Choppy to smooth seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were slightly choppy for the start of our monthly There and Back Again version of the regatta, with five DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day. All five of those DNFs occurred during the first portion of the regatta. Two DNFs were due to skippers crashing on region crossings. A third DNF was due to a skipper pulling her boat after being frustrated from getting caught in irons1, with the remaining two DNFs the result of skippers crashing while crossing on region corners. The seas calmed for the second race of the regatta, with every skipper staring and finishing out of a fleet of 16 boats. The crowd that initially gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and then followed the fleet, viewing from the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on the great racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Curlew to Jaeger 01 and North Sea Jaeger to Curlew 01 courses, was comprised of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, two sailing with crew and two sailing single-handed respectively, and two Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Race Notes:
Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for sailing an incorrect course, incorrectly rounding the final mark of the course, the red buoy in the Cocoa region.

Moon (moonglownight Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing while under protest without completing a 360° penalty turn due to a Rule 11 On The Same Tack, Overlapped foul.

Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) and Yumiko (yumikonakayama Resident) both finished the first race tied with a final time of 0:11:26. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Meireles 914 0.75 685.50
yumikonakayama 836 0.82 685.52

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Meireles’s favor with having a 685.50 seconds finish over Yumiko’s 685.52 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Sea (filax Carter) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) both finished tied with 13 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
filax Carter 2 11
Kim Farleigh 6 7

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sea’s favor with having a second place finish over Kim’s sixth place finish as her best.

Special NSR Summer Races – August 29th 2020

The fleet awaits the countdown start signal, before the first race of the North Sea Special Summer Races, on Saturday, August 29th, 2020.

Bandit B22: Micha, Jenna, Zim, Emi, Lokia, Jun

A beautiful Saturday afternoon at the end of a hot summer, with good sailing weather and the wind coming from the west and with no thunderstorm in sight. Also today, we invited several classes to make this Saturday afternoon a special match. We had nine Bandit IFs, one sailing with crew and eight sailing single-handed respectively, and six Bandit 22 LTEs.
Just like last weeks Special Summer Races, the boats all started simultaneously, but this meant two races would take place at the same time with boats competing against their own class.

The two races went pretty smoothly, but we had a ‘massive’ barging at the start of the second race.
Because the wind direction came from a different angle, the barging zone was also different than normal. A skipper should take this into account, apparently this was forgotten in the heat of the start.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and five DSQs (Disqualififed) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Saturday afternoon. A beautiful Saturday afternoon, at the end of a hot summer, with good sailing weather and not a single thunderstorm to be seen. Today we invited several classes to make this Saturday afternoon a special competition. So we had six Bandit IF’s and six Bandit 22 LTEs, with one IF having crew on board.
Just like last weeks, the boats would all start simultaneously, but this would mean that two races would take place at the same time.

We had a good start again. The first mark was rounded nicely and then everyone made their own way through Eden.

In the second race we did this again, but in reverse order.

We had seven DNFs (Did Not Finish) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Nihiwatu (Nihiwatu Resident) and Palani (Palani Allen) finished tied with 9 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Mild sim sailing weather, with another great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The regions of The North Sea were slightly choppy during the small boat portion of the regatta, as all four DNFs (Did Not Finish) for the day were recorded. Two of those DNFs were due to skippers crashing while crossing region corners. The remaining two DNFs were due to a skipper pulling his boat after he accidentally dropped his race wind and a skipper crashing on a region crossing. The crowds that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, cheered on the great displays of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was comprised of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one TMS Nacra 17, one crewed Bandit IF, one Bandit 25r, and one Quest M-24 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, this weeks big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (Counter-Clockwise) course, was comprised of a majority of seven Wildwind Open 60s. Three TMS One Design 65s, one TMS Pacha 110, and one Wildwind AC-62 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), with Moon (moonglownight Resident) second, and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.

Race Notes:
Kim (Kim Farleigh) and Isa (isab DeCuir) both finished the small boat portion tied with a final time of 0:09:51. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Kim Farleigh 1001 0.59 590.59
isab DeCuir 788 0.75 591.00

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Kim’s favor with having a 590.59 seconds finish over Isa’s 591.00 seconds finish.

Isa (isab DeCuir), Jenna (jnx1e Resident), and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) all finished tied with 10 points.

Nicole Myhre 4 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Isa’s and Jenna’s favor with having third place finishes over Zimtzicke’s fourth place finish as her best. As Isa and Jenna both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

In the last race, Isa breaks the tie with Jenna with her third place finish over Jenna’s seventh place finish.

Koichi (KoichiKato Resident), Penny (Penelope Debruyere), Micha (Micha Karfield), and JUN (since20171106 Resident) all finished tied with 25 points.

KoichiKato Resident 9 16
Penelope Debruyere 12 13
Micha Karfield 12 13
since20171106 Resident 12 13

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Koichi’s favor with having a ninth place finish over Penny’s, Micha’s, and JUN’s twelfth place finishes as their best. As Penny, Micha, and JUN all finished with the exact same finishes, DNFs (Did Not Finish) during the small boat portion and DNSs (Did Not Start) during the big boat portion respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore Penny, Micha, and JUN all remain tied in fourteenth place overall.

Mild seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The regions of The North Sea were calm for most, as five DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Three of those DNFs occurred during the first race, with two skippers hitting region corners and a third crashing on a region crossing. The remaining two DNFs occurred during the second race, as one skipper pulled his boat due to script errors and another crashed on a region crossing. The excited crowds on the both the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and on the observation deck of the lighthouse in the Ziziphus region, cheered on this weeks Bandit skippers as they put on a thrilling display of fleet racing. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and the North Sea Manta course, was comprised of a majority of twelve Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, three sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, and two Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Race Notes:
Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for sailing an incorrect course, he missed the second, third, and fourth course marks.

Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) and Fanny (fannydeep Resident) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 15:38. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Meireles and Fanny receive 11.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 11 and 12, added together and divided equally.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 20:05. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

Saturday was a beautiful afternoon, in the middle of a hot summer, with good sailing weather and not a single thunderstorm to be seen. Today we invited several classes to make this Saturday afternoon a special competition. So we had seven Bandit IFs and five Bandit 22 LTEs, all sailing single-handed.
Just like last week, the boats would all start at the same time, but this would lead to two races taking place at the same time.

We had a good start again. Immediately after the start a group of eight boats was formed. It was a nice mix of four Bandit IFs and four Bandit 22s. Between Eden Albatros and Eden Curlew we had two groups. A group of three Bandit 22s and a group of five Bandit IFs, making the mutual battle more visible.

In the second race we had a compact group of eleven boats, a Bandit IF was left behind. At Sapote the whole group was clear and we had another group of Bandit 22s and a group of Bandit Ifs, but this group was more spread over the north sea.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Micha (Micha Karfield) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director for a 18.2 GIVING MARK ROOM foul.

“18.2 Giving Mark-Room
(b) If boats are overlapped when the first of them reaches the zone, the outside boat at that moment shall
thereafter give the inside boat mark-room. If a boat is clear ahead when she reaches the zone,
the boat clear astern at that moment shall thereafter give her mark-room.“

Choppy to clearing seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The North Sea regions were stormy for the first race of The Cat Fight, as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded. Three of those DNFs were due to region crossing crashes, with the fourth from a skipper crossing at the region corners. After a restart of the Sapote region, it’s appetite being responsible for the three region crashes, the seas calmed down for the second race with only one DNF recorded. In light of the stormy weather, the crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and also on the observation deck of the lighthouse in the Ziziphus region, still cheered on and reveled in the great fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Triple Pink and North Sea Extreme Reverse courses, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Nacra 17s. Three TMS Flying Shadows rounded out the fleet for the first race. The second race saw the fleet composition change, with a majority of five TMS Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and one with crew respectively.
