This weeks Triple Threat featured good wind coming from the southwest on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in May. The North Sea and Eden regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had 12 Bandits at the start line of the first race. The fleet was made up of seven Bandit 22 LTEs and five Bandit IFs. A Bandit IF and a Bandit 22 had crew on board.

Today was the day we used three old cards but with unchanged race marks. At first the skippers would enter the races without USBs (Ultimate Sailor Buddy navigation notecards), but a few hours before the race I found two USBs that were still good and I quickly made a USB for the third race. Eventually it turned out that sailing between islands is a different story than sailing on the open sea. In the first two races, the skippers took different routes between the race marks. However, things did not go well here and there. Apart from that, the three races would be great races. There were closely fought battles between all the skippers.

We had six DNFs (Did Not Finish) and six DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Saturday saw the North Sea Bandit IF races take place on a beautiful fall afternoon. This time we had a fleet of nine Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the nine Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea regions and Eden Naturist Estate regions were well behaved and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had a good start and one of the skippers started from port tack and immediately took the lead over the group of eight. The first mark was completed without any problems. Halfway through Eden we had a front runner with two pursuers, followed by another group of two. After the race ended, we had an extended fleet. The leader took a completely different route to the finish than all other skippers.

The start of the second race went very well. The group of eight boats stayed together until the first mark and on the way to Eden we had a group of three skippers sailing together head to head. In the Eden Pigeon region, the leading group was still well together and it seemed that the race would be settled on the finish line. However, one of the skippers said goodbye to the two other front runners by sailing a different route. This decision made the race’s outcome decided by the time they were in the Eden Sparrow region.

The start of the third race went well. The remaining seven boats stayed together until after the first mark in the Sapodilla region. After the fleet entered Eden past the two statues in the Eden Gateway region, we had a front runner with three pursuers. In the new region “Smooth Sailing”, the front runner was overtaken by the chasing group. At the Eden Pigeon region, one of the front runners took a different route to the last mark in the Eden Snowfinch region, as it turned out that the leading group had been given a different order. Two of the front runners here took away from the third boat and decided the race on the finish line.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

A beautiful Thursday afternoon with good sailing weather, the wind coming from the south west, and no sign of a thunderstorm. Today we had seven Bandit IFs and three Bandit 22 LTEs, two IFs and one 22 had extra crew on board.

The start of the first race went without a hitch and it was only in Eden that the three 22s split from the seven IFs and after the race ended, mutual fights between two 22s and four IFs started.

After the start of the second race, the fleet stretched quite quickly with three 22s and two IFs having quickly made a gap to the other boats in the fleet. A small thunderstorm occurred in Eden, which made it difficult for several skippers to keep the boat under control. But everyone came out of our weather boot without clothes rips.

We had no DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Max (Maximiliano Szondi) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for sailing an incorrect course, missing the fifth mark in the course, an island in the Eden Pigeon region.

Jack (Jacquimo Resident) and Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 20:09. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“

Therefore, both Jack (Jacquimo Resident) and Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) receive 2.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 2 and 3, added together and divided equally.

Sea (filax Carter) and Micha (Micha Karfieldt) both finished tied with 5 points.. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to further break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores“

Micha Karfieldt 2 3

In the last race, Sea breaks the tie with Micha with her second place finish over Micha’s third place finish

Max (Maximiliano Szondi) and Miki (mikinakashima Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Max’s favor with having a fourth place finish over Miki’s fifth place as her best.

Saturday morning, after I sent the announcement, I already had a number of skippers in my IM stating, “The same USB stares in twice”, “The map is the same twice”. Yes that’s right I said. What’s wrong with sailing the same route twice, a route that no one has sailed yet. The difference between the two races would be the wind direction. This would make the route feel different.

Saturday afternoon, Finally the time had come. This time we had nine Bandit IFs at the start, one Bandit IF with crew.
The North Sea regions behaved well and even in the Eden waters there was not a cloud in the sky. However, during the first race we already lost a boat right after the start.

We had a great start with 5 boats next to each other. The other 4 boats sailed around this group of 5. After rounding the first mark, they headed for Eden. The fleet there was still quite compact. On the way to the third mark half of the fleet sailed north of the island in Eden Owl and the other half sailed south of the island. By rounding the third mark, we had four boats in charge. After the fourth mark had been completed, the front runners set sail for the bridge of Eden Naturopolis. Chaos ensued here because this bridge was seemingly unknown to everyone.

Leaving Eden Naturopolis we had a different order in the leading group. The fleet would pass another narrow passage and then sail in the direction of the finish through the canal.

The start of the second race also went well, but the race director (RD) had decided to keep the skippers awake and set the countdown to 2 minutes. As a result, the fleet of seven boats fell apart a bit faster. Since we sailed the route again, everyone now knew that the bridge was in Eden Naturopolis. Two skippers did get the bridge on their heads when it closed again. The last leg was a challenge for most skippers because the wind was blowing more over the canal.

We had one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualififed) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

the chaos was complete when the leader saw a road over the water and turn back.
