Bandit Regatta – May 30th 2016

This weeks Bandit Regatta, in The North Sea, was a holiday edition for most and we had a wonderful turnout. Smooth sim weather was abundant, with no crashes in either race. This weeks fleet was made up of four Bandit IF’s, three Bandit 25’s, and a Bandit 60. Just to note, the just released Bandit IF v1.4 update is the IF you will want to use from now on in North Sea races.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13A, saw a great start for everyone, with no barging and cleaning sailing across the line. August and Laured took off, in their bandit 25’s, and screamed at the head of the fleet, with August creeping ever father out front and eventually claiming line honors.

In the second race, on NS-SOL-13B, we once again had a great clean start with several choosing to go to port, with no fouls, right after the start line. Once again, the Bandit 25 pack was out in front with August, Laured and Kayo all at the head of the fleet. The IF pack saw some spirited racing as well, with Alexandre and Red sailing close until the final leg of the course.

Race Note:
Lasfy was unfortunately disqualified from the first race for sailing the incorrect course.

Alexandre and August finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“

Edit: August caught a miscalculation in the first race results. A formula in the table was missing and has been fixed. The results have been corrected and updated. In the first race, August placed first with Alexandre placing second resulting in a points tie, however, as explained above in the race notes, Alexandre breaks the tie and subsequently retains first place overall. Thanks to August for catching the mistake in the results. My apologies for posting somewhat inaccurate results at first.

 

Trudeau Classic Regatta – May 26th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta saw great racing and some great sim weather. We only had one crash, do to a corner hit. We also raced three races for points instead of two, on NS-SOL-13A, NS-SOL-13B, and NS-SOL-13C.

This weeks fleet was comprised of three 12 Metre’s, a Trudeau 12, a Leetle Cat II, and a Francois Jacques.

The racing was quite tight between Peter and I in our 12 Metres, and also Thea and Sue in their Leetle Cat II and Trudeau 12. Peter and I finished within’ seconds of each other in the second and third races, while both Thea and Sue exchanged positions several times in their closely matched boats.

North Sea Open Regatta – May 25th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta saw some really nice sim weather, no crashes, and a great turn out for both small and big boat races.

The small boat fleet was made up of two Nacra 17’s, two Melges-24’s, a Dolphin Moth, a Bandit IF, a Bandit F, a Shields Class, and a Trudeau 12. Racing was tight between Christine and Beane in their Melges-24’s, with both close up to the finish line along with Cole, not far behind, in her Nacra 17. Katana made a spirited effort but capsized near the island in Ziziphus, lost her race wind, and was unfortunately a DNF, our only for the day. Sue held in with the most patience, racing her Trudeau 12, crossing the line last, but the handicap for the Trudeau 12 placed her further up in the pack in the end.

The big boat fleet was comprised of three Trudeau 12 Metre’s, two One Design 65’s, a Trudeau Francois Jacques, and a Ushuaia. Racing was really close between Cole, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, Christine, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, and myself, in my Ushuaia. All three boats are rated at the same handicap and it showed. We all exchanged positions several times through the course with Cole and I neck and neck for most of the legs. Cole ultimately won the position battle.

Bandit Regatta – May 23rd 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta was an entirely Bandit IF and F affair. The sim weather was decent, and the only crashed to note were from corners. The fleet itself was made up of three IF’s and two F’s.

The first race, on North Sea Short Loop run in 3 laps, saw a great effort from Red. Red thought the line didn’t record her start, and circled around to start again. Yet, the line did indeed record her start at 00:00:01, but she was now behind. She hung in there, and was rewarded for her effort, catching up to the fleet and taking first place.

The second race was just as exciting as the first, run on North Sea World Cup Reach (NS-WC Rch), with the fleet staying tight through the first upwind leg. The fleet did start to spread out with Red and Alexandre in the front, closely staying neck and neck with Rosie right on their stern. Red wound up extending a lead, however, and ultimately took first place again.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – May 19th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta, in The North Sea, saw a great turnout with a nicely mixed fleet. This weeks fleet consisted of four 12 Metre’s, two Patchogue II’s, a Hepcat, a Leetle Cat II, and a Francois Jacques, that was switched out for a T-12 by it’s owner, Elbag, for the second race.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13B, saw some spirited competition among the 12 Metre’s with everyone chasing Peter after he passed Cole on the first upwind beat. The rest of the 12 Metre’s remained tight all the up to the finish. The small Patchogue II pack also some some tight racing as Asami and Omar were close for the entire course.

The second race, on North Sea Butterfly, saw Elbag switch out his Francois Jacques for a T-12, however RL came knocking and he recorded a DNF as he had to leave. The rest of the fleet saw some exciting racing between Peter and I, right from the start. The sound of Peter’s sails were in my ears the entire course as he stuck tight with me, finishing a mere 20 seconds behind me.

North Sea Open Regatta – May 18th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta, saw some nice sim weather with a decent turn out for both races. This week also marks the change of the regatta to the points system we use for our Bandit and Trudeau Regatta’s. Points will be awarded according to the final handicap adjusted finish in each race. Skippers who do not finish a race, or are disqualified score the number of boats in the race plus one. Points earned in both races will be combined and then the final placement will be sorted by lowest score. Point ties will be decided using Appendix A8 Series Ties from Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing. Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.

This weeks small boat fleet was made up of three Bandit IF’s, a Nacra 17, a Dolphin Moth, and a Shields Class. The small boat course, North Sea Circle, was lively and saw the fleet spread out across the North Sea. Unfortunately, Gryfin wound up hitting a corner in his IF and crashed to record a DNF for the race.

The big boat fleet featured three TMS Ushuaia’s, two Trudeau 12 Metre’s, a One Design 65, and a Loonetta 31. The course, North Sea Outer Inner Loop Rev1, was also lively for the big boats. The Ushuaia pack stayed tight through out the course with Rulette and Carlota exchanging positions just behind me. Palani, in his One Design 65, started last but rocketed through the fleet, eventually passing everyone to finish with line honors just ahead of Cole in her 12 Metre, who was racing very well up front.

Bandit Regatta – May 16th 2016

This weeks Bandit Regatta, in The North Sea, saw some choppy sim weather but still produced an exciting race. We even got to see Elbag join in the second race before other responsibilities called his attention away. This weeks fleet was made up of 3 bandit IF’s, 2 Bandit F’s, a Bandit 25, and a Bandit 60. This was also our monthly “There and Back Again” series, using both start lines in Breadnut and Eden Auk.

The first race, North Sea Breadnut to Eden Auk, saw stiff competition between the Bandit F’s of Red and Alexandre with Rulette’s Bandit IF following close behind. Rosie took line honors in her Bandit 25 with Cranston in his Bandit 60 following in the rear of the fleet.

The second race, North Sea Eden Auk to Breadnut, showcased a tight battle between Rulette and Carlota. Rulette got off to a great start with Carlota nipping at her stern the whole course. Rulette ultimately finished ahead. Carlota actually had the faster lap time but Rulette nailed her start giving her clear air and just enough of a lead to finish ahead.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – May 12th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta, in The North Sea, saw a great turn out for both races with some really nice sim weather. The fleet was composed of five 12 Metre’s, with the remainder made up of a New York 30, a Leetle Cat II, and a Patchogue II.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13A, saw some great racing among the 12 Metre pack as Peter and Cole were sailing close throughout the course. Initially, Cole had barged Peter at the start line, however as the foul didn’t actually impede or cause any loss of time to Peter, it was the race directors decision to overrule the protest lodged by Peter.

The second race, on the recently created North Sea Extreme course, saw some spirited competition once again among the !2 Metre fleet, as I would up catching up to Cole on the course and finally passing her right at the finish line. Asami in her Patchogue II and Rosie in her Leetle Cat II also were exchanging position back and forth through the course making for some fun racing.

North Sea Open Regatta – May 11th 2016

New week, same regatta but new name. This week, the Blue Lagoon Marina Regatta changes to the North Sea Open Regatta. Same format this week, but next week, we will run the points format used in our Bandit Regatta, Trudeau Regatta, and Dolphin Moth Regatta. We will still run small boats in race one and big boats in race two.

The sim weather was excellent this week, with the only crashes due to pesky corners. You still can’t be in four sims at once.

The small boat fleet was made up of a majority of Nacra 17’s for a change. We hadn’t seen that boat capture the majority, in The North Sea, for quite some time. The previous heavy majority favorite, the Bandit IF, only had one representative in the fleet this week. The remainder of the fleet was comprised of a Bandit 25, a Flying Shadow, a Dolphin Moth and a Flying Tako. Racing was fun, on North Sea Outer Inner Loop, with the Nacra pack showing heavy competition between Arya, Viv and Cole. Beane, on her Flying Shadow, hung right in there with the Nacra’s for added fun. Cole got snagged by a corner and crashed, recording a DNF, while Arya and Viv finished in exciting fashion, neck and neck, crossing the finish line three seconds apart.

The big boat fleet was comprised of two One Design 65’s, an ACA33, an Open 60, a Trudeau 12 Metre, an Ushuaia, and a Bandit 55. Racing was once again exciting on the newly created course by Julia, North Sea Extreme, with both Arya and Beane staying close in their One Design 65’s. Arya pulled ahead and ultimately grabbed line honors.

Bandit Regatta – May 9th 2016

This weeks Bandit Regatta was an all IF affair with an appearance of two F’s. We also had some great sailing weather to start that turned a little choppy towards the end causing 2 DNF’s in the last race.

The first race, on North Sea Olympic Course Long, saw the entire fleet impressively take off like rockets in the pre-start and perform a clean start across the line. Rulette took off from there with Red and the rest of the pack following after. Rulette increased her lead to almost 2 and half sims at the end, with Red putting up a gallant effort to stay within’ reach. The rest of the fleet saw some spirited position changes, with Alexandre, sailing his F, staying neck and neck with Arya for most of the course.

The second race saw the same wildfire start, with 6 IF’s and 2 F’s darting around in the pre-start for another clean start across the line. This time, Carlota was the first across and led most of the way. Arya, Alex and Rulete weren’t far behind, with the rest of the fleet stretching out behind them. Unfortunately, the sims got pesky and claimed 2 of the fleet to crashes, with them unfortunately recording DNF’s.

Today’s winner was Carlota, with Rulette second, and Red in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Note:
Alexandre was unfortunately disqaulified form the second race due to sailing the incorrect course.
Rulette and Red both finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Rulette’s favor with having a first place finish over Red’s second place finish as her best.
