Calm seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were smooth and well behaved, as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Two of those DNFs were due to skippers crashing in the first race, one from a region crossing crash and one from hitting region corners. The third DNF, recorded during the second race, was from a skipper pulling his boat after being frustrated from ending up at the rear of the fleet. The crowds that gathered on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both in the Eden Jakana region, and on the observation deck of the lighthouse on the island in the Ziziphus region, were cheering on this weeks Bandit skippers as they put on an impressive display of fleet sailing. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 03 and North Sea 02 courses, was comprised of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, two sailing with crew and two sailing single-handed respectively, and three Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Skippers round the southern coast of the island in the Ziziphus region, during the second race of the North Sea Bandit Regatta, on Monday, July 27th, 2020.

Race Notes:
Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as directed by a race director due to a Rule 10 On Opposite Tacks foul.
“10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.“

Yvonne (YvonneDearly Resident) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:10:24. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Yvonne’s favor with having a 624.02 seconds finish over Sirius’s 624.15 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Jenna (jnx1e Resident), Daenerys (blondij Resident), and Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) all finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a first place finish over Daenerys’s and Sandra’s second place finishes as their best. As Daenerys and Sandra both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
