Ultra and Jackson highlighted some close racing, as both fought neck and neck in each race, changing positions with some clever passing at marks and using wind shadowing. This weeks fleet, racing on North Sea Copacabana and NS-SOL-13B courses, was comprised of a majority of five Bandit IFs with two Bandit 25s making up the remainder.

The sims behaved well again this week, as the DNFs (Did Not Finish) on the day were not due to anyone crashing. From the left (in boats): Bianca (Bandit 25), Rugger (Bandit IF), Red (Bandit IF), Soh (Bandit IF), and Ultra (Bandit IF).
On the dock: Nenrio, Philippe, Aeisha, Ellem, Sina, and Cryptic.

Smooth sim weather, a large spectator turn out, and exciting sailing featured in this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The sims behaved extremely well as no DNFs were recorded due to crashes in either race. Spectator turn out was also great as viewers flocked to the shore in the Eden Albatros region and along the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. The sailing itself was exciting as things got bumpy in race two but everyone recovered well. This weeks fleet was again comprised of a majority of ten Bandit IFs with one lone Bandit 25. We would also like to welcome Soh, who was racing in his first set of races in the North Sea.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, saw the racers off to a speedy start as six of the nine boats in the fleet were over the start line as 28 seconds ticked off the race clock. Jackson got things started, crossing the start line at 00:00:03. Bianca, in the lone Bandit 25, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:07. Ultra followed along next across the start line at 00:00:18. Neil was next to cross the start line at 00:00:22 followed by Red at 00:00:24 and Daenerys at 00:00:28. Soh was next across the start line at 00:00:54 followed by Alexandre at 00:01:00 and Rugger at 00:01:07. Bianca, in her quicker Bandit 25, sped to the lead in the fleet with Red making moves through the fleet and settling in behind Bianca. Daenerys followed along on Red’s stern to also move up through the fleet. Alexandre made some of his own moves to pass through to fleet, settling in right behind Daenerys. Neil took up position in the middle of the fleet with Jackson, who fell off his great start, settling in behind Neil. Ultra took up position towards the rear of the fleet, falling back from his quick start, followed by Rugger and Soh. Bianca held her lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors as Red crossed the finish line second behind her. Daenerys was next to cross the finish line followed by Alexandre, Neil, Jackson, Ultra, Rugger, and Soh.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course, saw the fleet off to another quick but albeit somewhat bumpy start as nine of the eleven boat fleet were across the start line as 30 seconds ticked off the race clock. Soh got things started crossing the start line at 00:00:01 followed by Ultra on his stern, crossing at 00:00:04. Bianca, once again in the lone Bandit 25, crossed the start line next at 00:00:6 followed by Red, right on her stern, at 00:00:07. Bianca immediately tacked to port after crossing the start line and started a chain reaction colliding with Red which subsequently delayed Daenerys, Jackson, and Alexandre as they crossed the start line and tried to avoid colliding with Red and Bianca. Bianca was charged with a rule 13* foul and completed a 360° penalty when she was clear of fleet traffic. Daenerys crossed the start line finally at 00:00:13 followed by Jackson at 00:00:15, and Alexandre at 00:00:17. Julia crossed the start line next at 00:00:27, followed by Moon at 00:00:30, Neil at 00:00:55, and Rugger at 00:00:57. Alexandre, Jackson, and Daenerys all recovered well from the bumpy start, as Alexandre made his way to the front of the fleet, passing Ultra who settled in behind Alxandre. Jackson moved up through the fleet, settling in behind Ultra, as Daenerys nipped at his stern. Neil made moves of his own through the fleet and took up position behind Daenerys. Julia settled in just aft of Neil as Moon took up position near the rear of the fleet followed by Soh, who fell off his great start, and then Rugger. Red, after battling to recover from the bumpy start, ultimately abandoned the race and recorded a DNF. Bianca, after completing her penalty turn, tried to continue the race but her connection dropped resulting in her recording a DNF. Alexandre held on to his lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Ultra crossed the finish line second followed by Jackson, Daenerys, Neil, Julia, Moon, Soh, and Rugger.

This weeks Trudeau Patchogue II class races saw smooth sim weather with some really fun racing. The sims behaved well as there were no crashes due to region crossings or lag. We had a nice turnout of spectators to watch this small fun boats surf past with their centerboards up along the shore in the Eden Albatros region and also along the shores of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, saw a quick start as the entire fleet was across the start line as 33 seconds ticked off the race clock. Arwyn got things started as she crossed the start line first at 00:00:02 followed by myself, at 00:00:06. Red was next to cross the start line at 00:00:14 followed by Carlota, at 00:00:22, and Joshua at 00:00:33. Arwyn’s short lead evaporated along the first leg, to the southern tip of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, as the fleet bunched up and kept things tight. I overtook and passed Arwyn with Joshua right on my stern as Arwyn settled in for a neck and neck battle with Red. Carlota just aft of them as the fleet rounded the island in Genip for the return legs back to the finish. I was able to extend a small lead ahead of Joshua and cross the finish line first, taking line honors as Joshua crossed the finish line second. Red, holding off a strong challenge from Arwyn, crossed the finish line third with Arwyn crossing just 2 seconds after her followed by Carlota.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B course, saw an even quicker start as the entire fleet was on the course side of the start line by the time 16 seconds ticked off the race clock. Red got things started this time, crossing the start line at 00:00:02 followed by Arwyn, at 00:00:03, myself at 00:00:09, and Joshua at 00:00:16. Red took advantage of her quick start and held her lead for the entire course. I was just aft of Arwyn until overtaking her on the leg south to the southern tip of Lighthouse Isle, in the Ziziphus region. Joshua’s connection did not hold and he crashed, sending his boat and a small cruise south into Fruit Islands and also resulting in a DNF. Red crossed the finish line first, taking line honors as I crossed second followed by Arwyn.

Bandit Regatta – January 23rd 2017

From the left (in Bandit IFs): Neil, Rayz, and Macz.
On the dock: Riv, Gabi, Joshua, Cryptic, Petra, Peachie, and Carlota (in the water).

This weeks Bandit Regatta, in the North Sea, saw some great sim weather that turned stormy with another great spectator turnout. The sims behaved for the first race, the entire North Sea estate having been restarted three hours previous to race time as is our new procedure. However, the second race saw storms roll in as the Ziziphus region went pear shaped as the entire fleet entered it on it’s second to last leg of the race, forcing several DNFs. We did see a great spectator turnout though, as the usual places saw spectators gather to watch, in the Eden Albatros, Eden Puffin, Breadnut and Ziziphus regions. The weeks fleet was almost entirely a Bandit IF affair until Riv used his Bandit 60 in the second race.

The first race, on the NS-SOL-13A course, saw nice start from the fleet, all racing in Bandit IFs, as every racer was on the course side of the line by the time 30 seconds ticked off the race clock. Macz had an interesting pre-start line as it looked like he was almost going to try a port start across the fleet, heading west. However, Macs tacked to starboard, heading south, as it appeared he did not have enough speed to clear in front of the fleet, all heading south on a starboard tack, without committing a starboard/port Right Of Way foul. As Macz tacked south, before the start line, Jackson crossed the start line first, into the course side of the line, at 00:00:04. Carlota was next to cross the start line, 00:00:09. Macz, having completed his tack and now moving south, crossed the start line at 00:00:10. Neil was next to cross the start line at 00:00:19 followed by Red and Rayz both at 00:00:29. Macz wasted little time after his mid-fleet start, taking a tight line on the first upwind before tacking as he put himself in first ahead of Carlota and Jackson. Red wasted little time as she passed Rayz on the second beat upwind. Neil unfortunately crashed and record a DNF. This order held as Carlota nipped at Macz stern for the rest of the course before Macs crossed the finish line first, taking line honors followed, by Carlota crossing second. Jackson crossed the finish line third followed by Red and Rayz.

The second race, on the NS-SOL-13B, started of well with a majority of the fleet enter the course side of the start line as 45 seconds ticked off the race clock. Macz, in his Bandit IF, got things started as he crossed the start line first at 00:00:5. Carlota, in her bandit IF, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:09, followed by Red, in her Bandit IF, at 00:00:14. Neil, in his Bandit IF, was next across the start line at 00:00:20. Jackson and Rayz, both in their Bandit IFs, were next across the start line at 00:00:26 and 00:00:27 respectively. Riv, in his Bandit 60, was across the start line next, at 00:00:45. Gryfin, sailing his Bandit IF, was a late show to the races, as he had just come from a race in the Blake Sea and wound up getting into the course at 00:09:57. The fleet quickly made their way around Lighthouse Isle, in the Ziziphus region, the first mark of the course, as it is a island mark course. Macz was in the lead with Carlota once again nipping at his stern, followed by Jackson, Red, Rayz, Neil, and Riv. The fleet traveled east and circled clockwise around Hay Ah’s island in the Sloe region, the second mark of the course. As the fleet traveled back west to Lighthouse Isle again, the third mark of the course, trouble struck as everything went pear shaped in the Ziziphus region the moment the fleet entered it. Jackson made it through unscathed, as Macs, Carlota, Red, Neil, Rayz, and Riv all crashed upon crossing into Zizphus. Macz was able to make it back to his boat when he logged back in, and continue racing. Carlota, Red, Rayz, Riv, and Neil would record DNFs. Gryfin, having started so late sailed through Ziziphus unscathed on both legs through. Jackson took advantage of his fortune and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. Macz crossed the finish line second with Gryfin crossing third.

Today’s winner was Macz (Macz Murfin), with Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) second, and Carlota (Carlota Dufaux) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Note:
As the first race was entirely one boat class, the results for that race are presented in class format. Subsequently, the second race contained more than one boat class and is presented in handicapped format.

Gryfin (Gryfin Goldshark) and Neil (eager2discover Resident) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Gryfin Goldshark 3 7
eager2discover Resident 4 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Gryfin’s favor with having a third place finish over Neil’s fourth place finish as his best.

We have a superb paint supplied by Ali Vultee, see her paint here: Ali’s Boat Paint Shop to the first place overall winner.

This weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta, the last for 2016, saw a nice turnout with some smooth sim weather. The sims behaved well for everyone as we now restart the entire North Sea estate regions three hours before race time, helping settle any hiccups incurred from the weekends. Spectators also made another good showing today along the usual places in Eden Albatros, Eden Puffin, Ziziphus, and in Breadnut, cheering our racers on as they sailed past. This weeks fleet was an entirely IF affair, which made for some exciting racing as the fleet kept relatively tight packed throughout both courses.
