Calm to mild sim sailing weather, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were behaved for most as only three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, one occurring during the small boat portion and two occurring during the big boat portion respectively. The crowd that assembled on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, cheered on some great fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two Bandit 25Rs, two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one sailing with crew and one sailing single-handed respectively, one TMS Nacra 17, one Dolphin Moth, and one Trudeau Patchogue II rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a small majority of four Wildwind Open 60s. Three TMS One Design 65s, two Bandit 50/3s, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one Wildwind RC-44r, one ACA33, one Trudeau RUNA IV, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Notes:
Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) was disqualified (DSQ) during the small boat portion for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director for a Rule 11 On Same Tack, Overlapped foul at the start of the race.
“11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.“

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the small boat portion tied with a final time of 0:10:50. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)
Skipper | Race Time | Handicap | Final Time |
jnx1e | 866 | 0.75 | 649.50 |
moonglownight | 867 | 0.75 | 650.25 |
With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a 649.50 seconds finish over Moon’s 650.25 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) and Isa (isab DeCuir) both finished tied with 6 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
WWWAAAA Resident | 1 | 5 |
isab DeCuir | 2 | 4 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sandra’s favor with having a first place finish over Isa’s second place finish as his best.
Jackson (Jacquimo Resident), Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre), and Sirius(Sirius Rosca) all finished tied with 18 points.
Jacquimo Resident | 3 | 15 |
Nicole Myhre | 8 | 10 |
Sirius Rosca | 9 | 9 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jackson’s favor with having a third place finish over Zimtzicke’s eighth place, and Sirius’s ninth place finishes as their best.
