Early stormy seas and some fun racing featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. This was the first day of four continuous planned days of maintenance by LL. Although we had restarted all the North Sea estate sims previous to the race, effects of the maintenance seemed to linger as the first race saw some stormy crossings. However, sim weather cleared up for the second race as there were no crashes in the fleet. Racing was still competitive on the day with some fun sailing being showcased in both races. This weeks fleet was also an all Bandit IF affair until the second race, when a Bandit 60 got into the fray.
The first race, on the NS-CCW course, saw the fleet off to a clean nice start. Dess was across the start line first, running nearly perfectly along the green lay line, at 00:00:03. Jackson followed Dess across the start line at 00:00:10. Red was next to cross the start line at 00:00:17. Carlota, with Gabi, was across the start line next, at 00:00:34, followed by Neil, at 00:00:54. Moon was next to cross the start line at 00:01:14. Shadow, with Bob, was next across the start line at 00:05:16 followed by Anna at 00:05:45. Carlota, with Gabi, quickly made headway and passed Dess, Jackson, and Red to lead the fleet. Red was close on their stern, followed by Dess, Jackson, and Neil. Moon passed the first course marker, the blue buoy in the Sapote region, incorrectly and was disqualified for sailing the incorrect course. Shadow, with Bob, had some trouble immediately on the course side of the race line and wound up taking a DNF. Anna, sailing in her first race, trailed along at the rear of the fleet. Stormy seas struck as the fleet approached the fourth course mark, the green buoy south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, with several crashing as they traversed the Nance region. Carlota, with Gabi, who had a sizeable lead on the rest of the fleet was the first to crash. Dess, Jackson, and Anna would succumb to crashes there, all resulting in DNFs. Red and Neil made it through unscathed as they both raced to the finish on the final two legs of the course. Red picked up a lead at this point and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors with Neil crossing the finish line second.
The second race, on the NS-SOL-13C course, saw smoother sim weather and a Bandit 60 enter the fleet. Dess, in her Bandit IF, once again got things going as she crossed the start line at 00:00:04. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, was following right along, just as in the first race, crossing the start line at 00:00:11. Moon, in his Bandit IF, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:15, followed by Red, at 00:00:20, and Neil, at 00:00:35, both in Bandit IFs. Louise, with Njeri in her Bandit 60, was next to cross the start line at 00:01:29 followed by Anna, in her Bandit IF, at 00:01:33. Jackson, in his Bandit IF, did not let Dess’s lead, in her Bandit IF, last long as he made a move to pass her on the first leg with Red, in her Bandit IF, following in tow right behind him. Neil, in his Bandit IF, also made a move to pass Dess on the first leg, placing Dess in the middle of the pack. Moon, in his Bandit IF, also fell back as he settled in behind Dess. Louise, with Njeri in her Bandit 60, followed up in the rear of the fleet. Anna ran into some trouble with her boat immediately on the course side of the start line, circled back into the pre-start area, and abandoned the race, taking a DNF. Jackson’s lead held as he crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Red crossed the finish line second followed by Niel, Dess, Moon, and Lousie with Njeri.

Today’s winner was Red (RedHeadJO Resident), with Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) second, and Neil (eager2discover Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and the SLCG for helping with race duties.
Race Note:
As the first race was entirely one boat class, the results for that race are presented in class format. Subsequently, the second race contained more than one boat class and is presented in handicapped format.
Moon () was unfortunately disqualified (DSQ) from the first race for sailing the incorrect course.
Anna (AnnaLegusta Resident) and Lousie (Huata Resident) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
AnnaLegusta Resident | 3 | 7 |
Huata Resident | 4 | 6 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Anna’s favor with having a three point finish over Louise’s four point finish as her best.
