A calm mid-May Saturday was the scene for this weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta. We had six Bandit IFs at the start. Julie immediately took the lead, followed by Moon and Rugger. But, Julie and Moon quickly distanced themselves from Rugger, who in turn was chased by Siri. These two numbers would fight it out among themselves who would win against them.

In the second race, Moon took the lead but was followed by Rugger, Julie and Jack. The four of them went for the first mark. On the way to the second mark everyone had found their own line. The foursome had been caught up by Siri and Markis. However, two groups of three skippers emerged. Jack, Julie, and Moon as the frontrunners with Siri, Markis and Rugger as the second group. But that didn’t last long. Julie saw the chance to sail away from Jack and Moon. And Siri had connected with Jack. But on the way to the Melon region, the group fell apart and Moon joined Julie.

There were no DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

The third North Sea Bandit IF Regatta of 2023 saw a fleet of seven Bandit IFs at the start.

During the start of the first race, Julie immediately took the lead. Followed by Moon, Red and Jack. During the course of the match, Julie distanced herself from Moon. He was closely followed by Red, Jack, and Siri. They would fight for second place.

We started the second race with six boats. Jack was at the start line too early and had to catch up behind. The other five skippers had a good start. Red in front, with Julie at her side and Moon, Siri and Rugger on the second line. Julie and Moon engaged in a fight. Red took advantage of this again. Siri and Rugger continued to follow Red. In Sloe Julie had caught up with Red, Siri followed the two skippers but broke down. Rugger and Moon had fallen a little behind. Jack had made it to the fleet, but failed here. Moon managed to connect with Julie and Red, but Rugger just couldn’t connect. At the Banana region, Julie was still in the lead and Moon and Red battled for second place. Rugger hadn’t given up hope yet and kept his distance. In the Melon region, Moon made a wrong decision that caused Julie to leave the fleet for good. Red and Rugger saw their chance and took over the second and third positions. With Red in second and Rugger in third, the cards seemed to be on the table. However, Red took a different line than Rugger and Moon in the last leg. This would see her finish fourth.

There was one DNF (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

A beautiful Saturday afternoon was the backdrop for the first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for December, 2022. We started with six bandit IFs. We had a great start and Rugger took the lead right away. But Julie took the lead over from Rugger. Through the islands of Fruit and with an easterly wind we got to see some exciting competitions. At the second mark, Julie and Moon were in the lead, but Moon made a mistake and fell behind. Red and Siri took advantage of this and followed Julie at a distance. Rugger and Jack went into another battle but Rugger had started too early and actually sailed for bacon and beans.

At the start of the second race, Red and Julie miscalculated and had to start in the back of the fleet. Moon saw his chance and took the lead, which he would manage to hold on to until the finish. With the easterly wind, the first half of the route made a tactical one. What was the best place to tack? Everyone seems to have the best chance for second place. But that changed as the race progressed. Siri turned out to have the best papers, followed by Rugger and Julie. But Rugger had to give up. Julie hooked up with Siri, but he didn’t give up for a long time. However, he eventually had to let Julie go first. In the last meters of the race, Red was close behind Siri, which resulted in a nice finish.

Race Notes:
Siri (Sirius Rosca) and Red (RedHeadJO Resident) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 20:11.9. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Siri and Red receive 3.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 3 and 4, added together and divided equally.

The first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for September, 2022, took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We started with five Bandit IFs.

In the first race, the fleet stayed close together. One of the skippers, Julie, had a breakdown and had to join the rear. Moon and Siri were going to compete for first place, but Zero held back and finished second behind Moon. Midway through the race, Moon had caught up with Max, and Siri and Zero were following at close range.

At the start of the second race, Julie had a flying start. However, she was closely followed by Max. Moon, Siri and Zero followed at a distance. Julie, still the first to be chased by Moon. Siri and Zero had now also caught up with Max. This created a group in the rear. These were going to compete for third place

In the last race, Julie breaks the tie with Jack with her first place finish over jack’s third place finish.

Siri (Sirius Rosca) and Juicy (juice651 Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Sirius Rosca 4 7
juice651 Resident 5 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sirius’ favor with having a fourth place finish over Juicy’s sixth place finish as his best.
