A stormy sea and some great racing featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. A storm rolled in during the first race as the Bullace region took out three quarters of the fleet as it was on the final leg, however a restart fixed the issue and the second race saw some great sim weather. The racing itself was exciting as several sailors made nice moves to pass and we even saw something of a drag race along the reach between Soncoya and Eden Fulmer in the second race. Spectators also made a good showing today along the usual places in Eden Albatros, Eden Puffin, Ziziphus, and in Breadnut. This weeks fleet was almost entirely a Bandit IF affair again, with the exception of one lone Bandit 25.
The first race, on the North Sea Manta course, saw an exciting start as Alexandre, Jackson and Carlota, all in Bandit IFs, lined up almost three abreast at one point in the pre-start area while heading to the start line only to narrowly space out and cross at 00:00:04, 00:00:07, and 00:00:09. Kurt, with Asami as crew, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:14, in his Bandit IF, followed by Neil, in his own Bandit IF, at 00:00:18. Ray, with Arwen as crew, crossed the start line next, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:33 followed by Margo, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:43, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:45. Shadow, in her Bandit 25, was next to cross the start line at 00:01:25 followed by Riv, with Ran as crew, in his Bandit IF, at 00:01:29. Things progressed well for the fleet as Alexandre and Jackson stayed tightly together fighting for the lead with Kurt and Asami, Ray and Arwen, Neil, Margo, and Susi following behind. Carlota wound up having trouble in the first sim after the start line, the Carob region, and wound up taking a DNF. Riv, with Ran in his Bandit IF, wound up passing Shadow, in her Bandit 25, as she got stuck in irons at the first mark in the Sapote region. As the fleet progressed to the final leg of North Sea Manta, through the Bullace region, tragedy struck as the sim itself crashed most who entered. Only Alexandre, Neil, and Shadow survived to make it to the finish line, finishing in that order. The rest of the fleet recorded DNFs.
The second race, on the North Sea Copacabana course, got off to a great start after the Bullace region was restarted to make for smooth sailing for the fleet. Kurt, with Asami, got things started, in his Bandit IF, as he headed for the start line with Jackson, and Alexandre, in their Bandit IFs as well, all once again lining up three abreast to cross the line at 00:00:02, 00:00:04, and 00:00:06. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:09 followed by Neil, in his Bandit IF, who was right on her stern. Susi, in her Bandit IF, was across the start line next at 00:00:18 followed by Ray, with Arwen, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:23. Margo, in her Bandit IF, was next to cross the start line at 00:0:31 followed by Shadow, in her Bandit 25, at 00:02:56. The fleet spread out once on the course side of the line as everyone picked their own lines to the first mark in the Soncoya region. Carlota, once again had trouble with her boat and wound up with another DNF as she did not make it past the first leg. Shadow had troubles as well on the first leg and wound up recording a DNF. The rest of the fleet met at the first mark, in the Soncoya region, and promptly made the reach to Eden Fulmer a drag race as Kurt, with Asami, and Alexandre, both in Bandit IFs, were side by side for most of that leg. Alexandre was leeward however and wound up sneaking through Kurt’s wind shadow to be first into the mark zone and the lead. The rest of the fleet, in Bandit IFs, fell in behind Alexandre and Kurt, with Jackson, Margo, Neil, Ray with Arwen, and Susi all following. Alexandre held his lead until the finish, crossing first and taking line honors as Kurt, with Asami, crossed the finish line second. Jackson was next to cross the finish line, followed by Margo, Neil, Ray with Arwen, and Susi.
