A great turnout for spectators and sailors, with some nice mild sim sailing weather, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. In light of both the end of Summer/Savings Time1 in Europe and some lingering instability still in the back-end pipes for Secondlife, from this weekends inventory and login server outages, we still saw some great crowds gather on the Poseidon Centre Spectator pier and small race dock, in the Eden Jakana region. Likewise, this weeks fleet turnout, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course and a lap on the North Sea Olympic Mirror course, was also great with a majority makeup of six Bandit IFs. Two Bandit 25Rs and one Bandit 50/3 made up the remainder of this weeks fleet. The regions of the North Sea responded in kind and behaved for the most part with only one DNF (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, during the second race as Rugger crashed halfway through the course.

1Note: Secondlife Time (SLT) is one hour earlier for everyone who has rolled their clocks back, for the duration of this week, until the US, Canada, Mexico, and most of the Caribbean rolls their clocks back on Sunday, November 3rd. Please be aware that North Sea events will therefore be an hour earlier for you.

Race Notes:
Ian (IanPixel Resident) and Carlota (Carlota Dufaux) both finished tied with 4 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Carlota Dufaux 2 2

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Ian’s favor with having a first place finish over Carlota’s second place finish as her best.

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) finished tied with 13 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

It was Saturday afternoon again with eight bandit IFs at the starting line, four of which had crew, we could expect spectacularly. The wind was good and the sea was calm. After a good start of the first race, Ian quickly took the lead to not give it up until the finish. Rugger and Carlota fought for second place in the race. Unfortunately, Sasha fell back in the rear after a very good start.

In the second race, things started to get fierce right from the start. With five boats abreast, they all tried to reach the starting line first. Julie immediately searched the space of the sea and returned first. Later followed by Ian and Rugger. Carlota surprised Ian and Rugger at the first buoy to be the first to complete it. Behind them a fleet of 4 boats arose that were matched.

A stray Bandit, who came from Eden, bumped into the IFs. I would like to point out to sailors that sailboats in a race always have right of way in The North Sea.

With one DNF (Did Not Finish) and a 360 it was again a sporting if not successful day in The North Sea

Perseverance in light of a grid storm highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of the North Sea behaved admirably in the face of a sudden unscheduled inventory maintenance that caused three DNFs (Did Not Finish) on they day, two in the first race and one in the second. The fleet-foiled frisky feline fleet persevered, however, to the delight of the spectators gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and the small racing dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, as well as those gathered along the western beach of Tortuga Bay Airport, in the Eden Guillemot region, and the newly built marina in the Eden Murrelet region. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline course and newly created North Sea Skate1 course, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three sailing with crew and three sailing single-handed respectively. One lone TMS Nacra 17 made up the remainder of this weeks fleet.

1 Newly created by Cryptic and the first course to sail through the newly added western regions of The North Sea. A Skate is a type of ray native to the North Sea and also critically endangered.

Another great spectator turnout, with mild region sailing weather, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Crowds gathered on the small race dock and the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, continuing a recent several week long trend of large onlookers. The regions of The North Sea did not disappoint, as only two of the three DNFs (Did Not Finish) on the day were due to skippers crashing, both of those occurring in the small boat portion. The third DNF on the day was recorded during the big boat portion owing to one of the more peculiar, yet easily remedied, incidents that we have witnessed in the North Sea.

During the big boat portion four skippers rounded the second course mark, the white buoy in the Eden Jakana region on the North Sea Triple Pink course, counter-clockwise instead of clockwise as indicated for the course. At the same time, ViV, in her Wildwind AC-45, rounded the mark correctly only to be collided head-on by one of the skippers who rounded incorrectly. ViV subsequently had to take a DNF as the scripts in her Wildwind ceased to function from the collision. The North Sea Triple Pink course is two years old, created and first raced in 2017. We have held countless races with this course, and this was the first time this number of skippers have incorrectly sailed this mark. One of the skippers erred on which way to round the mark, and the other three played follow the leader, instead of sailing their own course. The take away here is, race your race and your course, no matter how tempting it is to follow the boat in front of you.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was comprised of a split majority of three Bandit 25Rs and three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, two sailed with crew and one sailed single-handed respectively. One TMS Laser One, one TMS Nacra 17, one Shields Class, and one Bandit IF made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Meanwhile, this weeks big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Triple Pink course, was comprised of a majority of four Wildwind Open 60s. One ACA33, one Bandit 50/3, one TMS One Design 65, one Wildwind AC-45, and one Wildwind AC-62 made up the remainder of this weeks big boat fleet.

One final note: The North Sea has just added six new regions to its western edge (Eden Scoter, Eden Shag, Eden Razorbill, Eden Shearwater, Eden Murrelet, and Eden Prion) as well as picking up the Raspberry region from Fruit Islands. This increases the sailing area of the North Sea to 31 regions. The Eden Murrelet region is also the home to a new marina and the Naughties Sailing Academy, run by our very own Petra, more on both to come.

Editors Note: Isa (isab DeCuir) in fact did follow “the string back”1 to re-round the white buoy in Eden Jakana correclty. Isa is not DSQ (Disqualfied) and the results have been adjusted accordingly.

1 Rule 28.2, part of Rule 28 SAILING THE COURSE, contains what is most commonly referred to as the string rule.

28.2 SAILING THE COURSE
A string representing a boat’s track from the time she begins to
approach the starting line from its pre-start side to start until she
finishes shall, when drawn taut,
(a) pass each mark on the required side and in the correct order,
(b) touch each rounding mark, and
(c) pass between the marks of a gate from the direction of the
previous mark.
She may correct any errors to comply with this rule, provided she has
not finished.

Smooth sim sailing weather that turned stormy late, with another great spectator and fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The regions of the North Sea were well behaved during the first race as the only DNF (Did Not Finish) that was recorded was due to a skipper pulling his boat after the physical world interrupted him. The seas turned a bit stormy later in the second race, however, as the crossing from the Sapote region into the Mammea region acted up and stripped several skippers from their boats, resulting in two DNFs for the race. Nonetheless, the large gathering of spectators on hand, on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator pier in the Eden Jakana region, were still treated to some great racing from this weeks large fleet. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 02 and North Sea Olympic Course (Small), was comprised of a majority of seven Bandit IFs, two sailing with crew and five sailing single-handed respectively. Three Bandit 25Rs and one Bandit 60 made up the remainder of this weeks fleet.

It was a normal Saturday afternoon again and this time we had 6 boats, half of them with crew. We had a smooth start, but Max was a little too fast and had to turn around. Ian immediately took the lead and he had 3 boats on his heels, although no one seemed to come near him anymore, and there was a fight for the second place that was decided in DragonFruit. Red turned the buoy there second round.

The second start went a bit better for everyone, but it seemed as if Ian had missed the boat, but he again took the lead at the first buoy not to give it off again.

With two DNFs, and one DSQ, it was again not a successful but a sporting day in North Sea

Great sim sailing weather and a nice fleet turnout highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of the North Sea were well behaved for both portions of the regatta as no DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. One skipper did have some hiccups during the second race, however, when Candance crashed twice on crossings only to return with dogged determination to finish the race. The spectators gathered on the race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, were treated to some great frisky fleet-foiled feline racing. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and the North Sea Extreme course, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, five sailing single-handed and one with crew respectively. Two TMS Nacra 17s made up the remainder of this weeks fleet.

Smooth sim sailing weather and great fleet turnouts highlighted another North Sea Open Regatta this week. The North Sea regions continued their recent trend of well behaved sim sailing weather with only one DNF (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, when Cor lost his boat late into the big boat portion of the regatta. The racing itself was a site to behold for the spectators gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, as both fleets sailed past on multi-lap courses for each portion.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, was comprised of a slim majority of four Bandit IFs. Three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one sailing with crew and two sailing single-handed respectively, three Bandit 25Rs, two TMS Nacra 17s, and two Trudeau Patchogue IIs made up the remainder of this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was comprised of a majority of five Wildwind Open 60s. Three Trudeau 12 Metres, two Bandit 50/3s, one TMS One Design 65, and one Wilwdind AC-62 made up the remainder of this weeks big boat fleet.

A great fleet turnout with some great sim sailing weather highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 01 and North Sea Triple Pink courses, was comprised of a majority of six Bandit IFs, five sailing single-handed with one sailing with crew respectively. Four Bandit 25Rs, one Bandit 50/3, and one Bandit 60 made up the remainder of this weeks fleet. The regions of the North Sea were well behaved as only one of the four DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day was due to a sailor crashing out of Secondlife. The other three DNFs were due to a collision knocking a boat out of a race, and a new skipper getting lost in each race and pulling her boat from competition. The spectators on hand, gathered on the Poseidon Sailing Centre Pier in the Eden Jakana region, were treated to some grand large fleet racing as a result from the great weather and numerous boats.

Race Notes:
Max (Maximiliano Szondi) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for sailing an incorrect course, he sailed under the land bridge of the island in the Genip region instead of rounding the entirety of the island. As the North Sea 01 course is an island race, comprising two islands as the course marks, Max failed to round the second course mark resulting in an incorrect sailed course.

Lilita (lilita Cifuentes) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director for a Rule 11 foul at the start line, colloquially known as barging.

11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.

Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for committing a Rule 10 foul against Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) at the second course mark, the white buoy in the Eden Jakana region, that was so violent, the resulting collision knocked both boats out of the race causing both skippers to withdraw. As a result, Zimtzicke failed to complete a 360° penalty turn for the resulting foul.

10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.

It felt like Friday the 13th, but it was Saturday the 12th. The weather was good and we had a nice fleet of nine boats, four of then had crew. The starting signal sounded and we had a great start and a beautiful race until fate struck the first buoy and we had to restart the race.
After a good restart of the first race, Saturday went back to normal.
The second race also went well.

With three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQ (Disqualified), it was again a sporting if not successful day in the North Sea.
