North Sea Open Regatta – March 22nd 2023

Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally well behaved as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. One DNF, recorded during the small boat portion, was from a skipper having computer issues causing a reboot in the middle of the race. The remaining two DNFs, also recorded during the small boat portion, were from skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, delighted in an entertaining display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. One Bandit 25R, one Quest M-24, one The Mesh Shop (TMS) Nacra 17, and one crewed TMS Star Class rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was made up of a majority of five TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS One Design 65, one TMS Volvo Open 70, and one WildWind RC-44r rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Note: As of the publication of these results, the handicap value for the Quest M-24 has been adjusted to 0.93, up from 0.92. Please see North Sea Handicap Table for our handicaps and the Google Sheet used to make those calculations.

Second Note:: With the onset of DST in the United States, Canada, and most of Mexico, SL time (PDT) is now one hour ahead. However, Europe will not be entering EU Summer Time until Sunday, March 26th. In order to facilitate that our races are still at a friendly time for our sailors, we will be running our races one SL hour later, but still at the same time GMT/CET.

Today’s winner was ViV (vivipezz Resident), with Jenna (jnx1e Resident) second, and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Cate (Cate Sewell) and Anthony (AnthonyKingston Resident) registered as a team prior to the start of the race, therefore their points are accredited together.

Sandra (Sandra Nebula) was disqualified during the big boat portion for sailing an incorrect course, missing the first course mark, the blue buoy in the Sapote Region.

Anthony Kingston (anthonykingston Resident) was disqualified during the big boat portion for sailing an incorrect course, missing the fourth course mark, sailing south of the the blue buoy in the Sapote Region instead of north of it.

Markis (Marcus Schechter) and Cate & Anthony (Cate Sewell & Anthony) both finished tied with 14 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were mostly behaved as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. One DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper deleting her boat after frustration from hitting the race dock right before the finish. The remaining two DNFs, occurring one a piece in each portion respectively, were from skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, took in a thrilling display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Triple Pink course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, one Bandit 25R, one Quest 2m, one TMS Nacra 17, and one TMS Sea Boss – Rider rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Extreme course, was made up of a small majority of two TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS Volvo Open 70, one WildWind Open 60, one WildWind RC-44r, one Isard Machichaco, and one TMS Ocean Beach rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Double Loop course, was made up of a majority of three TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS One Design 65, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one WildWind Open 60, one Trudeau 12 Metre, one Bandit 55, and one Isard Machimacho rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the small boat portion tied at the finishing line with a time of 15:18. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“

Therefore, both Rugger and Moon receive 4.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 4 and 5, added together and divided equally.

ViV (vivipezz Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the big boat portion for missing the last course mark before crossing the finish line, the orange buoy in the Eden Jakana region.

Vicky (Vicky4698 Resident) and Theresa (Resi Pfeffer) both finished tied with 22 points. As they both have the exact same finishes in each race, a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the small boat portion and a DNS (Did Not Start) for the big boat portion, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking this tie. Therefore, Vicky and Theresa remain tied in twelfth place overall.

Great sim sailing weather, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm for all as no DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, enjoyed a fun display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline course, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. One The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a majority of four TMS I-Mocca 60s. One WildWind Open 60, and one WildWind RC-44R rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were calm for most as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper’s connection dying on her late in the race. The second DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was from a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered along the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in a spirited display display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (Counter-ClockWise) course, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. As Vicky and Max both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“

Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were well behaved as one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day. The loan DNF was attributed to a skipper crashing while crossing over regions corners during the small boat portion. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, relished a thrilling display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit 22 LTEs. Three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, two sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively, one TMS Nacra 17, and one TMS Sea Boss – Rider rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (counter-clockwise) course, was made up of a majority of four TMS I-Mocca 60s. Two WildWind Open 60s, one TMS One Design 65, one WildWind RC-44r, and one TMS Ocean Beach rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Edit: The results for the big boat portion were incorrectly sorted and have been corrected, as well as the final results. The final first, second, and third place finishers still remain the same.

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the small boat portion for sailing an incorrect course, missing the last course mark, the blue buoy in the Sapote regoin.

The second DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was from another skipper pulling her boat after frustration from a misclick of her own mouse causing her boat to stop dead in its tracks. The final DNF, also occurring during the big boat portion, was from a skipper pulling her boat after a collision caused her boat to cross over region corners. The crowds that gathered at the lighthouses on the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, savored a great display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was made up of a majority of five Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Nacra 17s, Two Bandit IFs, one TMS Star Class, and one Quest M-24 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Roundabout course, was made up of a small majority of three TMS I-Mocca 60s. Two WildWind Open 60s, one TMS One Design 65, one WildWind RC-44r, and one TMS Es Paradis rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.
