Calm to choppy seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were well calm for the small boat portion but turned slightly choppy during the big boat portion as five DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first two DNFs, occurring during the small boat portion, were due to a skipper pulling his boat right after the start-line, and another skipper’s connection dying on her during the first leg. The three remaining DNFs, all occurring during the big boat portion, were from skippers crashing while crossing across region corners. The crowds that gathered on the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, were delighted by an electric display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline Reverse course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, two Bandit IFs, split evenly at one crewed and one single-handed respectively, one TMS Sea Boss – Rider, one TMS Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Bandit 25 R rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Roundabout course, was made up of a majority of five TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS One Design 65, one WildWind Open 60, one WildWind RC-44r, and one WildWind SC-40 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Big boat fleet, from the left (in boats): Emileigh (WildWind RC-44r), ViV (TMS I-Mocca 60), Ester (TMS I-Mocca 60), Max and Wyndi (WildWind Open 60), Jenna (TMS One Design 65), Aymalie (WildWind SC-40), Moon (TMS I-Mocca 60), Zimtzicke (TMS I-Mocca 60), and Sea (TMS I-Mocca 60). On the Race Committee Boat: Cryptic. On the dock: Daenerys, Red, Farryn, Yaline, Yola, Xiao, Leti, and Kama.

Today’s winner was Aymalie (Aymalie Resident), with Jenna (jnx1e Resident) second, and ViV (vivipezz Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Notes:
Xiǎo (XiaoMarque01 Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the small boat portion due to sailing without racewind.

Lilita (lilita Cifuentes) was disqualified (DSQ) during the small boat portion for sailing an incorrect course, rounding the sixth course mark, the pink buoy in the Eden Fulmar region, counter-clockwise instead of clockwise.

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and ViV (vivipezz Resident) both finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
jnx1e Resident 1 4
vivipezz Resident 2 3

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a first place finish over ViV’s second place finish as her best.

Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) both finished tied with 9 points.

Nicole Myhre 2 7
Emileigh Starbrook 4 5

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Zimtzicke’s favor with having a second place finish over Emileigh’s fourth place finish as her best.

Ester (citacg Resident) and Sea (filax Carter) both finished tied with 14 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
citacg Resident 5 9
filax Carter 7 7

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Ester’s favor with having a fifth place finish over Sea’s seventh place finish as her best.

Asher (AsherZacharias Resident), Red (RedHeadJO Resident), Xiǎo (XiaoMarque01 Resident), and Lilita (lilita Cifuentes) all finished tied with 22 points. As they all finished with the exact same points in each race, a 12 point finish in the small boat portion and 10 point finish in the big boat portion respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Asher, Red, Xiǎo, and Lilita all remain tied in twelfth place overall.
