Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Both DNFs, occurring during the small boat portion, were due to skippers connections dying on them during the race. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on a competitive display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Half Mane Mirror course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, one sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively, one TMS Flying Shadow, one TMS Nacra 17, one Bandit 25R, and one Quest 2m rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Double Loop course, was made up of a majority of three TMS I-Mocca 60s. One TMS One Design 65, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one WildWind Open 60, one Trudeau 12 Metre, one Bandit 55, and one Isard Machimacho rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Big boat fleet, from the left (in boats): Emileigh (Trudeau 12 Metre), Sandra (TMS Volvo Open 70), ViV (TMS I-Mocca 60), Aymalie (Isard Machimacho), Rugger and Yanny (Bandit 55), Sea (TMS I-Mocca 60), Jenna (TMS One Design 65), Zimtzicke (TMS I-Mocca 60), and Moon (WildWind Open 60). Today’s winner was Jenna (jnx1e Resident), with Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) second, and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the small boat portion tied at the finishing line with a time of 15:18. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Rugger and Moon receive 4.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 4 and 5, added together and divided equally.

ViV (vivipezz Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the big boat portion for missing the last course mark before crossing the finish line, the orange buoy in the Eden Jakana region.

Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished tied with 14 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
WWWAAAA Resident 6 8
Nicole Myhre 7 7

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sandra’s favor with having a sixth place finish over Zimtzicke’s eighth place finish as her best.

Vicky (Vicky4698 Resident) and Theresa (Resi Pfeffer) both finished tied with 22 points. As they both have the exact same finishes in each race, a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the small boat portion and a DNS (Did Not Start) for the big boat portion, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking this tie. Therefore, Vicky and Theresa remain tied in twelfth place overall.
