A great fleet and spectator turnout, with some choppy sim sailing weather, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The regions of the North Sea were a bit stormy as five DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded during the small boat portion of the Regatta, among a fleet of 16 boats. All five of those DNFs were attributed to crashes from region crossings. The weather did calm down as only two of the three DNFs recorded during the big boat portion, among a fleet of 10 boats, were due to crashes. Despite the conditions early on, both fleets still displayed some great racing for the large crowd on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Lapwing region.

The small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Manta Reverse course, was comprised of a majority of eight The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, five single-handed and three crewed respectively. Five Bandit 25Rs, two TMS nacra 17s, and a lone Shields Class made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Extreme course, was comprised of a split majority of three TMS One Design 65s and three TMS Volvo Open 70s. One Wildwind AC-45, one ACA33, one Bandit 50/3, and one TMS Ushuaia made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Race Director: Cryptic
Wind: SW (225°) 18kts

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident), with Bianca (TgBianca Resident) second, and Cole (Colette Verino) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Cole (Colette Verino) and UL (ultramantra Resident) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Colette Verino 4 6
ultramantra Resident 5 5

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Cole’s favor with having a fourth place finish over UL’s fifth place finish as his best.

ViV (Colette Verino) and Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) both finished tied with 18 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
vivipezz Resident 1 17
JulieRoyale Resident 7 11

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in ViV’s favor with having a first place finish over Julie’s seventh place finish as her best.

Anne (lordje2000 Resident) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) finished tied with 19 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
lordje2000 Resident 11 8
Maximiliano Szondi 8 11

In the last race, Anne breaks the tie with Max with her eight point finish over Max’s eleven point finish.

Isa (isab DeCuir) and Nihiwatu (Nihiwatu Resident) finished tied with 20 points. As they both finished with the exact same finishes, a DNF in both small and big boat portions of the regatta respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will break their tie. Therefore, they remained tied in thirteenth place overall.

Gabriela (Gabriela Ketterley) and Reni (SerenityAeon Resident) finished tied with 22 points. As they both finished with the exact same finishes, a DNF in the small boat portion and DNS in the big boat portion respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will break their tie. Therefore, they remained tied in fifteenth place overall.
