Another week of calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the last Cat Fight in The North Sea for August, 2022. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, rising to 21 knots during the second race, The North Sea regions were well behaved as one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day. The lone DNF, occurring during the first race, was due to a skipper’s boat spewing script errors resulting in her pulling the boat. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in the frenetic fleet-foiled feline fury on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Double Loop and North Sea Snipe courses, was made up of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and two crewed respectively, for the first race. One skipper switched to their TMS Nacra 17 for the second race.

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), Moon (moonglownight Resident), and Max (Max Starostin) all finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Julie’s favor with having a first place finish over Moon’s, and Max’s second place finishes as their best.
As Moon and Max both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
