The last North Sea Open Regatta1 for 2021 featured a great fleet turnout with nice sim sailing weather. The North Sea regions were on their best New Year’s behavior as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper’s router causing her to crash. After she reset her router, she was able to continue racing in the big boat portion. The second DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was due to skipper crashing while crossing across region corners. The crowds that gathered along the beaches on the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in a spirited display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, three sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively, rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Extreme course, was made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) I-Mocca 60s. One WildWind Open 60, one WildWind RC-44r, one TMS Pacha 110, one Bandit 50/3, and one Bandit 55 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

One Bandit IF had crew on board. The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We sailed two races.  In the first race we started with compact fleet and sailed from Eden Curlew to Dragonfruit. In the second race we sailed to a small area of the fruit Islands.  Between the islands we lost three skippers.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Calm seas, with a light fleet turnout, highlighted the last1 Cat Fight in The North Sea for 2021. With this being the last weekend before Christmas, many of our usual skippers had to bow out for real life as holiday festivities are under way. The North Sea regions were behaved for our skippers, as the only DNF (Did Not Finish) on they day, was due to a skipper pulling his boat after he mis-timed his start. The crowds that gathered on the the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in the festive fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and the North Sea Snipe course, was made up of a majority of two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, split evenly with one crewed and one single-handed respectively. One WildWind AC-45 rounded out the fleet for the first race. In the second race, a Flying Shadow skipper opted for his TMS Nacra 17 instead.

For the last Triple Threat race in 2021, we had stormy weather. During the first race we lost almost the entire Bandit 22 LTE and The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class fleet. The Bandit IFs braved the December storm. The competitions became open and the winner was only decided on the last few meters before the finish line.

Today, we had eleven boats, Four Bandit 22 LTEs, four Bandit IFs and three TMS Star Class at the starting line of the first race. One Star Class and Bandit 22 had crew on board

There were seven DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

As they all have the exact same finishes in both races, a DNF (Did Not Finish) during the first race and a DNS (Did Not Start) during the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Ani and Alex both remain tied in third place overall.

Juicy (juice651 Resident) and Siri (Sirius Rosca) finished tied with 7 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

Stormy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally behaved with only one DNF (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, due to a skipper crashing while crossing a region corner in the small boat portion. Our skippers endured the rough virtual seas, as LL still had not issued the all clear by the time the Open Regatta ended.

Race Notes:
Lilita (lilita Cifuentes) was disqualified during the first race for sailing an incorrect course, missing the fourth course mark, the blue buoy in the Sapote region.

Sea (filax Carter) was disqualified during the second race for sailing an incorrect course, rounding the first mark incorrectly, the blue buoy in the Sapote region.

Sea (filax Carter), Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) all finished tied with 12 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
filax Carter 2 10
ruggeromare Resident 4 8
Sirius Rosca 5 7

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sea’s favor with having a second place finish over Rugger’s fourth place, and Sirius’s fifth place finishes as their best.

This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in December. Today, the races were held Eden Curlew. This time we had a fleet of four Bandit IFs at the start. Two Bandit IFs had crew on board. The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We sailed three races. All three the race courses remained on the northeast side of The North Sea waters. In all races we started with compact fleets, making the races exciting. One sailor did rule the sea from begin to the finish in the first two races

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Slightly choppy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest for the duration of both races, The North Sea regions were fair for most as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Two of those DNFs were due to skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The remaining two DNFs were due to one skipper crashing on region crossings, once in each race. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the feisty fleet-foiled feline fury on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing a three lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course and another lap on the North Sea Double Loop course, was made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively. One WildWind AC-62, and one WildWind AC-45 rounded out the first race fleet. The fleet changed slightly for the second race, as the AC-62 skipper opted for her AC-45, and a Flying Shadow skipper opted for his TMS Nacra 17.

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
moonglownight Resident 2 1
vivipezz Resident 1 2

In the last race, Moon breaks the tie with ViV with his first place finish over ViV’s second place finish.

Race Notes:
Astrid (AstridNewBonham Resident) and Cate (Cate Sewell) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 13:24.7. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Therefore, both Astrid (AstridNewBonham Resident) and Cate (Cate Sewell) receive 5.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 5 and 6, added together and divided equally.
