Bandit Regatta – October 31st 2016

Excellent sailing weather and some great racing featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The sim weather was excellent as there were no DNFs due to crashes. The only DNF occurred when Cor’s Bandit 50 got stuck on a buoy and stopped responding forcing Cor to delete the boat and re-log. This weeks races were held an hour later to help compensate for the United States lagging one week behind Europe in falling back an hour from daylight savings time. This weeks races also fell on Halloween. Next weeks Bandit Regatta will return to it’s regular time of 1PM SL.

This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs. Two Bandit 60s and a lone Bandit 50 made up the remainder of the fleet.

The first race, on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), got off to a great start as the majority of the fleet got underway in under 30 seconds. Stu, in his bandit IF with Kate, was first to cross the start line at 00:00:05. Neil, in his Bandit IF, was next across at 00:00:11. Crantson, in his Bandit 60, followed next at 00:00:13. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:21 with Carlota, in her Bandit IF, right in tow at 00:00:22. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, followed next at 00:00:26 with Cor, in his Bandit 50, right on his stern at 00:00:27. Trey, in his Bandit 60, followed next at 00:00:47, with Rayz, in his Bandit IF, crossing at 00:00:52 and Susi, in her Bandit IF, crossing at 00:01:29. Cor, in his speedy Bandit 50, didn’t waste much time and made several moves through the fleet to take the lead. Stu, in his Bandit IF with Kate, held up strong right behind Cor. Ultra, Carlota, and Jackson, all in their Bandit IFs, wouldn’t stay back idly as they made moves to pass Cranston, in his Bandit 60, placing him in the middle of the fleet. Neil, in his Bandit if, fell off the great pace of his start to settle in behind Cranston. Trey, in his Bandit 60, settled into the rear of the fleet with Rayz, in his Bandit IF, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, just behind him. Cor’s lead held as he crossed the line first, gaining line honors. Stu, with Kate, finished second, not far off of Cor’s pace. Carlota finished next, followed by Ultra, Jackson, Cranston, Neil, Trey, Rayz, and Susi.

The second race, on the North Sea Trapezoid course, got off to just as quick a start as the first, with a majority of the fleet once again crossing about 30 seconds. Stu, in his Bandit IF with Kate, started things off, crossing the start line at 00:00:07. Cor, in his Bandit 50, was next to start at 00:00:20. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was across next at 00:00:22. Neil, in his Bandit IF, followed next at 00:00:23. Crantson, in his Bandit 60, was across next at 00:00:27 followed by Trey, in his Bandit 60, at 00:00:34. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, followed next at 00:00:41, followed by Rayz, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:85, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, at 00:03:16. Once again, Cor’s speedy bandit 50 got him out front quick, however he struck and got stuck on a buoy. Cor’s Bandit 50 stopped responding and he ultimately deleted it and re-logged, recording a DNF. This left Jackson at the head of the fleet, in his Bandit IF, until Ultra, in his Bandit IF, made several moves, and took the lead coming from the rear of the fleet. Neil, in his Bandit IF, settled in behind Jackson with Stu, in his Bandit IF with Kate, falling from his great start to stay in tow behind Neil. Cranston, in his Bandit 60, found himself comfortably in the middle of the fleet with Rayz, in his Bandit IF, settling in right behind. Susi, in her Bandit IF, was right behind Rayz, as Trey, in his Bandit 60, fell from the middle of the fleet to the rear. Ultra held on to his lead and crossed the finish first, taking line honors. Jackson was right behind, crossing second. Neil crossed third followed by Stu, with Kate, Cranston, Rayz, Susi, and Trey.

Thursday Regatta – October 27th 2016

This weeks North Sea Thursday Regatta saw smoother seas and some exciting racing. We raced Trudeau Patchogue IIs again this week and the sims behaved for us. We had a nice turnout with 7 strong in the fleet.

Racing got under way in the first race with a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course. I hit the start line first, crossing at 00:00:01, with Joshua right on my stern, crossing at 00:00:03. Cor was next to cross at 00:00:06 with Asami crossing behind him at 00:00:25. Ulla crossed next at 00:00:57, followed by Susi, at 00:01:32, and Trey, at 00:03:02. Racing remained close up front as Joshua stayed right behind me with Cor close behind him. Asami was right on Cor’s stern the entire course with Ulla, Trey, and Susi settling into the rear of the fleet. Joshua was within overtaking distance of me, the entire second lap, and pulled ahead on the leg before the last mark until I was able to get inside and overtake him on the last line to the finish line, crossing first by mere milliseconds for a photo finish. Cor was next across with Asami crossing 5 seconds after him. Ulla was next to cross, followed by Trey and Susi.

The second race, on the North Sea Manta course, got off to a slightly slower start as I crossed the line first again at 00:00:18 with Asami crossing right behind me at 00:00:19. Ulla was next to start at 00:00:29 followed by Cor at 00:00:30. Susi was next across at 00:01:34 followed by Trey at 00:01:44. As I led through the first leg around the first mark in the Sapote region, Asami crashed on the crossing into the Mammea region with her boat hitting mine and causing my boats scripts to error. I lost keyboard steering and had to control the boat from mouselook for the rest of the race. Asami wound up unfortunately recording a DNF. I kept at the lead pace with Cor sneaking up right behind me staying on my stern for the rest of the course. Ulla also met the crashing fate and recorded a DNF. Trey wound up passing Susi as they took up position at the rear of the fleet. As I neared the finish line, Cor got a nice gust of wind and overtook me as we both recorded another photo finish with Cor crossing first, mere milliseconds before me. Trey was next to finish followed by Susi.

North Sea Open Regatta – October 26th 2016

Another record tying turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. This weeks turnout tied last weeks record turnout, with 18 boats showing up to race in the small boat fleet. We also had another great spectator turnout as the popular viewing spots of the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, the shore in Eden Albatros, the committee boat dock in Breadnut, and the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus all had crowds watching the races. The sims themselves were relatively behaved as only a few DNFs were attributed to crossing crashes. The other DNFs were what Petra calls ‘corner tickling’, sailing right into the corner intersection of four sims.

The small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs. Three Shields Class, two Dolphin Moths, two Melges-24s, a Ktaba 20 MX Teleri, a Laser One, a Nacra 17, and a Flying Shadow made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Racing got off to a quick start as half the small boat fleet was across the start line in 30 seconds. Peter, in his Laser One, recorded a nearly perfect start at 00:00:01. Kristaly, in her Shields Class, followed next at 00:00:03. Lucy, in her Melges-24, was next to cross at 00:00:05 with Beane, in her Melges-24, in tow at 00:00:06. I was next to cross, in my Dolphin Moth, right along with Stu, in his Bandit IF with Kate, both of us at 00:00:07. Cole, in her Nacra 17, was next to cross at 00:00:20 with ViV, in her Flying Shadow, right behind at 00:00:24. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was next across at 00:00:29 with Joshua, in his Dolphin Moth, right behind at 00:00:31. Kurt, in his Bandit IF, was across next at 00:00:40 with Asami, in her Ktaba MX 20 Teleri, in tow at 00:00:45. Traeumer, in his Shields Class, was next to cross at 00:00:49 with Carlota, in her Bandit IF, crossing at 00:00:52. Cranston, in his Bandit IF with Shaylin, was across next at 00:00:54 while Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossed at 00:01:13. Susi, in her Bandit IF, crossed next at 00:01:45, with Dess, in her Shields Class, crossing at 00:02:28. I jumped out to the lead, in my speedy Dolphin Moth, pacing the pack as Joshua, in his Dolphin Moth, settled in right behind me. Beane, in her Melges-24, settled into third in the fleet as Cole, in her Nacra 17, and ViV, in her Flying Shadow, fell in right behind her. Peter, in his Laser One, after that jump on the start, fell behind to the quicker boats, to settle in behind the catamarans. Asami, in her Ktaba 20 MX Teleri, passed several of the slower Bandit IFs that started ahead of her to stay on Peter’s stern. Dess, in her Shields Class, coming from behind in her start fell in right behind Asami. Next up was the Bandit IF pack, with Carlota leading the small pack as Jackson fell in behind her. Neil was right behind as Cranston, with Shaylin, Kurt, and Susi all falling in behind him. Kristaly, in her Shields Class, Lucy, in her Melges-24, Stu, in his Bandit IF with Kate, and Traeumer, in his Shields Class, all met the crashing fate and unfortunately recorded DNFs. I held the pack lead, in my Dolphin Moth, and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors with Joshua, in his Dolphin Moth, crossing the finish line second. Beane, in her Melges-24, was next to cross third, as Cole, in her Nacra 17, and Viv, in her Flying Shadow, crossed right after her, 12 and 16 seconds apart, respectively. Peter, in his Laser One, was next to cross the finish line, with Asami, in her Ktaba 20 MX Teleri, and Dess, in her Shields Class, crossing right behind. The bandit IF pack was next to finish, as Carlota, Jackson, Neil, Cranston with Shaylin, Kurt and Susi all crossed the line.

The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was made up of a majority four TMS Ushuaias. Three Wildwind RC-44s, a Trudeau 12 Metre, an ACA33, a Wildwind AC45, a TMS One Design 65, and a Bandit 60 all made up the remainder of the big boat fleet. This race got off to a quick start just like the first, as Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, not satisfied with his 1 second laser One start recorded a perfect 00:00:00 start. Beane, in her TMS One Design 65, was next across the start line at 00:00:03. Viv, in her Wildwind AC45, was next to cross at 00:00:06. Lucy, in her Wildwind RC-44, crossed next at 00:00:14 as Stu, in his TMS Ushuaia with Kate, was right on Lucy’s stern, crossing at 00:00:15. I was next to cross, in my TMS Ushuaia, at 00:00:21 with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, crossing right behind me at 00:00:22. Traeumer, in his Wildwind RC-44, was across next at 00:00:31 as Cole, in her ACA33, followed right behind at 00:00:37. Susi, in her TMS Ushuaia, was next to cross at 00:01:06, with both Joshua, in his TMS Ushuaia, and Dess, in her Wildwind RC-44, both crossing on Susi’s stern at 00:01:07. ViV, in her speedy Wildwind AC45, did not hesitate on her acceleration, getting up on her foils to take off and pace the fleet out front. Beane, in her TMS One Design 65, settled in her spot behind ViV, as Peter, in his slightly slower Trudeau 12 Metre, fell back behind Beane and Cole, in her ACA33, to the middle of the fleet. I was right behind Peter, in my TMS Ushuaia, with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, and Susi, in her TMS Ushuaia, settling in right behind me. Lucy, in her Wildwind RC-44, Stu, in his TMS Ushuaia with Kate, Traeumer, in his Wildwind RC-44, Joshua, in his TMS Ushuaia, and Dess, in her Wildwind RC-44 all crashed. Lucy, Traeumer, and Joshua all recorded DNFs while Stu and Dess received DSQs due to missing the first course mark in the Sapote region. ViV held her lead, in her Wildwind AC45, and crossed the finish line first to take line honors. Beane, in her TMS One Design 65, crossed the finish line second with Cole, in her ACA33, crossing the line third. Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, was next to cross the line. I crossed the line next, in my TMS Ushuaia, with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, and Susi, in her TMS Ushuaia, crossing next.

However, since they all finished with duplicate points in both races, 15 and 8 respectively, neither A8.1 or A8.2 will break their tie, therefore they remain tied in thirteenth place.

Bandit Regatta – October 24th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta featured a stormy first race but relatively smooth second race along with a great turn out. We had a sim take out 3/4’s of the fleet during the first race, due to a faltering phsyics state in the sim. We restarted that sim and the sims were well behaved for the second race. We also had another larger spectator turnout at the the committee boat dock in Breadnut, The Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, along the shore in Eden Alabtros, and the beaches along Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus. The fleet itself was impressive as we had 11 boats turn up to compete. Eight Bandit IFs made up the majority of the fleet with a Bandit 15, a Bandit 50, and a Bandit 60 filling out the remainder. We would also like to welcome Rayz, who raced in his first races today.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, got off to a wonderful start as the majority of the fleet was across the line within 30 seconds. Stu started things off, in his Bandit IF, crossing the line first at 00:00:07. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was next across at 00:00:13. Carlota was next to cross, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:17, followed by Gail, in her Bandit 25, at 00:00:20. Both Ultra and Alexandre, in their Bandit IFs, following along next at 00:00:28. Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, was next to cross at 00:00:32 followed by Cor, in his Bandit 50, at 00:00:38. Rayz, in his Bandit IF, was along next at 00:01:08 followed by Susi, in her Bandit IF, at 00:01:47 and Neil, in his Bandit IF, at 00:02:05. Things went well for the fleet on the first leg, all the way up to the turn around Petra’s isle in the Genip region. As the fleet rounder Petra’s island and proceeded on the return leg back through the Nance region, physics in the region came to a halt. 8 of 11 in the fleet wound up crashing and being disconnected there, subsequently recording DNFs. Three in the fleet made it through unscathed. Cor, in his Bandit 50 wound up taking line honors, crossing first. Stu, in his Bandit IF, crossed second with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, crossed a mere 4 seconds later in third.

We recovered the fleet and restarted the Nance region to start the second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course. The fleet once again got off to a great clean and quick start. Alexandre and Jackson, both in their Bandit IFs, crossed first together at 00:00:04. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, was next across at 00:00:06 with Stu, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:09. Cranston, in his Bandit IF with Shaylin, was next to cross at 00:00:13. Neil, in his Bandit IF, and Cor, in his Bandit 50, crossed together next at 00:00:21. Gail, in her Bandit 25, followed next at 00:00:25 with new comer Rayz, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:44. Gail, in her speedy Bandit 25, did not waste time and moved ahead of 7 in the fleet to take the lead and pace the fleet for the entire course. Alexandre and Jackson, both in their Bandit IF’s, held onto their spots just to Gail’s stern. Ultra was just behind, in his Bandit IF, with Neil, in his Bandit IF, moving ahead of both Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shayling, and Stu, in his Bandit IF. Rayz, in his Bandit IF, fell in at the rear of the fleet. Cor, in his Bandit 50, wound up crashing and recording a DNF. Gail took line honos, as her leading pace never faltered and she crossed first. Alexandre crossed the finish line next, followed by Jackson, Ultra, Neil, Cranston with Shaylin, Stu, and Rayz.

Thursday Regatta – October 20th 2016

Really rough sim weather featured during this weeks North Sea Thursday Regatta. We raced Trudeau Patchogue II’s this week, and those that held online, had a great time. Joshua had a tough time recording DNFs for both races, as he was experiencing the same problems I was, losing connection to SL on every other sim crossing. Kurt actually had it slightly better, only crashing out on the last race. With that said, Asami, Gail, and Burton had no troubles and showcased some pretty close racing in both races. Today was Asami’s first time taking first place and line honors in a race, well done!

The issues Joshua and I experienced where due to a failing router on the route both of our ISPs use to get to SL, here in the US. This foreshadowed the much more severe DDoS of the DNS providers in the US, the following day, the 21st.

North Sea Open Regatta – October 19th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta featured a huge turnout and also some choppy sim weather. The sims played up slightly during the small boats race, causing several DNFs, but settled down for the big boats race. We also saw the single largest turnout for a race fleet since Petra split the races into small boats and big boats from the original combined fleets in early 2015. 18 boats turned up for the small boat race, all racing from one start line. We additionally had another great turnout of spectators positioned all around the North Sea. Plus the starts for both races got off great, with more than half of both fleets starting in 30 seconds, showing that pre-start practices are really paying off. By the way, that is ten boats of an eighteen boat fleet, for the small boats, starting in 30 seconds with no fouling, which is no small feet.

The small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs. Three Melges-24s, two Dolphin Moths, two Shields Class, a Trudeau One, a Flying Shadow, a Nacra 17, and a Laser One made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. I got things started, crossing the start line at 00:00:01 in my Dolphin Moth with Peter, in his Laser One, right behind me at 00:00:02. Lucy, in her Melges-24, was next across at 00:00:04 with Beane, in her Melges-24, right behind at 00:00:06. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:07 followed by Kristaly, in her Shields Class, at 00:00:10. Viv, in her Flying Shadow, and Gail, in her Dolphin Moth, were both across next at 00:00:14. Stu, in his bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:28 followed by Jackson, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:30. Cranston, in his Bandit IF with Shaylin as crew, was next to cross at 00:00:36 followed by Cor, in his Trudeau One, at 00:00:39. Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossed next at 00:00:43 with Susi, in her Bandit IF, following at 00:00:46. Cole was next, in her Nacra 17, crossing at 00:01:01 with Traeumer, in his Shields Class, crossing at 00:01:07. Palani, in his Melges-24, was across next at 00:01:11 with Asami, in her Bandit IF, crossing at 00:01:41. Tragedy soon struck however, as the Mammea region didn’t rez ahead of me while heading right to where it should have been at 33kts on my Dolphin Moth, ultimately causing my crash and recording a DNF. Peter, in his slower Laser One, held on, but not for long as Beane, in her Melges-24, Gail, in her Dolphin Moth, and Lucy, in her Melges-24 all made moves to pass him. Unfortunately, Beane and Gail both would crash and record DNF’s as well. Lucy held on, however until Viv, in her faster Flying Shadow, moved up through the fleet to take the lead. Kristaly, in her Shields Class, also met the crashing fate and recorded a DNF. Cole, in her Nacra 17, not to be outdone on making move, move up through almost the whole fleet to pass Lucy and fall in right behind Viv. Traeumer was next up to make some moves up through the fleet, in his Shields Class, falling in right behind Peter as Palani, in his Melges-24, moved up as well, just ahead of Peter. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, Cor, in his Trudeau One, Stu, in his Bandit IF, and Cranston with Shaylin, in his Bandit 60, took up the center of the fleet and jockeyed for position there. The remained of the Bandit IF pack made up the rear of the fleet, with Neil, Carlota, Susi, and Asami. Viv held her lead to cross first and take line honors with Cole crossing just behind her. Lucy was next to cross, followed by Palani, Peter, Traeumer, Jackson, Cor, Stu, Cranston with Shaylin, Neil, Carlota, Susi, and Asami.

The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Manta course, was made up of a majority of three Ushuaias. Two Wildwind RC-44s, a One Design 65, an ACA33, a Trudeau 12 Metre, an AC45, and a Bandit 60 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet. Peter got things started, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, crossing first at 00:00:006. Beane, in her One Design 65, was next to start at 00:00:08 followed by Stu, in his Ushuaia, at 00:00:10. Cole, in her ACA33, was next to cross at 00:00:12 with Lucy, in her RC-44, crossing at 00:00:15. Viv, in her AC45, crossed next at 00:00:23 followed by Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin as crew, crossing at 00:00:24. Traeumer was across next, in his RC-44, at 00:00:31 followed by Cor, in his Ushuaia, crossing at 00:00:54. Gail was next across, in her Bandit 25 and not officially recorded for the race but allowed to race along as practice, at 00:01:24 with Susi, in her Ushuaia, crossing at 00:02:32. Once again, Peter’s slowed Trudeau 12 Metre would not hold the lead as Beane’s faster One Design 65 would take it and hold it for the duration of the course. Peter continued to slide back as Lucy, in her RC-44, Cole, in her ACA33, and Traeumer, in his RC-44, proved to be faster and took up position ahead of him. Viv, in her AC45, had to record a DNF as she had RL call and logged. Stu, in his Ushuaia, also had tragedy strike as he crashed and recorded a DNF. Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, held his ground towards the rear of the fleet with Cor, in his Ushuaia, and Susi, in her Ushuaia, all just behind. Beane crossed first, taking line honors, with Lucy crossing just on her stern. Traeumer was next to finish, followed by Cole, Peter, Gail (as a practice racer), Cranston with Shaylin, Cor, and Susi.

Bandit Regatta – October 17th 2016

Slightly choppy sim weather and a great turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The sims acted up slightly for both races, during the first and at the beginning of the second, before settling down and allowing for some really nice racing from a large fleet of Bandit boats. We also had another large turnout of spectators gathered to view our monthly ‘There and Back Again’ series of races across The North Sea at the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, the committee boat dock in Breadnut, Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus, along the shore of Eden Albatros, and Robbins Reef Lighthouse in Eden Auk. This weeks fleet was comprised of a majority of nine Bandit IFs, with one lone Bandit 25 and one lone Bandit 60 making up the remainder.

The first race, on the Breadnut to Eden Auk course, the ‘There’ portion of ‘There and Back Again’, saw a nice clean start from the entire fleet. Gail, in her Bandit 25, got things rolling as she crossed the start first at 00:00:08. John, in his Bandit 60, was next to cross at 00:00:22, with Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:25 and both Ultra and Jackson, both in Bandit IF’s, next at 00:00:27. Viv, in her Bandit IF, followed next at 00:00:35, with Carlota, in her Bandit IF, right after at 00:00:45. Cor, in his Bandit IF, was next across, at 00:00:47, followed by Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossing at 00:00:52. Susi, in her Bandit IF, was next to cross, at 00:01:03, with Stu, in his Bandit IF, crossing at 00:01:10. Gail paced the fleet, in her speedy Bandit 25, with Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, making a move to pass John, and his Bandit 60, and taking up position behind Gail. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, also made a move to pass John and fell in behind Alexandre. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, made a move of her own to pass ViV, in her Bandit IF, sneaking right up on John’s stern. Cor, in his Bandit IF, fell back slightly with Neil, in his Bandit IF, and Stu, in his Bandit IF, both passing him. Susi, in her Bandit IF, fell in right behind Cor. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, unfortunately crashed on a rough crossing, and wound up recording a DNF. Gail finished first, claiming line honors, with Alexandre crossing right after her. Ultra was next to finish, followed by John, Carlota, ViV, Neil, Stu, Cor, and Susi.

The second race, on the Eden Auk to Breadnut course, the ‘Back Again’ portion of ‘There and Back Again’, had a bit of stormy sim weather hit during the start as well as a wind change from 225° (SW) from the first race to 135° (SE) for the second race. Three racers, Stu, ViV, and Susi all got swept up in some lag soup, preventing them from starting. You will see by the start times that the combination of lag and the changed wind and start direction threw the fleet for a small loop as the start times are much higher than for the first race. Gail continued her start luck, crossing the line first at 00:00:09. Alexandre was next to cross at 00:00:18, with Carlota following at 00:00:23. John was next across at 00:00:51, followed by Cor, at 00:01:03, Jackson, at 00:01:39, Ultra, at 00:01:46, and Neil at 00:02:38. This starting order actually held pretty much through out the fleet with Cor slipping two spots as both Jackson and Ultra made moves to pass him on the course. Gail once again crossed the finish first to claim line honors, with Alexandre crossing next. Carlota followed with John, Jackson, Ultra, Cor, and Neil crossing after.

Thursday Regatta – October 13th 2016

This weeks North Sea Thursday Regatta was a change of pace as the Trudeau Patchogue II was dusted off and raced again. The sim weather was great as no DNF’s or crashes were recorded, showing the Patch II’s stability still holds. We also had a nice turnout as we saw 8 racers over the two races.

The wind was slightly slower than usual and a little gusty for the first race, on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), with a 15 knot south westerly wind with 15 degrees of variation and 2 knot gusts. The fleet got off to a slow start as Christine crossed first at 00:00:16. Dess was next to cross at 00:00:31 with myself crossing right after her at 00:00:35. Joshua was next at 00:00:58, followed by Gabi, at 00:01:13, Gail, at 00:01:27, and Burton, 00:01:14. Christine held her lead up front, with Joshua following her line down past the island in the Sloe region and taking up second in the fleet. I took advantage of the clean air closest to the the starboard lay line and tacked west early right after the start and took up third in the fleet. Dess wound up finding herself in the middle of the pack with Gabi, Burton, and Gail behind her. Christine held her lead and crossed first, taking line honors. Josh was next across, with myself crossing after. Dess was next, with Gabi, Burton, and Gail following.

The wind picked up to it’s normal speed of 18 knots with no gusts for the second race, on the North Sea Manta course. The fleet also got off to a faster start with Christine crossing near perfect at 00:00:02. Dess was next to cross at 00:00:07 followed by Gabi at 00:00:08. Wolfhard was next, crossing at 00:00:23, followed by Gail at 00:00:30. Burton was next across at 00:00:52. Christine once again lead the fleet up front with Wolfhard making moves to pass both Dess and Gabi to take up position right behind Christine. Gabi made her own move to pass Dess to take up third leaving Dess in the middle of the pack. Gail was next holding her own towards the rear with Burton not far behind her. Christine would hold her lead until the finish, crossing first and taking line honors. Wolfhard had been nipping at her stern and crossed second, a mere 4 seconds behind Christine. Gabi followed, crossing third, with Dess crossing fourth. Gail was next to cross, with Burton crossing last.

North Sea Open Regatta – October 12th 2016

Some stormy seas and another great spectator turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Sim weather was a bit choppy at first in the small boats race, claiming three racers to crashes but it smoothed out in time for the big boats race. We also saw a great turnout of spectators once again, not only at the committee boat dock in Breadnut, but also the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, and along the shore in Eden Albatros. The SLCG was also out today steering traffic clear of the fleet as it raced, which we thank them for. We would also like to welcome Dess back to the North Sea and racing, as she has returned from her physical world travels.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of four Bandit IFs. Two Melges-24s, a Shields Class, a Laser One, and a Nacra 17 made up the remainder of the fleet. Racing started off with Peter, in his Laser One, crossing the start line first, at 00:00:03. Cole, in her Nacra 17, was next to cross at 00:00:10 with Jackson, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:14. Beane, in her Melges-24, was next across at 00:00:17. Traeumer, in his Shields class, was next at 00:00:22, with Stu, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:24. Neil, in his bandit IF, followed at 00:00:39, with Lucy, in her Melges-24, across next at 00:01:00, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, across at 00:03:04. Beane, in her Melges-24, and Cole, in her Nacra 18, quickly made moves to pass Peter’s slower Laser One, and paced the fleet. Peter held in third as the Bandit IF pack of Neil, Jackson, and Susi, settled in at the rear of the fleet. Tragedy struck during the end of the first leg of the course, as crashes claimed Traeumer, Stu, and Lucy, all recording DNF’s. Beane held her lead, as she crossed the finish first, taking line honors. Cole was not far behind, as she crossed the finish second, with Peter, crossing third. Neil followed along, crossing forth, with Jackson, and Susi, crossing next.

This weeks big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Sail 4 Life 2015 B (NS S4L 2015 B) course, was comprised of a split majority of two Wildwind RC-44s and two Ushuaias. A Trudeau 12 Metre, a Trudeau Francois Jacques, a One Design 65, a Bandit 60, and an ACA33 made up the remainder of the fleet. We once again had a really great clean start from the big boat fleet this week as seven of the nine boats were across the line in less than 30 seconds. Peter added to his great start from the small boat race, as he got off to a almost perfect one at 00:00:01, in his Trudeau 12 Metre. Next across was Dess, in her RC-44, at 00:00:03, followed by Cole, in her ACA33, at 00:00:05. Beane was next to cross, in her RC-44, at 00:00:09, with Stu, in his Ushuaia, following at 00:00:11. Kristaly, in her Francois Jacques, was next across, at 00:00:25, with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin as crew, following at 00:00:28. John, in his One Design 65, followed next, at 00:00:50, with Susi, in her Ushuaia, crossing at 00:01:08. Peters quick lead wouldn’t hold however, as his Trudeau 12 Metre was not as speedy as Dess’s RC-44, as Dess made an immediate move to lead the pack. Beane, in her RC-44, Cole, in her ACA33, and John, in his One Design 65, also made moves passing Peter, putting him square in the middle of the fleet. Stu, in his Ushuaia, Kristaly, in her Francois Jacques, Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, and Susi, in her Ushuaia, all settled in behind Peter. Beane wound up making another move to pass Dess, taking the lead, with Dess not giving up and staying right on her stern. Beane wound up crossing the line first, taking line honors with Dess crossing the line 10 seconds later. Cole was next to cross, with John crossing not far behind. Peter crossed next, with Stu, Kristaly, Cranston with Shaylin, and Susi all following.

Traeumer (traeumer66 Resident) and Lucy (LucyInTheSky Afarensis) both finished tied with 17 points. However, as they both finished with the exact same positions in each race, both having a DNF in the small boats and a DNS in the big boats, neither A8.1 or A8.2 will break their tie. Therefore, Traeumer and Lucy remain tied in 12th place.

 

Bandit Regatta – October 10th 2016

Fun racing and a great spectator turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. We had another large turnout of spectators on the committee boat dock in Breadnut, on the spectator pier at the Poseidon Center in Eden Puffin, and along the shore of Eden Albatros. Fun racing was had in this weeks fleet as it was comprised of a majority of five Bandit IF’s with one lone Bandit 25.

The first race, a 3 lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, saw Gail, racing in her Bandit 25 with Cat as crew, getting off to a great start at 00:00:03. Jackson and Ultra, both racing in their Bandit IFs, followed at 00:00:06. Alexandre, racing in his bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:20, followed by Neil, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:23, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, at 00:01:14. Gail lead the pack, in her speedy Bandit 25 with Cat as crew. Jackson and Ultra had some spirited racing as they kept on each others sterns, changing positions several times. Alexandre unfortunately crashed on the first region crossing after the start line and when his boat didn’t respond to input commands when he tried to recover, he took a DNF. Neil was right behind both of them, with Susi not far off. Gail took line honors, crossing first. Ultra followed, crossing second, with Jackson crossing third, six seconds after him. Neil was next to finish with Susi crossing next.

The second race, on the North Sea Manta course, saw some more fun racing. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, mistimed his start and crossed early, leaving Jackson, in his Bandit IF, to cross first at 00:00:05. Gail, in her Bandit 25, followed at 00:00:07, with Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossing at 00:00:18. Ultra had circled back around and crossed cleanly at 00:01:01. Ultra wasted no time and started to make moves through the fleet, passing Neil and then Jackson. Gail was too quick, in her Bandit 25, and paced the fleet out front and ultimately finished first, taking line honors again. Ultra crossed second, with Jackson following right behind him, crossing third, and Neil crossing fourth.
