A great fleet turnout, in light of some pesky region behavior, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally behaved for most, with the exception of the Sapote region which was offline until 5 minutes after the start of the small boat portion. Due to the Sapote regions late lunch, our originally planned courses of North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and North Sea Circle were changed to facilitate avoiding the gap left by the off line region. In light of the chaotic conditions, there was still only one DNF (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day, due to a skipper crossing on a region corner. The crowd that first gathered on the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and then moved to follow and watch this weeks fleet, to the shores of the island in the Genip region, cheered on the close-knit fleet racing on display.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Cutlew to Jeager 01 course, was comprised of a majority of six Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, one single-handed and one with crew, two TMS Nacra 17s, one TMS Star Class, one Bandit 25r, one Quest M-24, and one ReneMarine Clever1 rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Thornback course, was comprised of a majority of four Wildwind Open 60s. Three TMS One Design 65s, two TMS Volvo Open 70s, one TMS Ushuaia, one Wildwind RC-44r, one Wildwind AC-62, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

1Note: The handicap for the ReneMarine Clever has been updated to a value of 0.69. You can see more info at our North Sea Handicap Table along with a link to the Google Sheet used for calculating the handicap values.

Two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, both during the first race. Of those two DNFs, one was due to a skipper crashing while crossing on region corners and the other was from a crash on a region crossing. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Eden Auk, and Genip regions, as well as along the shore of the Pelican Sailing School, in the Eden Murrelet region, cheered on the fleet-fouled feline frenzy from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Thornback and North Sea Barracuda courses, was comprised of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing with crew and three sailing single-handed respectively. Great sailing weather, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of the North Sea were in great shape, as no DNFs (Did Not Finish) or crashes occurred on the day. We sailed from both of the North Sea’s race lines, in the Eden Curlew and Eden Jaeger region, with incredibly smooth seas across the estate. As a result of the great conditions, the crowds that were gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, as well as the small docks in the Eden Jakana and Eden Jaeger region, enjoyed some great racing from this weeks fleet-foiled flying felines. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Curlew to Jaeger 02 and North Sea Thornback courses, was comprised of a majority of four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively. Stormy to smooth sim sailing weather, with a great spectator turnout, highlighted this weeks, and the last of 20191 calendar year, Cat Fight in the North Sea. The regions of the North Sea were finicky during the first race, as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded, two to crashes and one to a skippers connection failing. The seas calmed down for the second race, as only one DNF was recorded, this one to that same skipper’s pesky connection failing. Spectators crowded the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, then spread out to the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions, as the race moved the fleet to the Eden Jaeger race line, were the second race started from and finished. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Curlew to Jaeger 02 and North Sea Thornback courses, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and two with crew respectively. Two TMS Nacra 17s rounded out the final frisky fleet-foiled Cat Fight fleet of the year.

1Special Note: The North Sea and Backwater Bay will take a two week holiday break from racing and sailing activities, starting Monday, December 23rd, 2019. Racing and sailing activities in the North Sea and out of Backwater Bay will then resume during the new year, on Monday, January 6th, 2020. Great sim sailing weather and spectator turnout highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of The North Sea behaved exceptionally well as the only DNF (Did Not Finish) on the day was due to a skipper triggering a gesture that dropped their The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow out of racing, into cruising, and subsequently losing race wind. By they time the skipper reset racing, while receiving a race wind broadcast from the race director who flew to them in the region, their navigation HUD stopped working. This all lead to the skipper pulling their boat out of frustration and receiving a DNF. The spectators on hand, had a much better time, as they gathered at the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions to take in the fast fleet-foiled feline frenzy on display. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Curlew to Jaeger 02 course and newly created North Sea Thornback course1, was comprised of a majority of six TMS Flying Shadows, four sailing single-handed and two sailing with crew respectively. One lone TMS Nacra 17 made up the remainder of this weeks fleet.
