The last North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for February, 2023, took place on a pleasant Saturday afternoon. We had six bandit IFs at the start. One bandit IF had crew on board. Later, two more skippers joined the fleet.

Julie took the lead in the first race. Followed by Moon and Siri. They would fight fiercely for the top three places. During the race, two skippers broke down.

During the second race, Siri took the lead, but it was soon taken over by Moon. Julie broke down but was still able to resume her race. Two other skippers had to give up during the race.

It had to happen in the last race. Julie immediately took the head and did not give it away. Siri went into battle with Moon. Jack managed to take advantage of this and took second place. He would have to defend this place in the course of the race, because Moon didn’t leave him alone. Siri, meanwhile, was battling Rugger for fourth place.

There were four DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a beautiful mid-August Saturday afternoon. We started with seven Bandit IFs. One of the seven Bandit IFs had crew on board. At the start of the first race, the entire fleet sailed towards the first mark. There, Rugger, Zero, and Julie pushed to be the first to round this one. They were followed shortly by Moon. Then Darb, Siri and Jack followed. In that order, they sailed toward the third and fourth marks. Here Moon had bad luck and Siri connected with Julie, Zero and Rugger. Jack hooked up at the end of the race too, but then Julie had taken a slight lead over Zero and Rugger.

In the second race, a new skipper reported and we started with eight Bandit IFs. A group of five skippers, including Moon, Jack, Rugger, Julie and Zero, had a slight lead as we approached the canal in the Guanabana region. The passage was tight. En route to the North Sea, Rugger had taken the lead and was being chased by Zero, Julie, Moon and Siri. Just before Sloe, Rugger was caught up by his pursuers. Here Julie and Moon took the lead. Julie distanced himself from moon and the foursome behind Julie would compete for second to fifth place. 10 meters before the finish, disaster struck for Rugger. He crashed on a corner and his ship went in circles. In the end he finished seventh.

With one race to go, Julie could take it easy, but she didn’t. At the start she took the lead and Rugger tried a different tack and started from port. Arriving at the first mark, Julie was still in the lead and was chased by Moon, Siri and Max. Rugger followed in fifth. On the way to the Nectarine region, Max was overtaken by Rugger and Zero. Jack stayed a bit behind. At the statues of Eden, Max caught up with Rugger again. On the finish line Jack and Rugger made it exciting for sixth place

There was one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through all the races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Saturday saw a beautiful afternoon in the winter. This time we had a fleet of ten Bandit IF’s at the start. Two of the eight Bandit IFs had crews. The North Sea and Fruit regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky. We thought so.

In the first race had a nice start. A skipper already took the lead. Behind her came a group of five Bandits who wanted to sail together past the first mark. This went extremely well. During the race, the skippers distanced themselves from the other four. However, another skipper had joined the four other boats. As a result, the group continued to consist of 5 boats. As the race progressed, the group slowly fell apart. The two front runners had got their hands on their position.

In the second race, everything seemed to be going well, until a region worked against it. As a result, the race had to be re-started. However, some skippers did not immediately respond to a restart. After the restart of the second race, we immediately had five boats in the lead. The five skippers would compete for first place

In the third and final race of the day we had a compact fleet of eight boats. Because the skippers each sailed a different line to the first mark, groups soon arose. And it soon became clear who was going to win this third race.

There was no DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

The last Saturday in July saw a beautiful summer afternoon for racing. This time we had a fleet of nine Bandit IF’s at the start. One of the nine Bandit IF’s had crew and it had to drop out at the first start. The North Sea and Fruit regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky.

Today we would sail three races. In the first race, the fleet would stay together until the third leg. Then groups arose, eventually becoming groups of duos. We would see this happen in the other two races. At the second race we had a compact fleet until we approached the first mark. There, two skippers lost control of the boat, but would later recover. One of the two skippers then held a catch-up race, which created a group of two with the pursuers. In the third race, the fleet spread out to the first mark, only to come together again, creating duos right away.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and none DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Saturday afternoon was a stormy fall afternoon. This time we had a fleet of eight Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the eight Bandit IFs had crew. After the first match, another Bandit joined the group.

Today we had three short routes and with the higher wind force, the fleet was pulled apart quite quickly. However, we would also have many dropouts due to the stormy weather. Some sailors were unlucky and others gave up.

Saturday afternoon was a beautiful afternoon in the fall. This time we had a fleet of twelve Bandit IFs at the start. Did I say twelve? Four of the twelve Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea regions and Fruit regions were well behaved and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had a good start and we had a group of eight boats right from the start. One of the eight boats immediately said goodbye and split from the group. So we were left with seven boats and behind them were the last four boats. At the first mark we immediately had a group of nine boats. One boat had rejoined the group of seven and one of the pursuers had joined. At the statues of Eden, in the Eden Gateway region, we had a leading group of five sailors. After the Nectarine region had passed, each went their own way to the Sapodilla region. Some took the route through the islands, while others sailed through the North Sea. Here the race was also decided.

In the second race we had a group of eleven boats heading for the first mark. The first two marks were completed without any problems by the entire fleet. On the way to the next marks the fleet was stretched and a boat was already away from the fleet. North of the Ziziphus region, “the line broke” and we had a leader, with five pursuers and behind them the other skippers. On the way to Nectarine, one of the skippers said goodbye to the other four boats and gave chase to the leader. One of the four skippers had technical problems, so he missed the mark and had to return.

We had no DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Saturday afternoon was a beautiful day for sailing. This time we again had ten boats of the same class, namely Bandit IFs, one of the Bandit IFs had crew. In the North Sea we do not sail the same route every week, so the skippers can dream this route after having sailed it a few times. The North Sea regions behaved well and even in the Fruit waters there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had a good start and the first tack to the first mark went smoothly. At the first mark had three boats that had taken the lead. The other seven boats remained together in herds. The battle for first place was not decided until the third last mark

The start of the second race went smoothly and a fleet of eight boats sailed to the first two marks. Halfway through the race we had two groups of four boats. The winner of the competition would be decided between the four boats now in charge. However, the battle was not over yet. This was only decided at the last mark.

We had no DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualififed) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea..

Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“

Therefore, both Tora (torajiro Whitfield) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) receive 8.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 8 and 9, added together and divided equally.

Siri (Sirius Rosca) and Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) both finished tied with 6 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

Saturday was a beautiful afternoon, in the middle of a hot summer, with good sailing weather and not a single thunderstorm to be seen. Today we invited several classes to make this Saturday afternoon a special competition. So we had seven Bandit IFs and five Bandit 22 LTEs, all sailing single-handed.
Just like last week, the boats would all start at the same time, but this would lead to two races taking place at the same time.

We had a good start again. Immediately after the start a group of eight boats was formed. It was a nice mix of four Bandit IFs and four Bandit 22s. Between Eden Albatros and Eden Curlew we had two groups. A group of three Bandit 22s and a group of five Bandit IFs, making the mutual battle more visible.

In the second race we had a compact group of eleven boats, a Bandit IF was left behind. At Sapote the whole group was clear and we had another group of Bandit 22s and a group of Bandit Ifs, but this group was more spread over the north sea.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Micha (Micha Karfield) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for sailing an incorrect course, rounding the Orange Mark clockwise (CW) instead of counter-clockwise (CCW) in the Sapodilla region as indicated by the course.

Micha (Micha Karfield) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director for a 18.2 GIVING MARK ROOM foul.

“18.2 Giving Mark-Room
(b) If boats are overlapped when the first of them reaches the zone, the outside boat at that moment shall
thereafter give the inside boat mark-room. If a boat is clear ahead when she reaches the zone,
the boat clear astern at that moment shall thereafter give her mark-room.“

Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Julie ( JulieRoyale Resident) both finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores“

Sirius (Sirius Rosca) and Izi (Izi Shinohara) both finished tied with 7 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Jack (Jacquimo Resident), Kim (Kim Farleigh) and Tora (torajiro Whitfield) all finished tied with 12 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Jacquimo Resident 5 7
Kim Farleigh 5 7
torajiro Whitfield 6 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jack and Kim’s favor with having a fifth place finish over Tora’s sixth place finish as his best. As both Jack and Kim have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to further break this tie:

“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores“
