This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a beautiful winter Saturday afternoon. With the wind coming from the southwest, The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky. Today we had a fleet of thirteen Bandit IFs at the start. Six of the thirteen Bandit IFs had crew.

We had two great races. In the first race, the fleet spread across the North Sea immediately after the start to pass the first mark as groups of two boats. Several groups of four boats had already been formed by the passage of the second mark.

In the second race, we had a compact fleet of 12 boats from the start. After the race progressed, several small groups were formed.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Calm to choppy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of The North Sea were calm throughout the first race and then turned slightly choppy during the second race, as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. One of those DNFs was due to a skippers connection dying on her during the race, with the remaining DNF due to a skipper crashing while crossing on region corners. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and on the small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the finicky fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (Counter Clockwise) and North Sea Extreme Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively. Two WildWind AC-45s, and one Trudeau HepCat rounded out the catamaran fleet during the first race. For the second race, one single-handed Flying Shadow picked up crew, and the Trudeau HepCat skipper sailed a WildWind AC-45 instead.

This Thursday was a beautiful afternoon and a nice day for the last Thursday Triple Threat in February of 2021. With good wind coming from the south west again, The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky. Today we had four Bandit 22 LTES, six Bandit IFs and four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class on the starting line. One Star, one IF, and one 22 all had crew on board.

We had two great races. In the first race, the boats stayed together until the first mark, then the whistle slowly disintegrated and groups would form. The passage of the first mark was a bit chaotic because a number of skippers passed the mark incorrectly, they did try to solve this by returning, but the damage was already done. That is why I made a drawing with the explanation between CCW (counter-clockwise) and CW (clockwise). In the second race we had almost the same course as in the first race. The fleet stayed together until the first mark, then the fleet slowly spread out. A 22 made a nice move in the latter to sail exactly between a bandit IF and Star.

From today the scoring will be slightly different. Someone who is disqualified gets more points than someone who is unable to finish due to bad luck

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and five DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Calm seas, with another great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were once again well behaved for most as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, one a piece in each race due to skippers hitting region corners. The crowds that gathered on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, and on the observation deck of the lighthouse in the Ziziphus region cheered on some great displays of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of six Bandit IFs. Four Bandit 22 LTEs, three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, two sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, two Dolphin Moths, one TMS Nacra 17, one TMS Laser One, one Trudeau Patchogue II, and one TMS Star Class rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, also sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a small majority of four TMS I-Mocca 60s1. Three WildWind Open 60s, one Trudeau 12 Metre, one Bandit 50/3, and one WildWind AC-45 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

1The TMS I-Mocca 60 was recently updated to version 2.0 and now has an updated handicap as of the publishing of this results post. The new handicap value is 0.92, up from 0.89. Please see North Sea Handicap Table for more info about our handicap table and a link to the Google Sheet containing the data behind the calculations.

Moon (moonglownight Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the small boat portion for sailing an incorrect course, rounding the second mark, the pink buoy in the Eden Fulmar region, counter-clockwise instead of clockwise.

Cole (Colette Verino) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

jacquimo Resident 11 13

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Rider’s favor with having a ninth place finish over Sea’s tenth place and Jackson’s eleventh finishes as their best.

Erika (ErikaTwinkle Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished tied with 29 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, an eighteenth point finish in the small boat portion and an eleventh point finish in the big boat portion, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Erika and Moon remain tied in eighteenth place overall.

Smooth seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were on their best behavior as the only DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, four of which occurred, were due to skippers getting caught on the border between the Eden Curlew and Carob regions from the Carob region being full as the twenty boat fleet (with even more people as seven boats were sailing with crew) filled the avatar maximum for Carob1. The crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on the great fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop Mirror course and another round on the North Sea 01 course, was made up of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Eight Bandit IFs, five sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively, one Bandit 25 R, and one Bandit 60 rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

1Region avatar capacity is normally not an issue, even with the large size of the race fleets seen on average in The North Sea, as race fleets tend to spread out quickly within the first region on course side. This particular race used an 11 knot race wind, instead of the usual 18 knot winds that feature on most courses using this common first leg, which saw the fleet stay compact for much longer than usual.

Race Notes:
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and BalutA (balut24 Resident) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 13:15. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Rugger and BalutA receive 5.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 5 and 6, added together and divided equally.

Max (Maximiliano Szondi) and Priscilla (priss2112 Resident) both finished tied with 32 points.

This weeks Bandit IF Regatta was held on a beautiful winter Saturday afternoon in the tropical Fruit Islands and North Sea. This time we had a fleet of eleven Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the eleven Bandit IFs had crew.

After the start of the first race we had a compact fleet that was only heading for the first mark. This went surprisingly well. Near the Cherry region the fleet was still fairly close together. There they had to avoid an island alone. The rest of the race went without a hitch. At the gate in the Sapote region, the fleet was already fairly separated.

In the second race, we already had a fleet set out from the start. This is because the start with a south wind was uncomfortable. In the Bullace region, we had two front runners and a chasing group of five boats. one of the five boats got into trouble on its way back through the islands

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and two DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Of those four DNFs, three were due to skippers crashing from hitting regions corners, with the remainder due to a skipper crashing in the middle of a region. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Genip and Ziziphus regions, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the frantic fleet-foiled feline frenzy from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Summer Sailstice 01 (SS-01) and North Sea Double Loop courses, was made up of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, five sailing single-handed and two with crew respectively, and two WildWind AC-45s for the first race. The fleet makeup changed for the second race as the majority fell to six TMS Flying Shadows, split evenly between three crewed and three single-handed, one WildWind AC-45, and one Trudeau HepCat.

Race Notes:
Palani (Palani Allen), Rayz (Rayzza Rubble), and Moon (moonglownight Resident) all finished tied with 10 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Palani Allen 4 6
Rayzza Rubble 4 6
moonglownight Resident 5 5

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Palani’s and Rayz’s favor with having fourth place finishes over Moon’s fifth place finish as his best. As Palani and Rayz both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

The third Thursday Triple Threat for February 2021 had good wind coming from the south west again. The North Sea regions behaved well with not a cloud in the sky. Today we had six Bandit 22 LTEs and three Star Class on the starting line. A Star and 22 had crew on board. Later another 22 joined the group

We had two great matches. In the first race the boats stayed together for a long time, but soon there was a group with 22s and a group with Stars. In the second race we had almost the same course as in the first race, however a skipper crashed not far from the second mark.

Sailors should also ensure that they have no blind spots when sailing, because I do not think that is a good reason to overlook other skippers and therefore avoid a 360. There are enough camera HUDs to use and on the mini-map you can also see where everyone is. Or, can men really not multitask?

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Smooth seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm for most as only one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day, due to a skipper crashing to desktop in the middle of a region. The crowds that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions reveled in a great display of fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was made up of a split majority of three Bandit 22 LTEs, and three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class. Two Dolphin Moths, one ReneMarine Clever, one TMS Nacra 17, one TMS Flying Shadow, one Shields Class, and one crewed Bandit IF rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was made up of a majority of six TMS I-Mocca 60s. Four WildWind Open 60s, one WildWind AC-45, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Notes:
Palani (Palani Allen) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:11:08. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Palani 661 1.01 667.61
Maximiliano 1114 0.60 668.40

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Palani’s favor with having a 667.61 seconds finish over Max’s 668.40 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.
