Stormy regions and a great racing turnout featured in this weeks Backwater Bay Yacht Club Open Regatta. Several of the regions in the Bingo Strait area were misbehaving during the small boats portion of the regatta, resulting in four racers claiming DNFs (Did Not Finish). As the Rodel region was likened to a bowl of soup with the lag conditions, we changed the big boat course from the published course of W1 to BBYC 09, recently created by Backwater Bay Yacht Club Race Director Daenerys, in order to avoid that region. The turnout for the regatta was great this week as the small boats fleet, racing on the BBYC 03 course, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows. Three Bandit 25rs, one Quest Melges-24, and one Bandit IF made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, racing on the aforementioned BBYC 09 course, was comprised of a majority of three TMS One Design 65s. One Wildwind RC-44r and one Wildwind Open 60 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Lucy, in her Quest Melges-24, leaves the lighthouse in the Rodel region after rounding the red buoy on the BBYC 03 course during the Backwater Bay Yacht Club Open Regatta on Wednesday, August 8th, 2018.

Today’s winner was Beane (beane Bade), with Bianca (TgBianca Resident) second, and Lucy (LucyInTheSky Afarensis) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for assisting with race duties.
Race Notes:
Bianca (TgBianca Resident) was disqualified in the big boat portion of the regatta for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a penalty turn for a Rule 13* foul committed on the course.
*Rule 13 – WHILE TACKING
“After a boat passes head to wind, she shall keep clear of other boats until she is on a close-hauled course. During that time rules 10, 11 and 12 do not apply. If two boats are subject to this rule at the same time, the one on the other’s port side or the one astern shall keep clear.“

Beane (beane Bade) and Bianca (TgBianca Resident) finished tied with 5 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
beane Bade | 4 | 1 |
TgBianca Resident | 1 | 4 |
In the last race, Beane breaks the tie with Bianca with her first place finish over Bianca’s fourth point finish.
Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Daenerys (blondij Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
moonglownight Resident | 3 | 8 |
blondij Resident | 5 | 6 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Moon’s favor with having a third place finish over Daenerys’s fifth point finish as her best.
Blair (Blair Karas), Kayo (Kayo Torii), and Astrid (AstridNewBonham Resident) all finished tied with 14 points. As they all finished with the exact same finishes, a DNF in the small boats portion and a DNS in the big boats portion, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule 8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie and they remain tied in ninth place overall.
