This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in winter, but then turned into a stormy afternoon in the tropical Fruit Islands leaving the majority of the skippers on the rocks. This time we had a fleet of nine Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the eleven Bandit IFs sailed with crew.

After the start of the first race, we had a compact fleet until the first victims reported. This also caused the fleet to fall apart quickly. During the start of the second race, two groups of three boats already formed. Because of this we quickly had a stretched fleet. However, a second storm would lift, causing a number of skippers to end up on the rocks.

We had eight DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Race Notes:
Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), Max (Maximiliano Szondi) and Cate (Cate Sewell) all finished tied with 12 points. As they all have the exact same finishes, finishing with a fifth point finish during the first race and a seventh point finish during the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Julie, Max and Cate remain tied in sixth place overall.

Smooth seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The North Sea regions were calm and smooth as only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, both attributed to skippers crashing on region corners. The crowd that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the frisky fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Double Loop and North Sea Extreme courses, was made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, two sailing with crew and three sailing single-handed respectively. Two Wildwind AC-45s, and one TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Committee boat: Daenerys, Tamarushka

This past Thursday was the last in January, but already the fourth Thursday Triple Threat of 2021. With good sail coming from the south west again The North Sea regions behaved well, but we had a thundercloud near the finish line at the end of the first race. Today we had five Bandit 22 LTEs, four Bandit IFs, and five Star Class on the starting line. A Bandit IF and a Star had crew on board

We had two great races. In both competitions the boats were quite quickly far apart. However, here and there we had small packs of boats.

Today in the second race, we had a skipper who had not set his race wind. As a result, the start line did not see his boat and both start and finish times were not recorded. Because he did not have the racing wind from the RD, he sailed for nothing. I also see that different skippers, and usually the same ones, have their racing wind very late. Sometimes we have to warn them just before the start that they have no racing wind yet. Come to the start line on time, so you can’t forget anything. Today or tomorrow someone stays at the line because I start the races.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and two DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for finishing under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director due to a Rule 11 On The Same Tack, Overlapped foul at the start (colloquially known as barging).

11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.

Max (Maximiliano Szondi) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for sailing an incorrect course, rounding the white buoy in the Soncoya region, the third course mark, clockwise instead of counter-clockwise.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Gabby (Gavin Felisimo) both finished tied with 8 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, finishing with a four point finish during the first race and a four point finish during the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Rugger and Gabby remain tied in fourth place overall.

Jack (Jacquimo Resident) and Juicy (juice651 Resident) both finished tied with 6 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, finishing with a third point finish during the first race and a third point finish during the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Jack and Juicy remain tied in third place overall.

Moon (moonglownight Residentt) and Ian (IanPixel Resident) finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Viv ( vivipezz Resident),  Max (Maximiliano Szondi), and Amy (Montserrat Naidoo) all finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Maximiliano Szondi 3 5
Montserrat Naidoo 4 4

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Viv’s and Max’s favor with having third place finishes over Amy’s fourth place finish as her best. As Viv and Max both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Slightly choppy seas, with another great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were behaved for most as five DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, two during the small boat portion and three during the big boat portion respectively. Two of the DNFs were due to skippers hitting region corners, with another two due to skippers crashing on region crossings. The final DNF was due to a skipper pulling her boat during the small boat portion. The crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on some exciting fleet racing from this weeks skippers in both portions of the regatta.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta Reverse course, was comprised of a triple split majority of four Bandit 22 LTEs, four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, and four TMS Flying Shadows. One Bandit IF, one Shields Class, one Quest M-24, and one Dolphin Moth rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was comprised of a majority of eight TMS I-Mocca 60s. Two WildWind Open 60s, one TMS One Design 65, and one Wildwind AC-45 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Please note: As of the publishing of this post, the current handicap for the recently released TMS I-Mocca 60 now stands at 0.86. Please see our North Sea Handicap Table for more info and a link to the Google Sheet used to calculate our handicaps.

Race Notes:
Sea (filax Carter) and Cole (Colette Verino) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:13:09. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
filax 478 1.65 788.70
Colette 781 1.01 788.81

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Sea’s favor with having a 788.70 seconds finish over Cole’s 788.81 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Cole (Colette Verino) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) both finished tied with 19 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Colette Verino 5 14
Sirius Rosca 9 10

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Cole’s favor with having a fifth place finish over Sirius’s ninth place finish as his best.

Meli (Melisa Seiling) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) finished tied with 27 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, DNFs (Did Not Finish) in each portion of the regatta, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Meli and Kim both remain tied in fifteenth place overall.

Kristaly (kristaly Resident) and Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) finished tied with 28 points. As they both have the exact same finishes, a DNF (Did Not Finish) during the small boat portion and a DNS (Did Not Start) during the big boat portion respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Kristaly and Jackson both remain tied in sixteenth place overall.

A beautiful Thursday afternoon in January, already the third Thursday Triple Threat of 2021 with a nice wind again coming from the south-west and no thunderstorm in the air. Today we had seven Bandit 22 LTEs and six Star Class on the starting line.

We had two great races with a compact fleet until quite long after the start.

Today we will also talk about something else. Since today “The Circle of the Dragon” consists of a ring of fire 🙂

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Excellent seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were well behaved for all as no crashes, or DNFs (Did Not Finish) occurred. The crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, took in some great fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This also marked the first Open Regatta appearance for the new The Mesh Shop (TMS) I-Mocca 60, released an hour before the start of the regatta, and bringing with it a handicap 0.761.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Olympic Mirror course, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Two TMS Flying Shadows, one TMS Star Class, one Bandit 25r, one Dolphin Moth, one Shields Class, and one Quest M-24 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of five WildWind Open 60s. Two TMS One Design 65s, one TMS I-Mocca 60, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one Quest IACC, one ACA33, one WildWind AC-45, and one WildWind RC-44r rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

1With the new I-Mocca 60 handicap also comes the North Sea Standard Yearly Adjustment. All handicaps in today’s regatta are from the new adjustment. The improvements Linden Research™ has made to the backend of Secondlife™ have paid off for sailing in SL™ as the North Sea Standard is now at 0:10:33, down from last years 0:10:40. The largest influence on the faster times are from the drastically improved region crossing times from new region crossing code along with SL’s move to Amazon servers. North Sea Olympic Course (Long), the course the North Sea Standard is based on, was used 39 times in 2020, with the winning time of each race added to the data the standard is based on. From those 39 races, 410 finishing times were used to help update the handicap values of more than 40 boats in our table. For more info, as well as a link to the Google Sheet used to calculate everything, please see North Sea Handicap Table.

Choppy to calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were choppy during the first race as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded. Two DNFs were a result of skippers crashing on a region crossing, with another due to a skipper crashing to desktop in the middle of a region, and the final DNF was the result of a skipper crashing on region corners. The seas calmed for the second race as every skipper finished. The crowd that gathered on the small race dock, and Poseidong Centre Spectator pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, reveled in some exiciting fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Half Mane and North Sea Half Mane Mirror courses, was made up of a majority of nine Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, and two Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.
