Calm seas, with nice fleet turnouts, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions behaved well as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper pulling her boat after her connection started to fail. The remaining DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was due to a skipper crashing as he crossed over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on a spirited display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, split evenly with one single-handed and one crewed resptively, one Bandit IF, one TMS Laser One, and one ReneMarine Clever rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was made up of a small majority of three TMS I-Mocca 60s. Two Trudeau 12 Metres, two Bandit 60s, one Bandit 50, one TMS Cafe Del Mar 75, one WildWind Open 60, one WildWin SC-40, and one ACA33 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Note: As of the posting of these results, the ReneMarine Clever’s handicap has been adjusted from 0.67, to 0.68. To see the rest of our handicaps and the Google Sheet used to calculate them, please see North Sea Handicap Table.

Today’s winner was Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), with Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) second, and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.

Race Notes:
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was awarded a DNS (Did Not Start) for the small boat portion, as he crossed the startline early and did not circle back around to start properly as alerted both by the startline itself, and race staff. This has been a prescription to North Sea races since their inception in 2014. A sailor crossing the startline early must circle back around, away from the fleet, to start again properly.

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook), and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) both finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Aymalie Resident 2 3

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Julie’s favor with having a first place finish over Emileigh’s and Aymalie’s second place finishes as their best.

As Emileigh and Aymalie both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Calm seas, with nice fleet turnouts, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. As summer time in Europe came to an end this past weekend, while the United States has daylight savings time end this up coming weekend, a disparity of time existed that caused some havoc with skippers ability to attend races1. This disparity showed itself with lighter than usual fleets for both race portions. The North Sea regions responded in kind with smooth seas for most with only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) on the day. Both DNFs were attributed to skippers crashing while crossing across region corners. The crowds that gathered on the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, and on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in an energetic display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing a three lap affair on the North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of four Bandit 22 LTEs. One The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Bandit IF rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was made up of a slim majority of two WildWind Open 60s. One TMS I-Mocca 60, one TMS Pacha 110, one WildWind RC-44r, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

1Next week will return to normal for everyone as time will be once again linked properly.

Calm to slightly choppy seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Choppy to smooth seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were slightly choppy throughout the small boat portion, as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) occurred. Two of those DNFs were due to skippers crossing on region corners and crashing, with the remainder from a skipper pulling her boat after her connection started to have upwards of 40% packet loss. Conditions calmed a bit for the big boat portion, as two more DNFs were recorded. One of those two DNFs was due to a skipper’s WildWind losing it’s WWC race wind, with the remainder from a skipper crashing while crossing on a region corner. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Genip and Ziziphus regions, as well as on the small racing dock and Posiedon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on some exciting fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline course, was comprised of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Choppy seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. A mild storm blew across The North Sea regions as eight DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, split evenly at four in each portion of the regatta. Of the four DNFs that occurred in the small boat portion, two were from skippers crashing while crossing region corners, another from a skipper crashing on a crossing, and the final from a skipper pulling her boat right at the race line, mid-race. Of the four DNFs that occurred during the big boat portion, two were from skippers crashing on region crossings, and the remaining two were from skippers crashing while crossing region corners. The crowds that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, and small race dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, excitedly cheered on the close fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, three TMS Flying Shadows, one crewed Bandit IF, one Shields Class, one ReneMarine Clever, and one Dolphin Moth rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Smooth seas, that turned choppy late, and a great fleet turnout highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. The regions of The North Sea estate started the race day calm and smooth, as only one DNF (Did Not Finish) occurred during the first race. That DNF was due to a skipper causing a foul that forced another skipper to sail across region corners and crash. The calm seas would not last as a storm blew in during the second race, causing three additional DNFs to occur, all from region crossing crashes. The crowd that gathered on Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, witnessed some great fleet-foiled feline frenzy from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea WC Reach 1 course and a 2 lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was comprised of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, three sailing with crew and four sailing single-handed respectively. Three TMS Nacra 17s, and one Wildwind AC-62, which was switched out for a Wilwdind AC-45 in the second race, rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet.

Sirius (Sirius Rosca) and Sea (filax Carter) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 18:16. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Sirius and Sea receive 5.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 5 and 6, added together and divided equally.

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Isa (isab DeCuir) both finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
