Mild seas and a great fleet turnout highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The regions of The North Sea were generally behaved as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, split evenly with two in each portion of the regatta. Of those four DNFs, two were due to skippers pulling their boats, one after being caught in irons and another after RL interrupted. The remaining two DNFs were due to crashes, one from a border crossing and another from a skipper crossing on region corners. The crowd that gathered on the small race dock, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, reveled in the great fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Dolphin Moths, one crewed The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, one Bandit IF, one Bandit 25r, one Quest 2m, one Quest M-24, and one ReneMarine Clever rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a majority of five Wildwind Open 60s. Three TMS One Design 65s, two TMS Cafe del Mar 75s, one TMS Volvo Open 70, and one Wildwind RC-44r rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Edit: The points tables has been corrected to fix an error on the big boat portion value for Julie (JulieRoyale Resident). The results have been adjusted accordingly.

Saturday morning, after I sent the announcement, I already had a number of skippers in my IM stating, “The same USB stares in twice”, “The map is the same twice”. Yes that’s right I said. What’s wrong with sailing the same route twice, a route that no one has sailed yet. The difference between the two races would be the wind direction. This would make the route feel different.

Saturday afternoon, Finally the time had come. This time we had nine Bandit IFs at the start, one Bandit IF with crew.
The North Sea regions behaved well and even in the Eden waters there was not a cloud in the sky. However, during the first race we already lost a boat right after the start.

We had a great start with 5 boats next to each other. The other 4 boats sailed around this group of 5. After rounding the first mark, they headed for Eden. The fleet there was still quite compact. On the way to the third mark half of the fleet sailed north of the island in Eden Owl and the other half sailed south of the island. By rounding the third mark, we had four boats in charge. After the fourth mark had been completed, the front runners set sail for the bridge of Eden Naturopolis. Chaos ensued here because this bridge was seemingly unknown to everyone.

Leaving Eden Naturopolis we had a different order in the leading group. The fleet would pass another narrow passage and then sail in the direction of the finish through the canal.

The start of the second race also went well, but the race director (RD) had decided to keep the skippers awake and set the countdown to 2 minutes. As a result, the fleet of seven boats fell apart a bit faster. Since we sailed the route again, everyone now knew that the bridge was in Eden Naturopolis. Two skippers did get the bridge on their heads when it closed again. The last leg was a challenge for most skippers because the wind was blowing more over the canal.

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualififed) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

the chaos was complete when the leader saw a road over the water and turn back.

A beautiful Thursday afternoon, with good sailing weather, the wind coming from the south west, and no sign of a thunderstorm. Today we had six Bandit IFs and five Bandit 22 LTEs, two IFs and one 22 were crewed.

The start of the first race went smoothly and the 22s were the first to turn around the first mark. After the race progressed, the 22s slowly moved away from the IFs so that the different races were easier to follow.

After the start of the second race a 22 left the fleet and sailed to the first mark via the west side. After the mark we already had a group of three 22s, followed by the rest of the fleet. The IFs stayed close together until the penultimate mark

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

A great fleet turnout, in light of some pesky region behavior, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally behaved for most, with the exception of the Sapote region which was offline until 5 minutes after the start of the small boat portion. Due to the Sapote regions late lunch, our originally planned courses of North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and North Sea Circle were changed to facilitate avoiding the gap left by the off line region. In light of the chaotic conditions, there was still only one DNF (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, due to a skipper crossing on a region corner. The crowd that first gathered on the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and then moved to follow and watch this weeks fleet, to the shores of the island in the Genip region, cheered on the close-knit fleet racing on display.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Cutlew to Jeager 01 course, was comprised of a majority of six Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one single-handed and one with crew, two TMS Nacra 17s, one TMS Star Class, one Bandit 25r, one Quest M-24, and one ReneMarine Clever1 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Thornback course, was comprised of a majority of four Wildwind Open 60s. Three TMS One Design 65s, two TMS Volvo Open 70s, one TMS Ushuaia, one Wildwind RC-44r, one Wildwind AC-62, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

A great fleet turnout, with clam seas that turned slightly choppy late, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions started off smooth and behaved for the 17 skippers that turnout out this week, with every skipper finishing the first race without a crash. The seas turned a bit choppy late, as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded during the second race. Of those four DNFs, two were due to skippers crossing on region corners, and the remaining two due to skippers crashing on crossings. The crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, cheered on the great fleet racing in display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta and North Sea Bowline courses, was comprised of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Six Bandit IFs, four sailing single-handed and two sailing with crew respectively, and four Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

The fleet rounds the green buoy, southwest of the island in the Ziziphus region, during the first race of the North Sea Bandit Regatta, on Monday, September 21st, 2020.

Today’s winner was Moon (moonglownight Resident), with Daenerys (blondij Resident) second, and Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Notes:
Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) both finished the first race tied with a final time of 0:11:27. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
jnx1e 916 0.75 687.00
Jacquimo 1206 0.57 687.42

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a 687.00 seconds finish over Jackson’s 687.42 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Daenerys (blondij Resident) both finished tied with 4 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish

blondij Resident 2 2

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Moon’s favor with having a first place finish over Daenerys’s second place finish as her best.

Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) and Jenna (jnx1e Resident) both finished tied with 12 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

It was a beautiful day for sailing, Saturday afternoon. This time we again had nine boats of the same class, namely Bandit IFs, two of the Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea regions behaved well and even in the Fruit waters there was not a cloud in the sky. However, during the first race, we had a storm in the Morinda region.

We had a good start and immediately after the start four skippers split off by tackling immediately. The rounding of the first mark went smoothly. After the third mark, two skippers had taken the lead, but they would end up in a thunderstorm. They were chased by a group of five boats. After the thunderstorm we had a front runner with a chasing group of four, which slowly fell apart.

The start of the second race was also excellent and a fleet of seven boats sailed to the first two marks, of which the first mark was an island. After the second mark, each skipper made their own way along the coastline to the third mark, dancing between tacking in time and not touching each other. At the third mark we had a leader who had split off, followed by a group of four and three boats. Between the fourth and sixth mark we had a hard fight for fourth and fifth place.

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualififed) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Calm seas, with a late storm, and a great fleet turnout highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of the North Sea were calm for most during the first race, as only one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded. A storm arrived during the second race, as three additional DNFs occurred. Two of those additional DNFs were due to crashes on region crossings, while the third DNF was due to a skipper crossing at region corners. The crowd that gathered on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, and at the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, cheered on the fleet-foiled feline frenzy from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Copacabana Reverse and North Sea Extreme Reverse courses, was comprised of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing with crew and one sailing single-handed respectively. Three TMS Nacra 17s, and two Wildwind AC-45s rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

A beautiful Thursday afternoon, with good sailing weather, the wind coming from the south west, and no sign of a thunderstorm. Today we had eight Bandit IFs and three Bandit 22 LTEs, with one IF having extra crew on board.

The start of the first race went smoothly and it was going to be a great race with the three 22s split from the eight IFs right from the start. Out of these eight Bandit IFs, two boats would split off from the other six.

The start of the second race was almost the same as the first race. The three 22s took the lead right from the start. The seven Bandit IFs followed closely behind. The race ran through the heart of the Appleberry region.

We had one DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.
