Smooth seas, and a great fleet turnout highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm and behaved for all, as every skipper finished both portions of the regatta without a crash. The crowd that assembled on the small race dock, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, cheered on the great fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, one TMS Nacra 17, one Bandit 25r, one Quest 2m, and one Quest M-24 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (counter-clockwise) course, was made up of a majority of six Wildwind Open 60s. One TMS One Design 65, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one TMS Cafe del Mar 75, and one Wildwind AC-45r rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was Moon (moonglownight Resident), with Isa (isab DeCuir) second, and Jenna (jnx1e Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.
Race Notes:
Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the big boat portion for finishing under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director due to a Rule 10 On Opposite Tacks foul.
“10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.“

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Sea (filax Carter) both finished the big boat portion tied with a final time of 0:10:57. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)
Skipper |
Race Time |
Handicap |
Final Time |
Jenna |
650 |
1.01 |
656.50 |
Sea |
626 |
1.05 |
657.30 |
With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a 656.50 seconds finish over Sea’s 657.30 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Isa (isab DeCuir) both finished tied with 4 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
