North Sea Open Regatta – September 28th 2016

Choppy initial seas and a large turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The sims were a bit rough during the first race, as roughly a third of the small boat fleet crashed, recording DNF’s. The sims recovered for the large boat race, as only DNF was recorded there. We also saw a large turnout of 13 boats in the small boat fleet and 10 boats for the big boat fleet.

The small boat fleet, racing 3 laps on North Sea Short Loop, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IF’s. The remainder of the fleet was comprised of a Dolphin Moth, a Shields Class, A Flying Shadow, a Trudeau One, a Melges-24, and a Nacra 17. The race got off to an exciting start as Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, Jackson, in his Bandit IF, and myself, in my Dolphin Moth all crossed the line at 00:00:05. Lucy, in her Melges-24, was next across at 00:00:07. Stu, in his Bandit IF with Becca as crew, followed at 00:00:15. Cor, in his Trudeau One, and ViV, in her Flying Shadow, were next across, both at 00:00:24. Neil, in his Bandit IF, was next at 00:00:33, with Lampoon, in his Shields Class with Patricio as crew, was next at 00:00:51. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, was next at 00:00:58, followed by Cole, in her Nacra 17, at 00:01:06. Cranston, in his Bandit IF with Shaylin as crew, was next at 00:02:13, with Susi, in her Bandit IF, following at 00:02:43. Trouble was brewing however, as the region crossing into Breadnut to complete the first lap took out Stu, Cranston, Cole, and Susi, all recording DNF”s. Lucy lasted for one more lap before she crashed and recorded a DNF. My faster Dolphin Moth paced the fleet as I grew and maintained a steady lead out front. ViV, in her speedy Flying Shadow made some moves, moving up to second in the pack. Lampoon, in his Shields Class with Patricio, placed himself comfortably in the third spot in the pack. Cor, in his Trudeau One, was right behind him, The IF pack was next with Alexandre, Jackson, Carlota, and Neil. This order would hold until the finish, as I took line honors, followed by ViV, Lampoon, Cor, Alexandre, Jackson, Carlota, and Neil.

The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a very slim triple split majority of two Ushuaia’s, two Wildwind RC-44’s, and two Bandit 60’s. The rest of the fleet contained a Trudeau Francois Jacques, Trudeau 12 Metre, an ACA33, and a Wildwind AC-62. Racing again got off to an exciting start as ViV, in her speedy AC-62, crossed the line first at 00:00:04. Stu, in his Ushuaia with Becca as crew, and Cor, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, were next across the line at 00:00:08. Lampoon, in his ACA33, and Lucy, in her RC-44, were both next across at 00:00:12. Kristaly, in her Trudeau Francois Jacques, was next across at 00:00:16 with Alexandre, in his RC-44, following at 00:00:22. Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin as crew, was up next at 00:00:39 with Jackson, in his Bandit 60, following at 00:01:32. Susi, in her Ushuaia, next across at 00:03:24. ViV’s lead would not last as she unfortunately crashed and recorded a DNF. Alexandre and Lucy, both in their RC-44’s, would make moves to place themselves first and second at the head of the fleet. Lampoon, in his ACA33, stayed right on Lucy’s stern in third. Stu, in his Ushuaia with Becca, and Cor, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, stuck tightly together in fourth and fifth in the fleet, respectively. Kristaly was in the middle of the fleet, in her Francois Jacques, while Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, and Jackson, in his Bandit 60, trailed right behind. Susi, in her Ushuaia, was steadily making progress in the rear of the fleet. This order stayed as well, with Alexandre taking line honors and Lucy right behind him across the finish, Lampoon was next, followed by Stu, with Becca, Cor, Kristaly, Cranston, with Shaylin, and Jackson. Susi followed for her first ever finish of a race in SL. Well done, Susi.

Bandit Regatta – September 26th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta was another all Bandit IF affair during some great sim weather. The fleet this week was entirely comprised of Bandit IF’s with 7 strong. The sims held up wonderfully for both races, as well. We would also like to welcome Carlota and Anne both back to racing in The North Sea after a summer break absence.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, saw Ultra setting up for a great start and crossing at 00:00:06 with Anne showing hardly any rust at all, from her absence, crossing at 00:00:09. Unfortunately, Anne’s connection wouldn’t hold as all the sims around the Breadnut starting region showed red to her and she disconnected on the region crossing, ultimately taking a DNF. Alexandre was next across at 00:00:17 with Carlota right in tow at 00:00:24. Jackson followed at 00:00:44 with Stu, with Becca, crossing at 00:00:56, and Neil, crossing at 00:00:58, in hot pursuit. Ultra’s lead wouldn’t hold however, as he slipped back towards the rear of the fleet with, Alexandre, Carlota, Jackson, and Neil all making moves past him. Alexandre would hold his eventual lead until the end, finishing first with line honors. Carlota was next to finish, with Jackson, Neil, Ultra, and Stu, with Becca, all following.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course, saw another great start with Anne, with even less rust, crossing the line first, at 00:00:04, with her connection holding on for her as she stayed connected. Stu, with Becca, was next across at 00:00:08, with Ultra right in tow, at 00:00:11. Alexandre was next across, at 00:00:015, followed by Carlota at 00:00:23. Jackson followed at 00:00:36, with Neil making it across at 00:00:40. Anne wouldn’t hold her lead, falling back to the rear of the fleet as the rest made moves to pass her. Alexandre once again took the lead and paces the fleet with Carlota right behind him. Ultra would fall in right behind Carlota while Stu, with Becca, was in tow on her stern. Jackson was next with Neil in pursuit. Alexandre’s lead held as she finished first, taking line honors for both races. Carlota was next to finish with, Ultra, Stu with Becca, Jackson, Neil and Anne all following.

Josh DSQ in the 1st race, for ROW infringement on Alex just before the finish (no penalty taken). Josh was on a Port tack and Alex on a Starboard tack with a line to the finish line (image below taken one second after the colission). Josh had no line and should have gybed before crossing in front of Alex and forcing a collision.

North Sea Open Regatta – September 21st 2016

This weeks winds, in The North Sea, were back to normal for the North Sea Open Regatta. Winds picked back up to 18kts, from last weeks 15kts, as the sims continued to behave with good performance. We also had the pleasure of being filmed by Andytex Dumpling, who made a video of the big boat race, which is posted below.

The small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Manta, was made up of a majority of six Bandit IF’s. The remainder of the small boat fleet was comprised of a single Flying Shadow and a Patchogue II. The start saw Neil, in his Bandit IF, getting an almost perfect run at the line as he crossed at 00:00:01. Viv, in her Flying Shadow, was across next at 00:00:10 with Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, in tow at 00:00:13. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, followed at 00:00:18 by Cranston, with Shaylin in his Bandit IF, next along at 00:00:47. Stu, in his Bandit IF, crossed at 00:00:59, followed by Dess, in her Patchogue II, across at 00:01:34 and finally Romario, in his Bandit IF, crossing at 00:01:35. Viv sped ahead, in her faster Flying Shadow, taking the lead. Alexandre, Jackson, and Cranston, all in Bandit IF’s, made moves to pass Neil as he fell to fifth in the fleet. Stu, in his Bandit IF, unfortunately crashed , recording a DNF for the race. Viv held her lead until the finish, taking line honors as she crossed first. Alexandre was next, followed by Jackson, Cranston with Shaylin, Neil, Dess and finally Romario.

The big boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), featured a majority of four Wildwind RC-44’s. The rest of the fleet was made up of a Trudeau Francois Jacques, an Ushuaia, a Bandit 60, an ACA33, and a One Design 65. Racing got off to a great start as almost half the fleet was across at 10 seconds. Cole, in her ACA33, was first across at an excellent 00:00:01. Beane, in her One Design 65, followed at 00:00:05. Stu, in his Ushuaia, was right on Beane’s stern at 00:00:06. Kristally, in her Trudeau Francois Jacques, was next at 00:00:09. Gail was next across at 00:00:12, with Niki in her RC-44, followed by Cranston, with Shaylin in his Bandit 60, at 00:00:13. Dess followed next, in her RC-44, at 00:00:15, followed by Alexandre, in his RC-44, at 00:00:21, and Viv, in her One Design 65, at 00:00:24. Beane, in her faster RC-44, over took Cole, in her slower ACA33, as Cole fell back to the middle of the fleet. Alexandre, in his RC-44, Viv, in her One Design 65, and Dess, in her RC-44, all passed Cole as they made an exciting show of tight racing at the front of the fleet. Gail, with Niki in her RC-44, was nipping on Cole’s stern with Stu, in his Ushuaia, and Cranston, with Shaylin in his Bandit 60, at the rear of the fleet. Unfortunately Kristaly, in her Francois Jacques, crashed and recorded a DNF. Beane, Alexandre and Viv were all neck and neck as they approached the finish with Beane just beating both to the line to cross first and take line honors. Dess was next across with Cole right behind her. Gail, with Niki, finished next followed by Stu and then Cranston, with Shaylin.

We would like to say a special goodbye to one of our sailors who is moving along to great adventures in real life. Dess, who has been great fun to watch racing with us, will be away from SL for an extended period of time. Today was her last regatta with us. We wound up having a small send away party, after the regatta, at Tortuga Bay for her. Dess, we wish you safe travels.

Bandit Regatta – September 19th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta, featuring our monthly There and Back Again set of courses, saw some really tight exciting racing and continued smooth sim weather. We had no crashes due to the sim weather as everyone finished, except Burton who bowed out of the second race. This week’s fleet was made up of a solid majority of Bandit IF’s with one lone Bandit 50, Cor’s, in the first race. Cor switch his Bandit 50 for his Bandit IF in the second race making it an all IF fleet.

The first race, the ‘There’ trip on the North Sea Breadnut to Eden Auk course, got off to a great clean start with Jackson across the line first. Cor was next followed by Ultra, Neil, Burton with Pesha, and finally Gail. Cor’s speedier Bandit 50 allowed him to jump out in front, leading the fleet around the first mark, just south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. Cor would hold the lead for the rest of the course and take line honors, finishing first. Jackson was next to finish followed by Ultra, Neil, Burton, and then Gail.

The second race, the ‘Back Again’ trip on the North Sea Eden Auk to Breadnut course, saw the wind shift from SW (225°) to SE (135°). Cor switched out his Bandit 50 for his Bandit IF for this race, making this an all IF fleet. The fleet started well again, with no fouls, as Neil grabbed a great time advantage, starting 34 seconds before anyone else. Jackson was next across with Ultra, Cor, Gail and finally Burton with Pesha. The battle up front was exciting as Ultra made up ground on Neil and ultimately passed him on the second leg. Jackson wasn’t far behind, as he nipped on the sterns of Ultra and Neil. At the rear of the fleet, Burton bowed out, taking a DNF half way through the course leaving Cor and Gail in a spirited battled. Ultra ultimately held his lead to take line honors and finish first with Neil crossing next. Jackson was right behind them, across, with Gail next and finally Cor.

RC-44 Regatta – September 15th 2016

Fun, quick racing featured in this weeks North Sea RC-44 Regatta. We had a nice crowd turn out to spectate from the dock to witness some quick racing from the RC-44’s that turned up today. We also saw some great starts from the fleet as everyone’s efforts in practicing their pre-starts is paying off.

Race 1, on the North Sea Copacabana course, saw a nice start as Dess was across at 00:00:01, with Beane right on her stern at 00:00:04 and Cor right behind at 00:00:07. Dess’s pre-start practice is really bearing fruit. Gail was next across at 00:00:14 followed by Burton, with Pesha as crew, at 00:00:18. This order would hold for the duration of the race as Dess would take line honors. Beane would finish second, followed by Cor, Gail and Burton.

Race 2, a 3 lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, saw another great start with Gail, in her second week of racing in The North Sea, crossing first at 00:00:01. Gail has also been practicing her pre-starts and that showed well in this race. Cor was next across at 00:00:03, with Beane right on his stern at 00:00:04. Burton, with Pesha as crew, was next across at 00:00:25. Dess, who just missed the start line on her first run across, circled around and was next at 00:01:18. Unfortunately, both Cor and Dess wound up crashing on the second lap of the race and recording DNF’s. Beane would go on to lead the fleet and ultimately take line honors, with Gail coming across second and Burton, with Pesha, coming across third.

North Sea Open Regatta – September 14th 2016

Close sailing and slower winds showcased during this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The seas continued to be calm and dependable, performance wise, with reduced winds of 15kts, down from our usually gusty 18kts. Sailing was closer, due to the reduced winds, as the faster boats stayed closer in with the fleet.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on the NS-SOL-13A course, was made up of a majority four Bandit IF’s. The remainder of the fleet was comprised of two Dolphin Moths, two Flying Shadows, a Leetle Cat II, a Trudeau One, a Patchogue II, a Melges-24, and a Nacra 17. Racing got of to a great clean start as Cole, in her Nacra 17, crossed the line first, followed by myself, in my Dolphin Moth, then Lucy, in her Melges-24. Jackson was next across, in his Bandit IF, followed by Stu, in his Bandit IF, ViV, in her Flying Shadow, Gail, in her Dolphin Moth, and Beane, in her Flying Shadow, and Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossing at the same time. Cor, in his Trudeau One, followed next with Cranston, with Shaylin as crew in his Bandit IF, Lampoon, in his Leetle Cat II, and Dess, in her Patchogue II following last. The fleet held more tightly together than usual, with the slower winds, as my Dolphin Moth still darted out in front with Gail’s Dolphin Moth not far behind. Cole was still leading the rest of the fleet, in her Nacra 17, with Beane and ViV, in their Flying Shadows, taking up position behind her. Lucy was in the middle of the pack, in her Melges-24, just ahead of the Band IF pack of Jackson, Neil and Stu. Cor followed up, in his Trudeau One, with Cranston, with Shaylin, holding up the rear. Unfortunately, both Lampoon and Dess crashed, recording DNF’s. The fleet order held till the finish, as I crossed first to take line honors, with Gail just behind me. Gail has been practicing on her Dolphin Moth, and it shows because her lap time was only 5 seconds off of my own. The catamaran contingent of the fleet was next across, with Cole, in her Nacra 17, then both Beane and Viv, in their Flying Shadows. Lucy was next to cross, in her Melges-24. The Bandit IF contingent came next, with Jackson, Neil and then Stu across. Cor finally came in with his Trudeau One. Cranston, with Shaylin in his Bandit IF, was last to cross.

The big boat fleet this week, racing on the NS-1b course, was made up of a majority of three Wildwind RC-44’s. Two Ushuaias, two Open 60’s, a Trudeau 12 Metre, a Bandit 60, and a ACA33 made up the remainder of the fleet. The wind was still at the slightly slower 15kts and it showed in this race as the fleet stayed tighter together. The start was a bit bumpy as Gail and Cor both had a bit of a lag issue as their viewers froze and almost caused them both to cause barging situations. However, they did recover and contact was averted. Cole was across the line first, in her ACA33, with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin as crew, Beane, in her RC-44, and myself, in my Ushuaia, next across. Gail was next across, in her Open 60, with Dess, in her RC-44, Stu, in his Ushuaia, Cor, in his 12 Metre, Lucy, in her RC-44, and finally, Viv, in her Open 60, next. Although crossing last, Viv moved up through the fleet to lead the pack for most of the way. Cole was right on her stern, in her ACA33, with the RC-44 pack of Beane, Dess, and Lucy, right behind. Gail wasn’t far behind, in her Open 60. Up next was the Ushuaia pack, with Stu and myself exchanging positions several times between each other. Cor was next, in his 12 Metre, followed by Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin. Viv held on to take line honors, in her Open 60, as Cole finished next behind her. The RC-44 pack of Beane, Dess, and Lucy all finished next. Gail then finished, in her Open 60. Stu and I both were neck and neck on the final leg to the finish, with myself just edging a position lead over him to finish ahead. Cor finished next, in his 12 Metre, with Cranston finishing next, in his Bandit 60.

Bandit Regatta – September 12th 2016

Great starts and more great sim weather featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The sims continue to showcase some great performance with little to no lag and smooth crossings, week after week here in The North Sea. We also got to see some really great starts, showing that pre-start routine practice is paying off. This week’s fleet was made up of a solid majority of five Bandit IF’s with one lone Bandit 60 making up the remainder. We also saw Neil (eager2discover Resident) return to the Bandit Regatta after a long absence from SL racing, welcome back Neil.

The first race, on the NS-WC Rch course, got off to a nice start with Jackson, in his Bandit IF, getting a really nice early start with a clean line right near the committee boat. Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, was across next followed by Jo, with Bettie as her crew in her Bandit IF. Ultramantra, in his Bandit IF, followed with Katana, in her Bandit 60, and Neil, in his Bandit IF, next.
Jackson continued to pace the fleet past the first mark, south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. However, Alexandre made some nice moves and gained the lead over Jackson. Ultramantra made some moves of his own, passing Jo and then Jackson to take up position behind Alexandre. Alexandre ultimately took line honors, crossing the finish line first, with Ultramantra, Jackson, and Jo following, all in their Bandit IF’s. Katana, in her Bandit 60, was next across the finish with Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossing next.

The second race, on the North Sea Manta course, showcased an even better start as a tight pack of four IF’s, lead by Alexandre and including Jo, with Bettie, Ultramantra and Jackson, crossed cleanly within seconds of each other. Katana, in her Bandit 60, was next to start with Neil, in his Bandit IF, following. The order of the fleet remained unchanged for the first portion of the course until Ultramantra, who was doing great in second, had a computer fault and his computer shutdown completely forcing him to record a DNF. It was Katana’s turn to show some moves as she passed Jackson and Jo, with Bettie, to overtake second in the fleet. Alexandre again took line honors as he crossed the finish line first. Katana was second across the line, followed by Jo, with Bettie, Jackson, and then Neil.

North Sea Open Regatta – September 7th 2016

Continued great sim weather and some more speed featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The sims again continued their streak of great performance with low lag and no crashed due to the sims themselves. We saw some more speed, as well, with two more Dolphin Moth’s competing in the small boats race, and a very solid field of RC-44’s in the big boats race.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Circle, was made up of a split majority of three Dolphin Moths and three Bandit IF’s. A Trudeau One, a Melges-24, and a Flying Shadow made up the remainder of the fleet. Racing got off to a quick start as Lucy, in her Melges-24, was across the line with me, in my Dolphin Moth, at the one second mark. Next across was Alexandre, in his bandit IF, followed by Joshua, in his Dolphin Moth. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, and Cranston, with Shaylin as crew in his Bandit IF, were next followed by Cor, in his Trudeau One. Beane was across next, in her Flying Shadow, followed by, new comer The North Sea, Gail, in her Dolphin Moth. I quickly sped ahead, with Joshua following right behind. Gail sped past everyone to follow right behind Joshua, as all three of our Dolphin Moth’s paced the fleet. Beane made some moves of her own, as she passed the bandit IF’s and Lucy’s Melges-24. Cor, in his Trudeau One, took up position in the middle rear of the fleet, with the slower Bandit IF pack following along in the rear. This order held for the finish as I took line honors with Joshua, and Gail right behind. Beane was next across to finish, with Lucy right behind her. Cor came across next with Jackson following behind.

The big boat fleet, racing on North Sea Manta, was made up a speedy majority of six Wildwind RC-44R’s. A Ushuaia, an Open 60, and a bandit 60 made up the remainder. Things got off to a speedy start in this race too, as Dess got a perfect start at 00:00:00 in her RC-44R. Beane was next across, in her RC-44R, at 00:00:01. Alexandre, in his RC-44R, followed next at 00:00:04. Cor, also in his RC-44R, followed next at 00:00:05. Lucy, in her RC-44R, was next at 00:00:07 followed by Gabi, in her RC-44R, at 00:00:09. All six RC-44R’s, more than half the fleet, were on the course before 10 seconds had elapsed, showing how quick these boats are to accelerate. I was across next, in my Ushuaia, followed by Gail, in her Open 60. Finally, Cranston, with Shaylin as crew, was across in his Bandit 60. The RC-44 pack continued to pace the fleet with Gail, in her Open 60, sneaking into the middle of that pack. Alexandre worked his way to the front of the RC-44 pack, and the fleet, with Dess staying right behind him followed by Beane. Gabi worked her way up to the middle of the RC-44 pack, with Lucy right behind her, followed by Cor. This lineup held to the finish as Alexandre took line honors. Dess was next across to finish, followed by Beane. Gail, in her Open 60, followed next with Gabi, Lucy, and Cor right behind. I was next across, with Cranston following along behind me.
