Calm to choppy seas, with another nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were well behaved throughout the small boat portion as every skipper finished with nary a scratch. The waters turned a bit choppy during the big boat portion, however, as one DNF (Did Not Finish) occurred from a skipper crashing on a rough region crossing. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as along the Poseidon Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on some exciting racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (Counter-clockwise) course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Dolphin Moths, two Bandit IFs, one sailing crewed and one sailing single-handed respectively, one The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow sailing crewed, one TMS Nacra 17, and one TMS Laser One rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of six TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS Ushuaia, one Bandit 50.3 X, one ACA33, one WildWind Open 60, one WildWind AC-45, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out the big boat fleet.

Note: As of the race, the handicap for the TMS I-Mocca 60 is based on the current version 2.80, which there is no change from the version 2.75 in value. Also, the Bandit 50/3 X has been updated to 0.70 from a value of 0.69. Please see the North Sea Handicap Table for more info on our handicaps and the link to the Google Sheet used to calculate them.

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Red’s favor with having a 863.62 seconds finish over Zimtzicke’s 863.94 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Mildly choppy seas, and a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The North Sea regions were choppy for a few skippers, as although there were only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) on the day both in the first race, several skippers were un-sat from their boats across both races. Of those two DNFs, one was from a skipper crashing while crossing on region corners, with the remainder from a skipper losing all input control on their boat from a rough region crossing. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in the frisky fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Circle and North Sea Double Loop courses, was made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three crewed and two single-handed respectively. Two WildWind AC-45s, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Trudeau HepCat rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Thursday afternoon was a beautiful day for the North Sea Triple Threat Regatta. With good wind coming from the southwest again, The North Sea regions behaved well, and there was not a cloud in the sky. Today we had seven Bandit 22 LTEs and three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class on the starting line. Two Star Class had crew on board.

Why do skippers decide to run a 360° penalty turn just after or before a mark. Do they want to mislead other skippers, or do they think that this is the best place because there is a circle around a mark? The chance of hitting another skipper may be higher, as the other skippers don’t expect anyone to run a 360° turn there. I see this happening regularly. Stay away from the other boats when you are doing a 360° penalty turn.

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Olympic Short Mirror course and a 2 lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop Mirror course, was made up of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, split evenly at two crewed and two single-handed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Vergelia (Vergelia Resident) and Diana (Dianafra Allen) finished tied with 25 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a beautiful March Saturday afternoon, with wind coming from the southwest. The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky. We had a fleet of ten Bandit IFs at the start. Three of the ten Bandit IFs had crew

Today was the day of the obscure and belated protests, but also the day that a skipper deliberately committed a violation towards another skipper. If they want me to take stricter action, we will no longer tolerate conscientious violations. Unclear protests are not heard and you should not wait until after the finish, or like last time if an offense is committed, follow you, at the start of the race, wait until the end of the race

The good news … We’ll be sailing the same routes next week.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Race Notes:
Amy (Montserrat Naidoo) and Siri (Sirius Rosca) both finished the first race tied with a final time of 0:14:02. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Montserrat Naidoo 1452 0.58 842.16
Sirius Rosca 1404 0.60 842.40

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Amy’s favor with having a 842.16 seconds finish over Siri’s 842.40 seconds finish.

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Siri (Sirius Rosca) both finished tied with 9 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

Sirius Rosca 3 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Julie’s favor with having a first place finish over Siri’s third place finish as his best.

Calm to choppy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The North Sea regions were calm throughout the first race, as every skipper finished. However, a storm blew in during the second race, as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded. Of those four DNFs, two were due to skippers crashing while crossing on region corners, with the remaining two from skippers crashing on border crossings. The crowds that gathered along the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the frantic fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta Reverse and North Sea Extreme Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively. Three WildWind AC-45s, and one TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Thursday was a beautiful afternoon in March, and a nice day for the North Sea Thursday Triple Threat. With good wind coming again from the south west, The North Sea regions behaved well, and there was not a cloud in the sky. Today we had nine skippers on the starting line. At the very last moment, a tenth skipper joined the party. However, a skipper had to give up during the pre-start, so that we would start the race with nine boats.

Today we had two Bandit 22 LTEs, five Bandit IFs, and two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class. Yes, you read well. For the Bandit 22 LTE and Star Class we only had two participants, so today only a results for the Bandit IF counts.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.
