We had 5 Trudeau 12m yachts race in great conditions. We sailed the Short Olympic followed by the Trapezoid. Everyone finished.

North Sea Open Regatta – July 27th 2016

The big boat fleet stretching out across The North Sea on the North Sea Manta course.

The sims calmed down to provide for a great day of racing in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. We had two DNF’s for the entire regatta, which was a nice turn around from some of the races in the past week. Plus, we had a wonderful turnout for both races.

This weeks small boats fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course Long, was made up a nice mix of three Bandit IF’s, two Nacra 17’s, a Dolphin Moth, a Patchogue II, a Leetle Cat II, a Quest 2M, a Melges-24, a Shields Class, and a Bandit 25. The fleet got off too a great start with no fouls. The fleet spread out over the course as the Cole’s, and Stu with Becca’s Nacra 17’s, Beane’s Melges-24 and my Dolphin Moth took up the lead. Lampoon’s Leetle Cat II, Arya’s Quest 2m, and Jamie’s Shields Class followed suit. Then Bandit IF’s of Macz, Rulette, and Cranston with Shaylin, along with Carrie’s Bandit 25, made up the center of the fleet, while the Cor’s Patchogue II took up the rear. Unfortunately Crantson did crash and recorded a DNF along with Lampoon recording a DNF.

The big boat float saw a really nice turnout with 14 boats racing on North Sea Manta. Comprised of a majority of four Ushuaia’s, followed by three Trudeau 12 Metre’s, two One Design 65’s, a Quest IACC, a Wildcat AC45 and a brand spanking new WildWind RC-44R, the fleet was crowded. Lampoon started things off trying a risky port tack start that didn’t pay off as he wound up fouling a boat coming across the line, so he took a 360 penalty turn. The fleet sped off as Cole’s AC45 led the charge with Carrie’s and Beane’s OD-65’s not far behind. Arya’s new Wildwind RC-44R was next followed by the Ushuaia and 12 Metre pack that was intertwined through the course.

Bandit Regatta – July 25th 2016

When it rains, it pours and today was no exception in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. Very rarely do we see sim weather as bad as we saw today, with four sims causing crashes in The North Sea. With all that adversity, we still had some great racing. Plus, we saw Bettie, with Ansa as her crew, sailing in their first North Sea races after starting this past weekend in Fruit Islands IF races.

This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of five Bandit IF’s. A Bandit 55 and a Bandit 60 made up the remainder of the fleet.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13A, got off to a great start, with everyone crossing the line clean and quick. However, things quickly turned for the worse with the Bullace region claiming Bettie, along with Ansa, causing them to record a DNF on the first leg of the course. Things did not get much better as the fleet made it around Genip and back to Ziziphus on the second to last leg. As the fleet crossed back through Bullace, the region would claim five more of the fleet. Cranston, in his Bandit 60, was able to survive and make it across the line to finish the race.

With all the turmoil that the Bullace region caused, along with some declining performance in Ziziphus and Mammea, Petra went ahead with restarting those regions. Not wanting to tempt fate, the course for the second race was changed to have the fleet avoid Bullace entirely, with 3 laps of NS Short Loop. Once again, the fleet got off to a great start, and ran two of the three laps with no incident. Then Eden Fulmar decided it did not want to be left out of the stormy region list and claimed four of the six fleet. Alexandre was the able to persevere and cross the finish line.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – July 21st 2016

Smooth sim weather, a corner crash, and some exciting tactics racing featured in this weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta, in The North Sea. The sims behaved today with no crashes due to sim weather. We did have one DNF, with Joshua meeting his DNF fate ‘tickling a corner’, as Petra would say. This weeks fleet was made up of two Patchogue II’s, two 12 Metre’s and a Trudeau One.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13A, saw a great clean start from the fleet. The 12 Metre’s of Cole and Jamie, with Bell crewing for Jamie, took off in the lead. Joshua’s and my Patchogue II’s followed with Sue close behind in her Trudeau One. Joshua wound up crashing, and unfortunately recording a DNF, due to hitting the corner of Sloe and Sapodilla. The rest of the course was uneventful with Cole and Jamie crossing first followed by Sue, then myself.

The second race, on North Sea Extreme, created by today’s race director Julia, saw another clean start by the fleet. Once again, Cole’s and Jamie’s 12 Metre’s took off in the lead. Joshua, Sue and I followed while staying in a relatively tight pack throughout this course. The only changes were the lines we took to get to the course marks. The Patchogue II plays well for using tactics while racing, with plenty on display in this race. Josh and I both sailed different lines and exchanged positions several times using every tactic we knew. At the end, Cole took line honors, followed by Jamie, then Sue. Then finally, I crossed the line just 2 seconds ahead of Joshua, in what was an exciting finish.

Bandit Regatta – July 18th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta started off with great sim weather, only to finish with a rough storm. This weeks fleet was made up of three Bandit IF’s, a Bandit 55, and a Bandit 60. We ran our monthly ‘There and Back Again’ from Breadnut to Eden Auk and back. Previous to the start of the race, we had four of the sims along the course restarted do to crossing problems, the same problems rearing it’s ugly head all over LL mainland water sims. That seemed to calm things, but not for long.

The first course, North Sea Breadnut to Eden Auk, got off to a great start. Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, and Cranston, with Shaylin in his Bandit 60, surged ahead of the fleet. Stu, in his Bandit IF, and Conner, in his Bandit 55, where up next with Jackson, in his Bandit IF, at the rear. Alexandre and Cranston stayed close together until the second course mark in Mammea. After rounding the mark in Mammea, Alexandre built up a sizable lead on the way to the finish line and line honors.

The second course, North Sea Eden Auk to Breadnut, the ‘back again’ portion of the race, saw another clean start from the entire fleet. Alexandre was able to pull off a clean port tack start before the rest of the fleet were able to make it to the line. Cranston was next across the line with Stu, Conner, and Jackson following. Everything was going splendidly for the fleet until the second mark in Eden Fulmer. Once rounding the mark and taking a starboard tack east into Eden Albatros, that region decided physics was an option everyone did not need and movement ground to a halt. The entire fleet was parked on the sim crossing. Fortunately, Cranston and Alexandre were able to recover and get their boats out of Eden Albatros and sailing again. Cranston took line honors with Alexandre taking second across the line. The rest of the fleet recorded DNF’s.

North Sea Open Regatta – July 13th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta had a nice turn out with some stormy sim weather that turned a bit calmer toward the end. We had several crashes during the first race however the sims settled down for the second race with only one DNF that was not crash related.

This week also saw us updating the handicap for The Mesh Shop Ushuaia to 0.60 (old 0.69). This was due to the recently released update that fixed a bug that allowed a speed boost upwind.

We would also like to welcome Wolfbite, who was racing in his first North Sea regatta. He joins us after getting his feet wet in Rainbow Sails YC’s 12 Metre races in The North Sea on Sunday mornings at 4 AM SL time.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Circle, was made up of a majority of Nacra 17’s, which is steadily seeing some renewed popularity over the last two months. The remainder of the small boat fleet was made up of two Bandit IF’s, two Flying Shadow’s, and a Dolphin Moth. The race got off to a great clean start, however turbulence was around the corner as Arya, on her Nacra 17, and Joshua, on his Flying Shadow, both crashed and recorded DNF’s. The remainder of the fleet pressed on with my Dolphin Moth zipping out front and taking line honors. Cole was not far behind, on her Nacra 17, and claimed second cross the line. Stu, on his Nacra 17 with Becca crewing, Red, in her Bandit IF, and Jackson, on his Bandit IF, followed across the line in short order.

The big boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course Long, saw smoother seas and was made up of a majority of The Mesh Shop Ushuaia’s, with three. The rest of the fleet was comprised of two One Design 65’s, an ACA33, and a Trudeau 12 Metre. The start was a bit rough with Bean, in her One Design 65, barging Joshua, sailing his Ushuaia, which pushed him into my Ushuaia. Beane did a penalty turn however and proceeded on. Unfortunately, Joshua wound up recording a DNF not soon after. Arya, after recording a DNF in the small boat race, recovered for a great race with her One Design 65 and sped off to take line honors with Beane close behind. Cole, in her ACA33, was third across the line, with my Ushuaia fourth and newcomer Wolfbite, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, close behind me crossing fifth. Stu, in his Ushuaia with Becca as crew, brought up the rear to finish sixth across the line

Bandit Regatta – July 11th 2016

Wonderful calm sims along with some nice crewed racing featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The sims behaved in both races with the entire fleet finishing in both. We also saw some nice crewed racing, with all but one boat racing with crew in the second race.

This weeks fleet was made up entirely of Bandit IF’s. This made compiling the results easier as no handicaps had to be applied. We saw half the fleet race with crew in the first race and 3 out of 4 boats in the second race with crew. Needless to say, the IF appears to sail slightly better with the additional crew helping with balance.

The first race, on North Sea Olympic Course Long, saw a clean start and smooth racing for everyone. Red got across the line first and Josh, with Petra crewing, was right behind. Stu was next, with Becca crewing, and finally Rosie was the last to cross. Red’s lead would not last for long though as Josh passed her and started to pick up a sizable lead that held to the finish.

The second race, on NS S4L 2015 B, saw Red pick up crew when Alexandre arrived and jumped on board. The fleet once again got off to a smooth clean start. Red again got across first with Stu and then Josh in pursuit. Rosie once again was the last to start. Red’s lead held this time however, with Josh and Stu changing positions just behind her. Red ran into some trouble on the final leg as she crashed to her desktop while just passing the radio station in Soncoya. Red was able to get back in, recover and maintain her lead still and finished in first place. Josh also ran into some trouble as he had script errors and lost complete boat control. Josh wound up re-logging and recovered well still, finishing in third place.

North Sea Open Regatta – July 6th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta was a mixed bag of sim weather with a great turnout. The small boat saw excellent sims with no crashes and smooth crossings. The big boats, however, saw bumpy seas with half the fleet recording DNF’s from crashing on the third leg of the race in the Muskmelon region.

This weeks small boat fleet was comprised of a majority of Nacra 17’s with four. Two Bandit IF’s and a Dolphin Moth made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. With a majority of three Ushuaia’s. followed by two AC45’s, an Open 60, One Design 65, Rene Marine 30, and a Trudeau 12 Metre for nine boats, the big boat fleet was slightly larger.

The small boat race, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course Long, got off to a clean start. Racing was tight among Arya’s and Cole’s Nacra 17’s, with my Dolphin Moth jumping out in front of them. Red’s and Rulette’s Bandit IF’s followed not far behind. Arya picked up the pace and took the lead among the Nacra 17’s and ultimately took 2nd across the line.

The big boat race, on North Sea Manta, got off to a great clean start. Bumpy sims were in store, however, as Arya’s Open 60, Jamie’s Trudeau 12 Metre, Stu’s Ushuaia, and my One Design 65 succumbed to crashes in the Muskmelon region and ultimately DNF”s. Viv and Cole’s AC45’s actually made it through ahead of us unharmed and to first and second for line honors. Bandit Regatta – July 4th 2016

This weeks US holiday edition of the North Sea Bandit Regatta so a nice turnout with, great racing, and nice sim weather. It was US Independence Day and our fleet surely packed some fireworks. The sims were behaving with no crashes. Our only DNF was due to first time North Sea racer Achilles bowing out of the first race early. This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of Bandit IF’s with 5. A Bandit 55, Bandit 60, and Bandit 25 made up the remainder.

The first race, on the North Sea Olympic Long course, saw some really exciting racing between Angelic, in her Bandit IF and Stu, in his Bandit 60, as they both chased after Alexandre, with Natalie as crew. Alexandre got out to a bit of an early lead over Angelic and Stu, that he never relinquished. Rosie, in her Bandit 25, was actually at the head of the fleet and took line honors.

The second race, on the North See Short Loop course with 3 laps, saw more of the same exciting racing between Angelic, Alexandre and Stu. Angelic wound up passing Stu on the first lap and never looked back. Rosie once again took line honors, in her speedy Bandit 25.

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
