North Sea Open Regatta – Feb 28th 2018

The North Sea Open Regatta saw a great turn out for both races this week. The sim weather played well today as LL got a handle on the DDoS attacks from earlier this week, as we had no DNFs from crashes on the day. Both small boat and large boat fleets had great turnouts with 15 in the small boat race and 12 in the big boat race. Spectators once again packed the dock in the Eden Puffin region, as well as the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region.

The small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a split majority of five Bandit 25s and five Bandit IFs. Three TMS Flying Shadows, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Quest Melges-24 made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Outer Inner Loop (NS_OIL Rev1) course, was made up of majority of four TMS One Design 65s. Two Wildwind Open 60s, two Wildwind RC-44rs, two TMS Pacha 110s, one TMS Cafe Del Mar 75, and one TMS Ushuaia made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

This week also saw the handicap for the Bandit 25 revised from 0.75 to 0.78. All handicaps can be viewed here North Sea Handicap Table.

Carlota (Carlota Dufaux) and Ultra (ultramantra Resident) both finished tied with 27 points. As they both finished with the exact same points in each race, 14th and 13th respectively, neither A8.1 or A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will break their tie. Therefore, they remain tied in 18th place.

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta was met with extremely stormy sim weather. Both of the regatta races were abandoned due to a sustained DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service attack) on LL’s servers. The first race started off well enough, on North Sea Olympic Course (Long). As the fleet leaders, Blair and Rayz in their Bandit 25s, rounded the green buoy in the Ziziphus region on the last leg of the race, Linden labs login servers crashed resulting in the entire fleet, and most of the logged in users to the SL grid, to get disconnected. Users could not log back in to SL again for another 40 minutes. Once we were able to log back in, we made the decision to abandon both races as time had run out.

The outages would reoccur three more times through the rest of the day on the 26th and once again on the 27th. Linden Labs posted on their forums with more information about the attack Unscheduled DDoS.

A great spectator turnout and wonderful sailing weather featured in this week’s North Sea Bandit Regatta. The new dock, made by Petra, in Eden Puffin is getting great use as it was crowded for both races today. We also saw a wonderful turnout at Lighthouse Isle, in the Ziziphus region, as it was a great central viewing point for both courses, NS-SOL-13C and North Sea Butterfly. The regions themselves, freshly restarted 2 hours prior to the regatta, behaved well as no crashes were had until the very last race when Jackson’s connection gave up on him during a tight battle with Moon. This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs with two Bandit 25s and a lone Bandit 60 making up the remainder.

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta debuted our shiny new dock in Eden Puffin. Petra redesigned the race line area in Breadnut, moving the dock into the adjacent Eden Puffin region and clearing up more room around the committee boat. The dock, created by Petra, is larger than the old one and affords a 360° view of the surrounding sea and courses being raced. This will also help alleviate any lag created by crowds gathering on the dock during the pre-start and start phase of our races, by moving them farther away out of immediate draw distance view. The sims also behaved for us today, as we only had 2 DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day. Plus, we had a larger crowd gather on the new dock along with the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing 3 laps on the North Sea Short Loop Course, was comprised of a split majority of three bandit 25s and three Bandit IFs. The remainder of the small boat fleet was made up of two TMS Flying Shadows, one Dolphin Moth, one TMS Nacra 17, one Trudeau One, and one Trudeau Leetle Cat II. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a majority of three TMS One Design 65s.
