This weeks North Sea Open Regatta saw a nice fleet turn out with decent sim weather. The sims held up well as we only saw two DNFs as a result of crashes. This was also another week continuing the trend of large groups of spectators along the shores of the Eden Albatros region, the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region, the committee boat in the Breadnut region, the shores of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, and Robbins Reef Light in the Eden Godwit and Dragonfruit regions.
The small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Counter Clock Wise (NS-CCW) course, featured a split majority of three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows and three Shields Class. Two Bandit IFs, a TMS Laser One, a Dolphin Moth, a Quest Melges-24, a Trudeau Patchogue II, and a Trudeau T-12 made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. The fleet got off to an excellent start as nearly everyone, 12 of 13 sailors in all, was on the course side of the start line by the time 28 seconds ticked off the race clock. Luna, in her Shields Class, got things started as she crossed the start line at 00:00:01. I followed right behind Luna, in my Dolphin Moth, at 00:00:02. Lucy, in her Quest Melges-24, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:04. Peter in his TMS Laser One, was across the start line at 00:00:06. Traeumer and Moon, both in Shields CLass, were across the line next, both at 00:00:10. Carlota, in her Trudeau Patchogue II, was across the start line next at 00:00:11 followed by Dess, in her TMS Flying Shadow, at 00:00:12. Sue, in her Trudeau T-12, crossed the start line next at 00:00:20 followed by ViV, in her TMS Flying Shadow, at 00:00:23, and Rayz, in his TMS Flying Shadow, at 00:00:24. Neil, in his Bandit IF, was across the start line next, at 00:00:28. Shadow, in her Bandit IF with Michael, was across the start line next at 00:04:21. I leapt out ahead of the fleet, in my faster Dolphin Moth, immediately after the start line. Luna, in her slightly slower Shields Class, proceeded to fall back into roughly the middle of the fleet to lead the three strong Shields Class pack as Trauemer and Moon, both in Shields Class, fell in right behind her. Lucy, in her Quest Melges-24, crashed as her connection was just not fairing well for her and recorded a DNF. ViV, in her faster TMS Flying Shadow took up position aft of me, while Dess, in her TMS Flying Shadow was just behind her. Peter, in his slightly slower TMS Laser One, settled in bit behind Dess and ViV, as Rayz, in his TMS Flying Shadow, overcame some early troubles to settle in behind Peter. Carlota, in her Trudeau Patchogue II, found herself behind the Shields Class pack of Luna, Traeumer and Moon with Neil, in his Bandit IF, settling in just aft of her. Sue, in her much slower Trudeau T-12, followed along at the rear of the fleet. Shadow, in her Bandit if with Michael, ran into navigation trouble and abandoned the race on the first leg, recording a DNF. I crossed the finish line first, taking line honors, as ViV crossed the finish line second. Dess was next to cross the finish line, third, followed by Peter, Rayz, Luna, Traeumer, Moon, Carlota, Neil, and Sue.
The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Outer Inner Loop (NS-OIL Rev1) course, was made up of a majority of three Trudeau 12 Metres. Two Wildwind RC-44s, two TMS Ushuaias, and two TMS One Design 65s made up the remainder of the big boat fleet. The fleet got off the a great start with 7 of the 9 strong fleet on the course side of the start line by the time 30 seconds ticked off the race clock. Dess, in her Wildwind RC-44, and myself, in my TMS Ushuaia, got things started as we both crossed the start line at 00:00:005. ViV, in her TMS One Design 65, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:15 followed by Luna, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, at 00:00:18. Moon, in his Wildwind RC-44, was next across the start line at 00:00:26 followed by Rayz, in his TMS One Design 65, at 00:00:29. Traeumer, in his Wildwind RC-44, crossed the start line next at 00:00:30, followed by Sue, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, at 00:00:38 and Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, at 00:00:43. I fell back, in my slower TMS Ushuaia, as Dess, in her faster Wildwind RC-44, leapt ahead to pace the fleet. ViV, in her TMS One Design 65, had RL grab her and had to abandon the race, recording a DNF. Luna, in her slower Trudeau 12 Metre, also fell back as the faster Wildwind RC-44 of Moon, and the TMS One Design 65 of Rayz passed her. Rayz would continue his moves as he passed Moon to settle in behind Dess. Sue, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, would also pass Luna as I settled in right on Sue’s stern, initially. Peter, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, was stripped from his boat on the crossing from Soncoya into Nance, and crashed, recording a DNF. Traeumer, in his slower TMS Ushuais, settled in at the rear of the fleet. As Sue, in her Trudeau 12 Metre, and I, in my TMS Ushuaia, rounded the course mark in the Dragonfruit region, the pink buoy, Sue pointed to run downwind but I pointed to a broad reach to the next course mark in the Eden Auk region. I had better course speed as I passed Sue and held with Sue on my stern until the finish line. Dess, holding her lead over the pack, crossed the finish line first, recording line honors. Rayz crossed the finish line second, followed by Moon, myself, Sue, Luna, and Traeumer.

Peter (PeterSailor Resident), Dess (desspaa Resident), and Luna (LunaAzulejo Resident) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Peter’s favor with having a second place finish over Dess’s third place finish and Luna’s third place finish as their best.
Dess and Luna still remain tied with their duplicate finishes and Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“

In the last race, Dess breaks the tie with Luna with her third place finish over Luna’s seventh place finish.
Lucy (LucyInTheSky Afarensis) and Shadow (Shadow McConach) both finished tied with 22 points. As they each finished with exact duplicate results for each race, a DNF in the small boats portion and DNS in the big boats portion, neither A8.1 or A8.2 will satisfy breaking their tie and they remain tied with 22 points in twelfth place overall.
