battle between Carlota and Angelic through the whole course. Angelic ultimately pulled it out at the end, coming across before Carlota.

Trudeau Regatta – April 21st 2016

This weeks Trudeau Regatta, in The North Sea, saw some really fun tight racing and smooth sim weather. This weeks fleet was made up of five Trudeau 12 Metre’s and one Patchogue II.

The first race, NS-SOL-13A, saw the 12m pack spread out with some tight racing up front between Peter and Cole, and further back between Sue, Arya, and myself. Peter went on to ultimately take line honors with Cole just behind him.

The second race, NS-SOL-13B, saw more spirited racing in the 12 Metre pack. n the final leg, the downwind run to the finish from the southern tip of the island in Ziziphus, Arya and I were neck and neck until the finish line. I just squeaked out ahead of Arya in what was a really fun drag race to the line.

This week we are bringing the Trudeau Regatta in line with the same points system we use for our Bandit Regatta. Points will be awarded according to the final handicap adjusted finish in each race. Skippers who do not finish a race, or are disqualified score the number of boats in the race plus one. Points earned in both races will be combined and then the final placement will be sorted by lowest score. Point ties will be decided using Appendix A8 Series Ties from Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing. Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.

This weeks Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta had some clear sim weather, fun racing, and no crashes in either small boat or big boat race.

The small boat fleet was pretty evenly mixed with three Bandit IF’s, two Nacra 17’s, two Melges-24’s, and a Dolphin Moth. Racing was close between Lucy and Makhno, in their Melges-24’s, culminating in a thrilling finish with both them crossing the finish line at nearly the same moment.

The big boat fleet was comprised of two Trudeau 12 Metre’s, an Open 60, and a One Design 65. Makhno got off to a great start and never let up ultimately taking line honors and the overall first place with handicap.

Bandit Regatta – April 18th 2016

Smooth sailing and great sim weather featured in this weeks Bandit Regatta in The North Sea. The field for both races finished with not a single crash, highlighting some really great sim weather in The North Sea today. Today was also our monthly ‘There and Back Again’ course series featuring NS Breadnut to Eden Auk and NS Eden Auk to Breadnut using both start lines and a different wind for each race. This weeks fleet was made up of four Bandit IF’s, two Bandit 25’s and a lone Bandit 60 to make up the remainder.

The first race, NS Breadnut to Eden Auk, saw some great tight racing between Carlota, Red, and Akim in their IF’s along with Rosie in her 25. Rosie got her 25 moving to pull off a wonderful pass right before the yellow pin in Mammia to get past Carlota.

The second race, NS Eden Auk to Breadnut, saw some really close racing between the IF pack, with Red, Akim, Araton and Carlota all exhaning positions until the middle of the course when Red extended her final lead with Akim following close behind.

We would also like to mention again that using autopilot, or any type of auto trimming feature, in The North Sea for any races here, will result in that boat’s disqualification from that race.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – April 14th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta, in The North Sea, saw slightly choppy sim weather for the first race but cleared up for the second with some great sailing. The fleet was comprised of two 12 Metre’s, two Patchogue II’s, and a Leetle Cat II.

During the first race, racing was tight between Arya and I, on our 12 Metre’s, until a bad sim crossing caused my DNF. Arya was ahead at this point, on the final leg of North Sea’s NS-SOL-13C, and sailed on to a great finish. Racing was tight as well between Asami and Petra in their Patch II’s, with Petra finally passing Asami and pulling away on the second leg of the course.

In the second race, North Sea Butterfly, Arya and I both got off to great starts and were neck and neck for the entire race. Asami went as crew for Petra in this race, in Petra’s Patch II, and some spirited competition from PeterC in his Leetle Cat.

This week also marks the introduction of prize plaques for the Trudeau Classic Regatta. These will be awarded to the first through third place finishers in each race.

Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta – April 13th 2016

We had some really great sailing weather in the sims of The North Sea, this week, for the Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta. We had no crashes, with everyone in both fleets finishing. This week also sees us replacing our customery trophy cups for first through third place finishes, with new prize plaques made by Petra, for first through third place finishes.

The small boat fleet was 10 strong, being made up of four Bandit IF’s, two Nacra 17’s, a Quest 2m, a Melges-24, a Flying Shadow, and a Dolphin Moth. Racing was tight throughout the fleet with Cole and Lalie racing close together in their Nacra’s before Cole pulled away. The IF pack was closely contested between Red, Carlota, Ian and Anabelle before Red and Carlota pulled out ahead with Red finishing just ahead of Carlota.

The big boat fleet was made up of a majority of One Design 65’s, with a Trudeau 12 Metre, an ACA33, and a Bandit 60 completing the remainder. Racing was very exciting between the One Design 65’s with Arya, Beane, and Ian remaining close until Arya finally slipped ahead. Unfortunately, Ian had a navigation mishap and wound up being behind in the end.

Bandit Regatta – April 11th 2016

This weeks Bandit Regatta in The North Sea saw some smooth sim weather with fun racing. This weeks fleet was made up entirely of Bandit IF’s, with 6 in the first and 5 in the second race.

In the first race, racing was tight between Julia and Red, with Julia finally pulling away on the final leg. At the rear of the fleet, Rosie and Anabelle were battling neck and neck for position with Rosie just getting ahead at the end.

In the second race, racing again was tight between Julia and Red with Julia once again finishing ahead towards the end. Rosie was closely racing Ian until the very end when Ian succumbed to a crash and a DNF.

This week we also see the introduction of new prizes for the Bandit Regatta. Prize plaques will now be awarded in place of the previously used t-shirts. The prize plaques will be sent out by Petra, after the results are posted for the regatta on race day.

Due to the field being composed entirely of IF’s this week, handicaps will not be included nor are needed in the results.
