Saturday afternoon was a beautiful windy winter day. The last bandit IF Regatta of 2021. This week, we had a fleet of thirteen Bandit IFs at the start, two of the thirteen Bandit IFs had crews. The North Sea and Fruit regions behaved reasonably well.

From the start of the first race we had a leading group of seven boats. At the first island the entire fleet was together again, with four boats slightly ahead of the rest. At the second island, the four boats had slightly increased the distance to the rest of the fleet. Between the second and the third island, mutual fighting arose and when we emerged from Fruit towards the North Sea we still had four boats in the lead. Behind it was a loner with four pursuers behind it. The place for fourth and fifth place would be decided at the finish.

After the start of the second race we had a group of ten boats sailing towards the first mark. Two skippers decided to sail a different route to the first mark. This gave us a group of five, two loners and a group of three who followed the first five boats. The rear two of the front runners turned first towards the first mark. Then the other three followed. This shook up the order of the leading group. When we arrived at the third mark we still had a leading group of four boats, from these four boats the winner would come.

I want to thank all skippers for participating in the competitions or the North Sea and wish you a prosperous 2021. Hopefully we will see each other again in the new year.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Today’s winner was Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), with Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 16:51. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“

Therefore, both Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) receive 3.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 3 and 4, added together and divided equally.

Jack (Jacquimo Resident) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) both finished tied with 18 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Jacquimo Resident 6 12
Maximiliano Szondi 9 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jack’s favor with having a sixth place finish over Max’s ninth place finish as his best.

Cilian (Cilian McCullough ) and Juicy (juice651 Resident) both finished tied with 22 points.

Mild to choppy sim sailing weather, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of the North Sea started out relatively behaved as only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded during the first race. Of those two DNFs, one was due to a skippers connection failing and the remainder was from a skipper hitting a region corner. The seas grew rough late, as five more DNFs would occur during the second race. As with the first race, the skipper with the failing connection crashed. Another two skippers hit region corners, and the remaining two DNFs were from skippers crashing on region crossings. Even with the late rough weather, the crowd that assembled on the small race dock and Poseidon Center Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, enjoyed a wonderful display of fleet-foiled feline frenzy from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Olympic Mirror and North Sea Triple Pink courses, was made up of a majority of nine The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing with crew and five sailing single-handed respectively. One lone TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Race Notes:
Laured (laured Cabassoun) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for sailing an incorrect course, she missed the final waypoints on the course.

Isa (isab DeCuir) and Daenerys (blondij Resident) finished tied with 6 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

In the last race, Isa breaks the tie with Daenerys with her second place finish over Daenerys’s fourth place finish.

Juicy (juice651 Resident) and Cole (Colette Verino) both finished tied with 10 points.

Sea (filax Carter) and Laured (laured Cabassoun) both finished tied with 17 points. As both have the exact same finishes, an 8 point finish during race one and a 9 point finish during race two respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Sea and Laured both remain tied in ninth place overall.

Mild seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm for most as five DNFs (Disqualified) were recorded on the day. Two DNFs were attributed to skippers getting stripped from their boats on region crossings, with another two due to skippers crashing on region corners, and the final DNF due to a skipper sailing into Fruit Islands after getting lost on the course. The crowds that assembled on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on an exciting display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline course, was made up of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. One The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, one TMS Star Class, one Dolphin Moth, and one Quest 2m rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was comprised of a majority of six Wildwind Open 60s. Two TMS One Design 65s, two Trudeau 12 Metres, and one TMS Ocean Bach rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:13:08. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Emileigh 1050 0.75 787.50
Nicole 1051 0.75 788.25

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Emileigh’s favor with having a 787.50 seconds finish over Zimtzicke’s 788.25 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. In the last race, Sea breaks the tie with Palani with her sixth place finish over Palani’s eighth place finish.

Rolo (RoloTomari Resident), Kim (Kim Farleigh), Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), and Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) all finished tied with 22 points. As they all finished with the exact same finishes, a ten point finish during the small boat portion and a 12 point finish during the big boat portion respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Rolo, Kim, Rugger, and Meireles all remain tied in twelfth place overall.

Saturday graced us with a beautiful fall afternoon. This time we had a fleet of nine Bandit IFs at the start, one of the nine Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea and Fruit regions behaved very well.

In both races mutual fights arose. In the first race, three skippers quickly left the fleet. The winner of the first race would fall from this leading group. Behind the leading group, the chasing group stayed close to each other until the end. In the second race we already had a dropout in the first lap. In the second lap of the second race, we would have another fallout, which thinned out the battlefield.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Calm to mild seas, with another great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. As has been the case for the entire week, Linden Research (LL) dealt us an interesting hand on Friday, continuing with their battery of grid restarts as they work towards the finish of their project to migrate Secondlife™ to Amazon servers1. LL decided that a restart for the whole grid was in order (see: Rolling Restarts for Second Life Main Channel) during The Cat Fight. We took a chance and ran the races anyway, pulling off both races with only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day. Both of those DNFs occurred during the first race as one skipper lost their internet connection and another skipper crashed on a region crossing. Things got a bit hairy during the second race as portions of the North Sea restarted, as LL’s rolling restart wave hit the estate. However, every skipper finished the race without a hiccup. The crowd that assembled on the shores of the islands in the Genip and Ziziphus regions, cheered on the fleet-foiled feline frenzy as they put on another great display of exciting racing. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Copacabana and North Sea Snipe courses, was comprised of a majority of nine The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, six sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively. Mild sim sailing weather, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were behaved for most, with a slight bit of choppiness, as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. All three DNFs were attributed to region crossing crashes. The crowd that assembled on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, and small dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on this weeks skippers as they put on an exciting display tight-knit fleet racing.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, was comprised of majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Two Bandit IFs, one Bandit 25r, one The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, one TMS Laser One, one TMS Star Class, one Dolphin Moth, and one Trudeau Leetle Cat II rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Calm seas, with a wonderful fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. Lindern Research threw a curve to everyone on Monday, as they sprung rolling restarts across the entire grid (see: Rolling Restarts for Second Life Main Channel)1. This left 8 North Sea regions offline, as well being the cause of cancelled races from several other clubs. The originally planned courses of North Sea Short Loop and North Sea Trapezoid were incapable of being sailed, so a new course schedule was substituted an hour before race time. Instead, North Sea Olympic Course (Short) would be the course for the first race. We also created a new course for the second race, North Sea Olympic Short Reverse. In spite of the ongoing maintenance, The North Sea regions that were online held steady as only one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the entire day, out of 20 boats in the first race and 19 boats in the second race. The lone DNF was due to a skipper pulling his boat during the second race after frustration with his navigation HUD. The crowd that assembled on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on some great tight-nit fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet was comprised of a majority of twelve Bandit 22 LTEs. Seven Bandit IFs and one lone Bandit 25r rounded out this weeks fleet.

Rayz (Rayzza Rubble) and Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) both finished the first race tied with a final time of 0:06:35. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Rayzza 526 0.75 394.50
WWWAAAA 482 0.82 395.24

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Rayz’s favor with having a 394.50 seconds finish over Sandra’s 395.24 seconds finish.

Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Saturday afternoon was a stormy day in the fall. This time we had a fleet of nine Bandit IFs at the start. One of the nine Bandit IF’s had crew. The North Sea regions behaved reasonably well.

From the start of the first race we had a group of five boats. Two boats were caught in a storm between the first and second marks. One skipper had to give up, the other continued the race. Due to this storm, two skippers had lost their way to the top group. They would eventually fight for first place. Behind it, two skippers continued to compete for third place.

After the start of the second race we had a group of seven boats sailing towards the first mark.  Disaster struck the race director when I crashed and could not get online for several minutes. I was able to pick up the thread again when the fleet was in the region of Genip. Here two ships had taken the lead over the rest of the vast fleet.

We had five DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

DANGER FOR BARGING: ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED Five boats crossing each other path. The black and brown boats are overlapped, so the windward boat (Brown) shall keep clear of a leeward boat (Black).

In the last race, Moon breaks the tie with Julie with his first place finish over Julie’s second place finish.

Juicy (juice651 Resident) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) finished tied with 14 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, finishing with a seven point finish during the first race and a seven point finish during the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Juicy (juice651 Resident) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) remain tied in eighth place overall.
