Trudeau Classic Regatta – June 30th 2016

This weeks North Sea Trudeau Classic Regatta featured some changing winds and some really fun sailing. We had only one crash this week as well, in the second race with Kristaly recording a DNF due to it. The weather was slightly gusty during the first race with a 15 knot wind that picked up to 24 knots during the second as a storm rolled through. This weeks fleet was nicely mixed again with a split majority of Francois Jacques and Patchogue II’s at two a piece. The remainder of the fleet was made up of one T-12 and one 12 Metre.

The first race, on North Sea Manta, saw a gusty wind of 15 knots. The fleet started well with a clean start, and spread out towards the end of the first leg around the green buoy in Ziziphus. Kristaly’s Francoise Jacques and Jamie’s 12 Metre were in the lead followed by Josh’s and my Patchogue II. Asami’s Francois jacques was next with Sue’s T-12 coming up from behind. The order stayed fairly the same as the entire fleet finished the race.

The weather changed for the second race, on North Sea Extreme, with the wind picking up to 24 knots. Once again, the fleet had a clean start with my Patchogue slipping across first. The front of the fleet stayed pretty tight with Kristaly’s Francois Jacques, Jamie’s 12 Metre, and Josh’s and my Patchogue II’s not really getting a deciding lead among each other as positions continuously changed until the third leg when the Patch’s were able to pull their centerboards and surf past the 12 Metre and Francois Jacques at 18 knots. Everyone bunched up again, however, when they hit the green buoy in Nectarine for the start of the fourth leg. By the time the head of the fleet hit the blue buoy in Sapote for the start of the seventh leg, the Patchogue’s were out in front for good. Josh ultimately took line honors in what was a really exciting and fast race.

North Sea Open Regatta – June 29th 2016

Nice sized fleets and stable sims turning slightly turbulent featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. We had a great turnout for both small boat and big boat races. This weeks small boat fleet saw a majority of Nacra 17’s, with four. The remainder of the small boat fleet was made up of three Melges-24’s, a Shields Class, a Flying Shadow, a Trudeau T-12, and a Dolphin Moth. The big boat fleet, almost as large as the small boat fleet with 10 boats, was nicely mixed among boat types. The majority was split among One Design 65’s, Ushuaia’s, Trudeau 12 Metre’s, and Francois Jacques’s at 2 a piece. The remainder of the big boat fleet was made up of an AC45, and an Open 60. The first race saw great sim weather with everyone finishing, however things turned in the second with 4 DNF’s recorded due to crashes. We would also like to welcome Phil, who Lucy brought along to compete in his first North Sea races.

The small boat race, on the North Sea Circle course, started off well with a great clean start. The fleet spread out across the North Sea with my Dolphin Moth clearing the way and the Nacra’s and lone Flying Shadow in hot pursuit. The Melges-24 pack of Beane, Lucy and Makhnos followed close behind. The Shields Class and T-12 followed up in the rear of the fleet. At the finish, Arya’s Nacra 17 and Viv’s Flying Shadow finished within 8 seconds of each other highlighting some exciting racing between the two. Sue wound up getting a bit lost on the first leg but still recovered to finish the race.

The big boat race, on the North Sea Manta course, also started off well with another great clean start. Viv’s AC45 took off like rocket and lead most of the race, with Beane’s One Design 65 not too far behind. The rest of the fleet was nicely mixed in spacing and positions among 12 Metre’s, Ushuaia’s and the Francois Jacques. Unfortunately, the sims turned choppy and four DNF’s were recorded, with an Ushuaia, One Design 65, Open 60, and Francoise Jacques succumbing to crashes.

Note: The handicaps for the Trudeau T-12 and Leetle Cat II have been revised to 0.59 (old 0.48) and 0.50 (old 0.49), respectively.

Bandit Regatta – June 27th 2016

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta featured some great sailing sim weather. We had a light turnout this week, with Red having to bow out right before the start for RL and also Francis, a new sailor, following the fleet to learn instead of actively racing. The region’s themselves were in great shape as we had no crashes in either race. This weeks fleet was comprised of two Bandit 60’s and one Bandit 55 in the first race and two bandit 60’s and one Bandit IF in the second race as Rulette switched from her Bandit 55.

The first race, on NS-SOL-13A, saw some great big boat racing across the North Sea, as the fleet stayed close until Ru’s Bandit 55 started to out distance the fleet around the island in Ziziphus. Rulette continued her quick pace past the island in Genip, with Stu and Katana sailing neck and neck until the finish.

The second race, on NS-SOL-13B, had Rulette switching out her Bandit 55 for her Bandit IF. Stu and Katana remained in their Bandit 60’s. Racing was close as the fleet kept within a tight radius of each other up to the island in Zizphus. Stu started to gain a lead as Rulette and Katana stayed close around the island in Sloe up to Ziziphus again. Stu wound up taking line honors with Katana and Rulette not far behind.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – June 23rd 2016

A small turn out yet nicely mixed fleet featured in this weeks North Sea Trudeau Classic Regatta. A Patchogue II, T-12, Trudeau One, HepCat, and a Francois Jacques were on display in a nicely mixed fleet. Racing was fun and spread out due to each boat’s different handicaps. The first race was run on North Sea Trapezoid and the second race on North Sea Manta, recently created by our RD Julia.

North Sea Open Regatta – June 22nd 2016

Touchy seas turning even more stormy featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Conditions were laggy for the small boats and then turned stormy for the big boats as only four of the nine large fleet finished. However, with all the turbulence, we still saw some exciting racing among a large turnout of Nacra 17’s, and the big boat sailors who stuck it out.

The small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Long, featured a majority of Nacra 17’s with four, some evening running crewed. The remainder of the fleet was comprised of three Bandit IF’s, two Melges-24’s, two Flying Shadows, and a Dolphin Moth. Viv and Joshua, with Tess as crew, showcased some exciting close racing on their Flying Shadows. Arya, Cole, and Katana, also displayed some thrilling sailing on their Nacra 17’s.

The big boat fleet, racing on the new North Sea Manta designed by Julia, was made up of a majority of OD-65’s with four. Two AC45’s, two Ushuaia’s, and an Open 60 made up the remainder of the fleet. The seas turned stormy in during this race with a majority of the fleet recording DNF’s. However, ViV, on her AC-45, and Beane on her OD-65 still made a show of it with some exciting racing.

Bandit Regatta – June 20th 2016

This weeks North Sea bandit Regatta saw some stormy sim weather along with some great big boat racing. The sims started to act pesky towards the end of the first race, and in the second one sim completely revolted and crashed everyone who entered. Some were able to get back in, with Rulette and Alexandre finding their boats. Alexandre’s boat scripts were out of order from the crash but Rulette was able to sail on to the finish. This weeks fleet was made up of three Bandit 60’s, two Bandit IF’s, and a Bandit 55.

The first race, on NS-WC Rch, saw a really great clean start, with everyone getting over the line quickly. Alexandre and Rulette wound up being neck and neck for most of the race. Rulette ultimately took line honors.

The second race, on our new course North Sea manta (created by Julia), saw another great start and some close sailing at the beginning of the race among the fleet. Again, Alexandre and Rulette pulled out ahead, in their Bandit IF and Bandit 55 respectively, leading the fleet. Then disaster struck. The sim crossing from Bilberry into Eldeberry, along the courses 4th leg, crashed every sailor who try the crossing. Alexandre and Rulette were able to get back in quickly and find their boats, which did correctly pass the 4th mark in Sloe. However, Alexandre’s boat, as mentioned above, wouldn’t sail properly and he took a DNF. Rulette went on to again take line honors and finish the race.

Trudeau 12 Metre Handicap – Exploits

We have raised the handicap of the Trudeau 12 Metre to 0.76 up from 0.69.

This is due to a number of exploits being used by more sailors and thus the overall times of the boat rising quite dramatically. On the North Sea Olympic course, the average time for the Trudeau 12m 6 months ago was around 18 min, now it is 14 min.

An exploit is usually a design fault that allows the boat to go faster under certain circumstances. They exist in RL sometimes. Is it cheating or not to exploit an exploit, some say yes, but we consider it not cheating, it is a design flaw that has been found to usually increase speed. In SL, cheating is carrying a pocket wind-setter or using an auto trimmer or autopilot of sorts illegally and other things like this..

When an exploit is found, often it is reported to the builder, and most times the builder fixes the problem. In the meantime, we are raising the handicap of the boat to allow for their use.

One sailor I know has stopped sailing the boat due to these exploits being used, another has stopped racing with the boat. It is crazy to see the boom parallel to the boat when running. This is not what the boat was designed for and not in the spirit of racing.

Until these exploits are fixed, they need to be made public, so everyone has the same chance. So we list them here.

• Running with the boom Parallel to the boat and spinnaker up. Increase of around 1 kts.
• When sailing with crew, both skipper and crew hike to the leeward side of the boat. Increase of 2 kts.
• When beating solo, skipper hikes to the center of the boat. Increase in speed.
• When on a reach solo, skipper hikes one position to leeward. Increase in speed.
• When beating, head upwind, then drop to 30° AWA. This results in an increase of speed.

Trudeau Classic Regatta – June 16th 2016

This weeks Trudeau Classic Regatta, in The North Sea, featured some close 12 Metre racing along with a decent turn out. The fleet for the first race, on North Sea Olympic Long, was almost entirely 12 Metre’s, with five, except for one lone T12 making up the remainder. The second race, on the newly created North Sea Manta, substituted a New York 30, and added a Patchogue II, for a fleet of seven. Racing was close among the 12 Metre’s up front in both races.

This week we also recalculated the handicap for the 12 Metre, now at 0.76 up from 0.69. You can see our North Sea Handicap table here. Over the course of a year of racing the 12 Metre, people have discovered how to sail it faster. Petra will have a post tomorrow with more on this.

North Sea Open Regatta – June 15th 2016

Absolutely great sim weather highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. We didn’t have a single DNF or crash in either race this week. We also had no protests with some great clean sailing on display.

This weeks small boat fleet was made up of a split majority of Melges-24’s and Nacra 17’s with three a piece. The remainder of the fleet contained a Ktaba Teleri 20, a Shields Class, a Quest 2m, and a Dolphin Moth. This weeks small boat course was NS-SOL-13A, which is a fun favorite for the small boats. Racing was extremely competitive between the M-24’s of Lucy, Beane, and Arya, and the Nacra 17’s of Cole, Jamie, and Stu. Lucy, Beane, Cole, and Arya all finished within seconds of each other.

The big boat fleet was made up of a majority of Trudeau 12 Metre’s, with four. The remainder of the fleet was made up of two The Mesh Shop Ushuaia’s, a Trudeau New York 30, and a One Design 65. The fleet spread out on NS-1b, this weeks big boat course, with the 12 Metre’s making up the center pack. Beane took line honors in her speedy One Design 65.

Bandit Regatta – June 13th 2016

This weeks North Sea bandit Regatta saw excellent sim weather, a new sailor to the North Sea, and some exciting sailing. The week saw our monthly ‘There and Back Again’ series, racing from Breadnut to Eden Auk, then back again. The sims behaved for everyone there were no crashes in either race. The fleet this week was made up of two Bandit IF’s, a Bandit 25 and a Bandit 60. We would also like to welcome Stu who was out racing in his first North Sea races in his Bandit 60.

The first race, North Sea Breadnut to Eden Auk, saw some tight sailing between Red and Alexandre with both neck and neck for the entirety of the course. In a thrilling finish, they were both merely 2 seconds apart.

The second race, North Sea Eden Auk to Breadnut, saw some nice position changes among Red, Alexandre and Jess, in her Bandit 25 with Petra riding along as crew.

The fleet this week was made up of two Bandit IF’s, a Bandit 25 and a Bandit 60.

Race Note:
Alexandre and Red finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
