Calm to choppy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of The North Sea were calm throughout the first race and then turned slightly choppy during the second race, as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. One of those DNFs was due to a skippers connection dying on her during the race, with the remaining DNF due to a skipper crashing while crossing on region corners. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and on the small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the finicky fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (Counter Clockwise) and North Sea Extreme Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively. Two WildWind AC-45s, and one Trudeau HepCat rounded out the catamaran fleet during the first race. For the second race, one single-handed Flying Shadow picked up crew, and the Trudeau HepCat skipper sailed a WildWind AC-45 instead.

Today’s winner was Cole (Colette Verino), with Sin (Sinarielle Resident) second, and Daenerys (blondij Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.
Race Notes:
Daenerys (blondij Resident) and Jenna (jnx1e Resident) finished tied with 7 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
blondij Resident | 4 | 3 |
jnx1e Resident | 3 | 4 |
In the last race, Daenerys breaks the tie with Jenna with her third place finish over Jenna’s fourth place finish.
Rayz (Rayzza Rubble), Sea (filax Carter), and Palani (Palani Allen) both finished tied with 12 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
Rayzza Rubble | 5 | 7 |
filax Carter | 5 | 7 |
Palani Allen | 6 | 6 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Rayz’s and Sea’s favor with having a fifth place finishes over Palani’s sixth place finish as his best. As Rayz and Sea both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
Rayzza Rubble | 7 | 5 |
filax Carter | 5 | 7 |
In the last race, Rayz breaks the tie with Sea with his fifth place finish over Sea’s seventh place finish.
It was a lot of fun, especially seeing how many buoys we could run into. Rayz really needs to go a little wider around those.
