Crew Me IF you can…August 26

Good fleet for this Saturday.  4 boats for the first race and 6 for the second one. This week course was Manta, SW wind 18 kts.

Race 1

After a very good start, Fanny and Justin took the lead heading to victory. Behind, Jimmy/Alice and Kayo/Laured were fighting for the second place, maintaining the suspense till the last downwind leg where team Jimmy took the lead. A great race and a lot of fun !

Race 2

if26_002.png

Kayo / laured – Starboard Soh and Annabele, ahead Alice / Jimmy and in first position Fanny and Justin.

2 more crews joined the second race. Alex/ Jackson and Rug/Sandrine.

This race was a fierce fight between all boats. Fanny and Justin took the lead followed closely by Alice and Jimmy. Behind, Kayo/Laured, Soh/Annabele were fighting for the 3 place. Alex was behind but far to be out of the race.

After passing the first mark almost at the same time, the 3 challengers boats continued to fight, Kayo and Soh engaged in a duel and Alex taking the opportunity to pass them both and start chasing the two leaders. Soon Alex was reaching Alice and Jimmy; behind Kayo was taking the lead on Soh. The fight between Alex and Alice was tense, hull against hull, but Alex was passing slowly upwind. Leeward, to stop the advance of Alex, Alice decided to tack: move that would generate later some discussion on the dock (always friendly but passionate).  Alice’s boat stopped by the collision, Alex/jack took the second position, but Alice/Jimmy didn’t quit, chasing Alex full speed and taking the 3 position. Kayo and Soh arrived a little later. For a strange reason, Rug boat was not taken by the line (i have no idea why – sorry Rugg :()

This was a great race ! Congratulation to all. For the next race, i will try to have a RD. It is clear that we have very competitive teams and a lot of fun duels and tactical moves !

Cat Fight August 25

august 25_003

Cryptic read to RD. From right to Left: Rayz on his FS, Kayo/Laured on the NS racing FS, behind Claire waiting for her crew and Dae and Mina behing Claire’s FS.

We had a good fleet this week. The usual kitties and some new comers. Let’s welcome Alex and King to the Cat Fight! Our RD was Cryptic. The condition for the first race, probably due to the number of boats were not very good and we unfortunately lost some crew. Again we are encouraging our participants to crew whenever it is possible. All races are opened to crew. And…good training for the Free Spirit Cup !

Race 1

First race. A few second after the start of the countdown.

CartFight-2 Gates

Wind: NW 315° 18kts

Type: Nacra/FS handicap

Boats:

FS – Rayz, Phil, Beane, Shaue, Ultra, Alex, Moon

FS/C – Dae w/Minna, Kayo w/Laured, Calire w/Looralie

The first race was intense, but we unfortunately, we lost some sailors, victim of the lag monster.

The race started for me like many others, a messy start in the pack. Quickly, I saw Claire and Loo passing us while we were fighting with our sails. Once the line behind us, we started to run after the leader. We passed the first buoy almost at the same time and turned quickly to take the first tack. Claire passed us again, while my crew was fighting with the foresail, trying some new gestures (please trash them). We continued the chase, crossing some other boats coming port to reach the first gate in second position. Behind us, I could hear Dae and Minna in hunting mode.

35995659763_96b05c6aba_b

Claire and Loo surfing over the line.

Quick gybe at the gate, Claire and Loo were already on their way ahead. I decided to take a less aggressive route and hopefully accelerate faster and win a few knots. Again, we passed the second gate in the second position and started the quick upwind leg after a very good turn. Claire was already tacking to the final buoy. More risk. I went further than usual, to make my second tack with a better angle. Mistake. Too far for little gain. We finally passed the line in second position followed by Dae and Minna, the third crew of the race.

After handicap calculation, Beane, take the first position, beating the 3 crew FS ! Congratulation ! Claire take the second position that I was hoping to have *grins*, pushing us to the 3 place followed by Dae and Moon.

Special mention to Alex who managed to finish with a wrong race wind !

Kingscliff passing the line (white Nacra). New member of the race ! Welcome.

The second race is a black whole. I crashed on a sim corner like a noob and spent the rest of the race trying to find my boat. I can say is that it was a short race. Dae and Mina took the first position after and before handicap, followed by Claire and Loo and Phil in his Nacra. Congratulation to Dae and Minna for this victory. Congratulation as well to King for this first race with us !

Beane and Palani speeding

The 3 race was crew only. 6 boats on the starting line. That is a good number !

The start was spectacular, all boats passing the line almost at the same time. Phil and Alex took the lead directly speeding like a space rocket. For us, it was a remake of the first race, chasing during the entire race, with not much hope to reach them. We finally finished in second position. Congratulation to Phil and Alex. A victory for his first Cat Fight ! Beane took the 3 place after some issues followed by Ultra and Claire. The team doesn’t  exactly know what happen to Claire and Loo but we do suspect some illegal stop for fishing.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – Aug 24th 2017

Cryptic (on the left) and Kristaly (on the right), both in Runa IVs, leading the fleet on the first leg of race 2 during the Trudeau Classic Regatta in The North Sea on Thursday, August 24th, 2017. Picture courtesy of Petra.

This weeks Trudeau Patchogue II Class Races turned into the Trudeau Classic Regatta as we raced the new Trudeau Runa IV along side the Patchogue II. Spectators turned out in large numbers to watch the new gaff rigged yawl put through her paces along the shores of Eden, gathering at Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus Region, the beaches in the Eden Albatros region, and the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region. The sims themselves started out slightly choppy, as three DNFs were attributed to crashes during the first race. The sim weather settled down, however, as smooth seas were prevalent during the second race. The fleet today was comprised of six Patchgoue IIs and six Runa IVs for the first race, with Kayo switching from her Runa IV to her Patchogue II in the second race.

From the left (in Trudeau boats): Cryptic (Runa IV), Rosie (Patchogue II), Laured (Patchogue II), Sophie (Patchogue II), Kristaly (Runa IV), Cor (Runa IV), Kayo (Runa IV), and Ultra (Runa IV). On the dock: Josh, Roama, Penny, Analyse, and Petra.

From the left (in Trudeau boats): Cryptic (Runa IV), Rosie (Patchogue II), Laured (Patchogue II), Sophie (Patchogue II), Kristaly (Runa IV), Cor (Runa IV), Kayo (Runa IV), and Ultra (Runa IV).
On the dock: Josh, Roama, Penny, Analyse, and Petra.

The first race, on the North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was used as the handicapping race for the Runa IV. The data gleaned from today resulted in the Runa IV receiving a handicap of 0.57 (All North Sea handicaps can be seen here North Sea Handicap Table). The fleet got off to a moderate start as some sailors were still getting used to their new Runa IVs and the Patchogue pack navigated among the larger yachts not usually present during this race. I got things started as I got my Runa IV across the start line at 00:00:13. Rosie, in her Patchogue II, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:22, followed by Ultra, in his Runa IV, at 00:00:34. Rugger, in his Patchogue II, was across the start line next at 00:00:34, followed by Neil, in his Patchogue II, at 00:00:42. Kayo, in her Runa IV, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:42, followed by Cor, in his Runa IV, at 00:00:54. Laured, in her Patchogue II, was across the start line next at 00:00:54, followed by Moon, in his Patchogue II, at 00:01:06, and Sophie, in her Patchogue II, at 00:01:09. Looralie and Kristaly, both in Runa IVs, were next to cross the start line at 00:01:16 and 00:01:39. I was in clean air as I got across the start line first and closest to the committee boat, in my Runa IV, and sprinted on, leading the fleet for the entire course. Rosie, in her Patchogue II, benefited from crossing right after me as she was in clean air herself and settled in behind me before the swifter upwind Runa IVs of Cor and Kristaly caught up and passed her. Ultra, in his Runa IV, fell back slightly in the fleet as Neil, in his Patchogue II, and Looralie, in her Runa IV, both made moves to pass him. Laured, in her Patchogue II, settled in just aft of Ultra with Rugger, in his Patchogue II, taken up the rear of the fleet. Kayo, in her Runa IV, Moon, in his Patchogue II, and Sophie, in her Patchogue II, all succumbed to crashes and recorded DNFs. I was first across the finish line, taking line honors, with Cor crossing the finish second. Kristaly crossed the finish line third, followed by Rosie, Neil, Looralie, Ultra, Laured, and Rugger.

The second race, on the North Sea Circle course, saw the fleet getting more comfortable with the Runa IVs. The fleet got off to a quicker start than they did in the first race with 9 of the 12 racers across the start line as 26 seconds ticked off the race clock. Kayo, now in her Patchogue II after using her Runa IV in the first race, got things started as she crossed the start line at 00:00:02. Laured, in her Patchogue II, and myself, in my Runa IV, were both next to cross the start line at 00:00:03. Kristaly, in her Runa IV, was across the start line next at 00:00:08 followed by Neil, in his Patchogue II, at 00:00:11. Rugger, in his Patchogue II, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:15, with Sophie, in her Patchogue II, right on his stern at 00:00:16. Moon, in his Patchogue II, was across the start line next at 00:00:23, followed by Cor, in his Runa IV, at 00:00:26. Rosie, in her Patchogue II, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:40, followed by Ultra, in his Runa IV, at 00:00:58, and Looralie in her Runa IV, at 00:01:10. Kayo, in her Patchogue II, and I, in my Runa IV, both crossed the start line closest to the committee boat on the windward side of the line putting us in clean air. However, Kayo wound up in my wind shadow as I was windward of her causing her to fall back as I took the lead. Kristaly, in her Runa IV, crossed the start line on the far leeward side, and was in clean air herself, taking up second as we both sprinted upwind towards the first tack to head west to the radio station island in the Soncoya region. Laured, in her Patchogue II, and Neil, in his Patchogue II, both fought closely as they settled in behind Kayo. Rugger, in his Patchogue II, got stuck in the wind shadow of several Runa IVs and fell back to the rear of the fleet. Sophie and Moon, both in Patchogue IIs, suffered the same fate as they settled in just ahead of Rugger, after having fallen back, with Moon leading Sophie. Cor, in his Runa IV, made moves to pass several as he ultimately settled in just aft of Kayo. Rosie, in her Patchogue II, was locked in a position battle with Ultra, in his Runa IV, for most of the course, with Ultra ultimately passing her. Kristaly, in her Runa IV, and myself, in my Runa IV, were locked in a battle for the entire course as Kristaly was right on my stern with her bowsprit nearly touching my boomkin on several occasions as we rounded the island marks on the course. I held on to squeak out a small lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors, as Kristaly crossed the finish line second. Kayo crossed the finish line third followed by Cor, Neil, Laured, Looralie, Ultra, Rosie, Moon, Sohpie, and Rugger.

Cat Fight – August 18

36532648771_64734b3307_h

Great fleet for this new edition of the Cat Fight. 12 boats lining up, old and new kitties, all waiting to unleash  the speed of their small catamaran. As usual our RD for this week was Cryptic. Looking at the number of boats she was about to have work !

Race 1

Race 1: CartFight-2 Gates

Wind: NW 315° 18kts

Type: Nacra/FS handicap

Boats and Crew

FS – Shau, Ultra, Phil, Claire, Rayz

FS/C – Kayo w/Moon, Dae w/Minna

Nacra – Gryfin, Justin, Soh, Rugger w/Red, Christine

36624795426_b1c0de213e_h

This first race was epic. While i was rushing to the starting line, 16 kts, i could see boats everywhere and my only goal was to avoid them. I eventually did, crossing the line in a good position and quickly sailing  ahead of the pack . The race was not so easy for other sailors, 4 crews could not finish the race, victims of our only fear: the lag.

Because of their speed, the two Flying Shadow crewed went quickly out of the fleet, fighting for the first and second position. Justin and his Nacra was the 3 one to cross the line, taking the 4 position after handicap and letting the 3 position to Ultra and his FS. A great race for these two new kitties !

If these big fleets don’t offer always the best sailing condition, there is something magic of being part of a large race, sailing with others people sharing the same interest for speed. It was fun !

Race 1 - August 19

Nacra – Gryfin w/Red, Soh, Christine, Phil

35861827563_ad26c9e618_h

For the second race, because of the number of boats, we had to cancel the Rodeo and took a race with less turns and more space. It was a good decision. We almost all finished the race successfully.

After a good start, Claire took the lead with her FS. She took the first place after handicap followed by Ultra. The 3 place was for Phil and his Nacra.

race 2 - August 18

Race 3

Race 3: CartFight-2 Gates

Wind: NW 315° 18kts

Type: FS class crewed

Boats and Crew

Shau w/woogalie, Gryfin w/Red, Ultra w/Noto, Dae w/Minna, Kayo w/Moon, Claire w/Phil

6 boats for the last race. The largest crew fleet we had in the Cat Fight. It was as well a very tactical race. After the first mark, Claire was ahead, but behind, Dae, Ultra and Kayo were fighting their way to the first gate, trying to take advantage of their position. Making the deadly mistake of putting myself downwind from the 2 others FS, i saw Claire accelerating …While she was probably reaching 16 or 18knots at the gate, we were stuck at 12 kts….that is the Cat Fight ! Congratulation to all crew and of course to our winner ! Claire !
