Bandit Regatta – November 28th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta saw some choppy sim weather along with some close racing. The sims behaved beautifully during the first race however, the Bullace region decided to dump the entire fleet and crash everyone during the second. We again saw a nice turn out of spectators along the coast of the Eden Alabatros region, the beaches along Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, at the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region, and at the committee boat dock in the Breadnut region. The fleet this week was another all Bandit IF affair, with six skippers showing, two with crew.

The first race, on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), saw a nice start as the entire fleet crossed the line in less than a minute. Kurt, with Asami, started things off, crossing the start line at 00:00:07. Neil was next, crossing the start line at 00:00:14 with Carlota right on his stern at 00:00:15. Jackson was next to cross the start line at 00:00:34 followed by Ray, with Arwen, at 00:00:43 and Susi at 00:00:52. Kurt would not hold on to his lead for long as Carlota made her move passed Neil and then Kurt to pace the fleet for the remainder of the course. Neil continued to fall back as Ray, with Arwen, and Jackson both would capitalize and pass him. Susi would take up position in the rear of the fleet, but not far from the rest as the entire fleet stayed tightly packed for most of the course. Carlota held onto her lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Kurt, with Asami, crossed the line second with Ray, with Arwen, Jackson, Niel, and Susi all following.

The second race, on the North Sea Trapezoid course, saw a really quick start with the entire fleet on the course side of the line as 24 seconds ticked on the race timer. Jackson got things started as he crossed the start line first at 00:00:02 followed by Carlota, at 00:00:03, who was windward to Jackson but cleanly crossing the line without making contact with him or pushing him from his proper course. Neil also crossed the line at 00:00:03, but was farther leeward to both Jackson and Carlota. Kurt, with Asami, was next to cross the start line, at 00:00:15, followed by Susi, at 00:00:16, and Ray, with Arwen, at 00:00:24. The fleet stayed tightly packed as Carlota took the lead with Jackson staying right on her stern threatening to overtake and pass her for most of the course. However, the sims turned from smooth to stormy as the Bullace region tossed every sailor in the fleet off line as they entered it. Susi was the only one able to recover her boat, after logging back in, and finished the race in first. The rest of the fleet recorded DNFs.

Susi (Susicat Oh) and Neil (eager2discover Resident) both finished tied with 7 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

North Sea Open Regatta – November 23rd 2016

Smooth sim weather, some fun sailing, and a nice turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The sims were fairly behaved for both races of the regatta as there was only one DNF in the small boats portion and two DNFs in the big boats portion. The sailing was fun and competitive as both fleets saw impressive starts and some tight racing. Spectators once again turned up in large numbers along the coast of the Eden Alabatros region, the beaches along Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, at the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region, and at the committee boat dock in the Breadnut region.

The small boat fleet, racing on the NS-SOL-13A course, was made up of a majority was made of of five Bandit IFs. Two Quest Melges-24s, two TMS Nacra 17s, a TMS Laser One, a Shields Class, a TMS Flying Shadow, and a Dolphin Moth made up the remainder of the fleet. The fleet started quick as more than half got across the start line before 20 seconds had ticked off on the race clock. Beane was first across, in her Melges-24, at 00:00:01, while I followed right behind, in my Dolphin Moth, at 00:00:02. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was right on my stern, crossing at 00:00:03. Dess, in her Flying Shadow, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:08 followed by Lalia, in her Nacra 17, and Lucy, in her Melges-24, both at 00:00:09. Neil, in his Bandit IF, crossed the start line next at 00:00:16 followed by Peter, in his Laser One, at 00:00:19. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, was across next the start line at 00:00:25 with Alexandre, in his Bandit IF, crossing the start line right after at 00:00:38. Luna, in her Shields Class, crossed the start line next at 00:00:41 with Susi, in her Bandit IF, following right behind at 00:00:42. Cole, in her Nacra 17, had some problems on her pre-start but corrected and crossed the start line at 00:01:31. I quickly jumped out in front of the fleet, in my speedy Dolphin Moth, as Lalia, in her Nacra 17, Lucy, in her Melges-24, and Beane, in her Melges-24, tightly fought for position between each other. Peter, in his Laser One, settled in behind them with Luna, in her Shields Class, following along not far behind. Cole, in her Nacra 17, proceeded to make her way up from the rear of the fleet, in her speedier Nacra 17, passing seven along the way. Alexandre and Carlota, both in Bandit IFs, caught up to Jackson, as he fell back from the speedier boats, in his Bandit IF, and fought tightly for position. Neil, in his Bandit IF, was not far behind them with Susi, in her Bandit IF, right behind. Unfortunately Dess, in her Flying Shadow, crashed and recorded a DNF. I maintained the lead ahead of the fleet and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Lalia was next across the finish line, followed right away by Lucy and Beane, who were neck and neck. Peter was next to cross the finish with Luna, Cole, Alexandre, Carlota, Jackson, Neil and Susi following.

The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a majority of three Wildwind RC-44s. Two TMS Ushuaias, a TMS One Design 65, a Trudeau 12 Metre, and an ACA33 made up the remainder of the fleet. The entire fleet got off to a great quick start with the last boat crossing the start line as 34 seconds ticked on the race timer. Cole, in her ACA33, was across the start line first, at 00:00:03 followed by Dess, in her RC-44, at 00:00:04. Bean, in her One Design 65, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:09 followed by Susi, in her Ushuaia, and Lucy, in her RC-44, both at 00:00:14. Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, was next across the start line at 00:00:16. I was next across, in my Ushuaia, at 00:00:21 followed by Luna, in her RC-44, at 00:00:34. Beane, in her speedier One Design 65, jumped out front to lead the pack with Dess, in her RC-44, and Cole, in her ACA33, falling in right behind her. Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, settled in just ahead of the middle of the fleet, as Susi and I, both in Ushuaias, held tightly right behind. Unfortunately both Lucy and Luna, in RC-44s, crashed and recorded DNFs. Beane held her lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Dess crossed the finish line second with Cole coming across third, right behind her. Peter was next to cross the finish line followed by myself and then Susi.

Bandit Regatta – November 21st 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta saw some excellent sim weather with a nice turnout. The sims behaved marvelously as everyone in the fleet finished both races with no crashes or DNFs. We also had another great turnout of spectators to witness some exciting sailing at the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, along the shore in Eden Albatros, at the committee boat dock in Breadnut, and on the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus. This weeks fleet was also an all Bandit IF affair, with six boats turning up for the regatta.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, saw the entire fleet get off to a quick start as everyone was across the start line in 23 seconds. Jackson started things off, crossing the start line at 00:00:04 with Alexandre crossing just a second behind him at 00:00:05. Carlota was next to cross at 00:00:09 with Chris following her at 00:00:20. Stu was next to cross at 00:00:22 with Neil just on his stern at 00:00:23. Jackson’s short lead at the start would not hold as Alexandre and Carlota both overtook him on the first leg along the way to the southern tip of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. As Alexandre and Carlota both rounded the southern tip of Lighthouse Isle, the remainder of the fleet settled in for the rest of the course as Jackson, Chris, Stu, and Neil all followed one by one. Alexandre held his lead until the finish, crossing first and claiming line honors with Carlota crossing just behind him. Jackson was next to finish followed by Chis, Stu, and Neil.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course, saw Jackson once again get off to a great start as he crossed the start line at 00:00:02. Carlota and Stu were next across the start line as they both crossed at 00:00:11. Alexandre followed, crossing the start line at 00:00:21 with Neil crossing just behind him at 00:00:28. Chris was next to cross the start line at 00:01:25. Jackson held his lead going into the first mark, the southern tip of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, while Alexandre overtook Carlota to take up second with Stu, Neil, and Chris not far behind. Jackson’s lead would not hold with Alexandre overtaking him on the third leg from the island in Sloe to Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus. Alexandre would hold his lead until the finish and also claim line honors once again, with Jackson holding on to cross the finish line in second. Carlota was just on Jackson’s stern as she crossed the finish 4 seconds after him in third. Stu was next to finish followed by Neil and Chris.

Trudeau Patch II Class Racing – Nov 17th 2016

This weeks North Sea Thursday Regatta, raced as a Trudeau Patchogue II class race, saw a great turnout. Nine sailors turned out to make an impressive cat boat fleet. The sims were a bit choppy during the first race but smoothed out for the second, as no DNF’s were recorded in that one.

The first race, on the NS-1b course, saw the fleet get off to a great start as half the fleet was across the start line in under 30 seconds. We did have some choppyness in this race as Joshua’s boat stopped responding to input forcing him to record a DNF and Trey and Dess both crashed, causing DNF’s as well.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course, saw much smoother sim weather and another great fleet start. The entire fleet was across the start line in under 40 seconds, considering the Patchogue II’s slower speeds this was quite amazing.

North Sea Open Regatta – November 16th 2016

Another week and another record breaking fleet turnout for the North Sea Open Regatta. We had 19 initially show up to race for the small boats portion but 17 actually crossed the line for the start which breaks the fleet record, yet again. We also found out how to push the race line to it’s limits. We had a great spectator turn out as well, in the usual places on the Poseidon Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, along the shore in Eden Albatros, on the committee boat dock in Breadnut, and along the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in Ziziphus. The sims themselves behaved well with some great sim weather considering the beating we gave them in the first race.

The small boat race, a three lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, saw a great turnout with a majority of seven Bandit IFs. The remainder of the fleet was made up of three Quest Melges-24s, two Nacra 17s, two Shields Class, a Dolphin Moth, a The Mesh Shop Flying Shadow, and a Laser One. This is the race that pushed the race line to it’s limits as it ran out of memory as half the fleet crossed for the second lap. We were still able to provide race results as the line announced the crossing themselves correctly with time stamps.

The big boat portion, raced on the North Sea Copacabana course, saw the fleet made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop Ushuaias. The remainder of the fleet was comprised of three Wildwind RC-44s, two The Mesh Shop One Design 65s, and a ACA33. The sims continued to be well behaved fort his race as we had no crashed or DNF’s recorded.

Note: The Mesh Shop has released an update to the Flying Shadow bringing it to version 2.0. Please message Dutch (kain.xenobuilder) to receive your updated Flying Shadow. As the update fixed a speed bug, we are updating the handicap rating for it. If you would like to help, please run a time on the North Sea Olympic Course (Long), record the race line output into a notecard and drop it on either Petra or I.

AS they all had duplicate finished in each race, a DNF in the small boats and DNS in the big boats, neither A8.1 or A8.2 will break their tie. Therefore, they remain tied in 15th place overall.

 

Bandit Regatta – November 14th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta was an all Bandit IF affair with some great sim weather. The sims were well behaved as we had no DNFs recorded due to crashes. The only DNF was actually due to a script failure in Stu’s IF. We also saw the entire fleet made up of bandit IFs, which makes my post slightly easier with no handicapping needed. This week was also our monthly ‘There and Back Again’ using both race lines in The North Sea. The spectator turn out was again large as people gathered in the usual spots at the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin Region, along the shore in the Eden Albatros region, along the beaches on Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, at the committee boat docks in both the Breadnut and Eden Auks regions, as well as the Robbins Reef Lighthouse in the Eden Auk region.

The first race, the ‘There’ portion on the North Sea Breadnut to Eden Auk course, saw a great exciting start as half the fleet crossed the start line in less than ten seconds. Alexandra was first across at 00:00:04 with Stu, with Kate, right on his stern at 00:00:05. Jackson was next to cross at 00:00:07 with Carlota following in tow at 00:00:09. Neil was next across at 00:00:21 followed by Ray, with Arwen, at 00:00:32. Susi got herself a bit caught up on her turn to the line in the pre-start but recovered well and crossed the line at 00:01:14. The lead pack of the fleet, consisting of Alexandre, Jackson, Stu with Kate, and Carlota stayed tight up until the first mark, south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. Stu’s boat had a script error and he wound up recording a DNF as it stopped responding to any input at the first mark. Carlota made her move at that mark as she passed both Jackson and Alexandre to take the lead. Alexandre and Jackson stayed right on her stern though. As Neil approached the first mark he went to high and wound up following the string back to re-round the mark properly. Ray, with Arwen, took advantage and passed Neil as he rounded the mark. Susi held up the rear of the fleet but still was making good time. Carlota’s lead never faltered as she crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Alexandre was right in tow, crossing second as Jackson crossed just behind in third. Ray, with Arwen, followed along next, crossing fourth followed by Neil crossing fifth and Susi crossing sixth.

The second race, the ‘and Back Again’ portion on the North Sea Eden Auk to Breadnut course, saw a challenging start as the wind changed to 135° from the 225° from the first race. Alexandre got things started as he crossed the line first at 00:00:04 followed by Carlota at 00:00:15. Susi, who’s been working her fingers off practicing her starts, followed at 00:00:25 with Jackson in tow at 00:00:30. Neil was next to cross at 00:00:39 followed by Ray, with Arwen, at 00:00:48. Alexandre immediately went to a port tack after the committee boat, heading south down through the Genip region and into Cocoa region where he tacked east to the first mark in the Zizphus region, south of Lighthouse Isle. Carlota took the more traditional route out of the start, staying on a starboard tack heading east into the Eden Albatros region where she tacked south to head to the first mark. Susi took a chance and followed Alexandre’s course on a port tack south were she actually caught up to and passed Alexandre before they both tacked east to the first mark. The rest of the fleet followed Carlota’s lead and stayed on a starboard tack east before tacking south in Eden Albatros. As Carlota rounded the first mark, with a growing lead, Jackson was not far off in tow, with Neil just behind. Susi held her position just ahead of Alexandre as they both rounded the first mark all the way up to the second mark. Susi faltered slightly after rounding the second mark and Alexandre made his move, passing her and not looking back. Ray, with Arwen, was just to the stern of Susi and catching up. Carlota wound up repeating her position from the first race as she crossed the finish first and took line honors again. Jackson followed along in second with Neil crossing third. Alexandre crossed the finish fourth as Susi and Ray made a dash for the finish, with Susi crossing fifth and Ray, with Arwen, crossing sixth.

North Sea Open Regatta – November 9th 2016

Smooth sim weather and another great turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The sims behaved well as we only had one DNF registered for the entire regatta. The turnout was another record breaking one with 16 in the small boat fleet.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit IFs. Three Flying Shadows, a Patchogue II, a Trudeau One, a Nacra 17, a Ktaba 20 MX Teleri, a Melges-24, a Laser One, and a Shields Class made up the remainder of the small boat fleet.

This weeks big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a split majority of two The Mesh Shop Ushuaias and two ACA33s. A Trudeau 12 Metre, a Wildwind AC45, a The Mesh Shop One Design 65, a Bandit 50, and a Wildwind RC-44 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Bandit Regatta – November 7th 2016

We had some outstanding sim weather for this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The races were well attended as we had 10 Bandit boats show up for the fleet. We also had a packed dock of spectators at the committee boat in the Breadnut region as well as crowds on the shore in the Eden Alabtros region, on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region, and on Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. There were no DNFs in either race as the sims behaved magnificently. This weeks fleet was made up of a majority of nine Bandit IFs with one lone Bandit 60, for the first race. Susi switched from her Bandit IF to her Bandit 60 in the second race. We are also seeing the fruits of our newest sailors practicing their pre-start routines as the start times are dramatically improving in each race.

The first race, a three lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, saw an excellent start as more than half the fleet got underway in under 30 seconds. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, got things started at 00:00:05, with Ultra, in his Bandit IF, in tow at 00:00:08. Stu, in his Bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:12 with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, following at 00:00:13. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was next across at 00:00:23 followed by Neil, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:29. Kurt, in his Bandit IF with Asami, crossed next at 00:00:38 followed by Susi, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:42. Ray, in his Bandit IF with Arwen, was next across at 00:00:55 followed by Try, in his Bandit IF with Ali, who actually got disconnected in the pre-start area only to come back and sail the race, at 00:06:22. Over the course of three laps, Carlota, in her Bandit IF, held her own at the front of the fleet. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, fell behind slightly as Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, made some moves and took advantage of Stu, in his Bandit IF, falling back, to settle in behind Carlota. Kurt, in his Bandit IF with Asami, settles in right behind Ultra with Neil, in his Bandit IF, holding his position in the middle of the fleet just behind Stu. Ray, in his Bandit IF with Arwen, started off sailing too far south as he had the wrong course loaded in his Ultimate Sailor Buddy HUD, however he corrected and actually moved up in position to settle in behind Neil. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, actually disconnected in the middle of the Carob region on the third lap, but logged back and got back in his boat to finish sailing the race right behind Ray. Susi, in her Bandit IF, held her own near the rear, as Try, in his Bandit IF with Ali, steadily followed along. Carlota was the first to finish and take line honors, followed by Cranston with Shaylin, Ultra, Kurt with Asami, Stu, Neil, Ray with Arwen, Jackson, Susi, and Trey with Ali.

The second race, sailed on the North Sea World Cup Reach (NS-WC Rch) course, saw another great start as three quarters of the fleet got underway in about 30 seconds. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, saw a excellent start, crossing at 00:00:02. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was next to cross at 00:00:04 followed by Neil, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:09. Stu, in his Bandit IF, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:11 followed by Carlota, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:25. Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, was across the start line next at 00:00:30 with Ray, in his Bandit IF with Arwen, following at 00:00:33. Trey, in his Bandit IF with Ali, was next across at 00:01:45 followed by Susi, who had switched to her Bandit 60 from her Bandit IF for this race, at 00:03:10. Ultra, in his Bandit IF, capitalized on his great start and led the fleet for the whole course, with Jackson, in his Bandit IF, following closely on his stern. Neil, in his Bandit IF, had trouble near the first mark, south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, and fell back to the rear of the fleet just ahead of Susi, in her Bandit 60. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, made some moves and passed Stu, in his Bandit IF, to fall in behind Jackson. Cranson, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, settled in behind Stu. Ray, in his Bandit IF, with Arwen, paced himself just on Cranston’s stern. Trey, in his Bandit IF with Ali, followed along just ahead of Neil and Susi. Ultra crossed the finish line first and took line honors followed by Jackson, who was just 19 seconds behind. Carlota was next to cross the finish line followed by Stu, Cranston with Shaylin, Ray with Arwen, Trey with Ali, Neil and then Susi.

North Sea Open Regatta – November 2nd 2016

The small boat fleet gets under way during the North Sea Open Regatta, on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016.

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta saw fair sim weather, a great turnout, and even some new racers. The sims behaved well as only one DNF was recorded in each portion of the regatta. The turn out was again large as the small boat fleet was 15 boats strong. We also welcome Ali to racing in SL and in the North Sea as a new racer, along with Trey, who started racing with us last week.

The small boat fleet, racing on the NS-SOL-13A course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs. Three Shields Class, two Wildwind RC-44s (which were allowed to race as an exception), a Nacra 17, a Melges-24, and a Kataba MX 20 Teleri made up the remainder of the small boat fleet.

The big boat fleet, racing on the NS-1b course, was made up of a majority of four Wildwind RC-44s. Three TMS Ushuaias, two ACA33s, and a Rene Marine RM30 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Race Note:
Trey (Trayla Parx) and Ali (Alica Weezles), being new racers, were allowed an exception to race their RC-44s, a big boat, in the small boat portion of the regatta. As they both raced with identical race ids, the start line only recorded the first instance of that ID to cross both times*. As such, we were not able to capture Trey’s starting time for the small boat race. However, he did finish with a DNF in the small boat race and receives those points. We were able to capture Trey’s and Ali’s full times for the big boat race.
*You must race with a unique race ID (e.g. not used by anyone else) to have the start line capture your times.
