After being away for a week we are back with the first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for February, 2023. We had three races scheduled today. Nevertheless, we had six Bandit IFs at the start. Today’s starts would give some problems because we had to sail with a completely different wind direction than usual.

The three races were exciting and the skippers were evenly matched. This would make the decision fall in the last race.

There were two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through all three races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Siri (Sirius Rosca) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race for finishing under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn due to a Rule 11 On The Same Tack, Overlapped foul at the start, colloquially known as barging.

“11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.“

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

The last North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for June, 2022, took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We started with seven Bandit IFs. The start of the first race went smoothly. Six boats in a row sailed across the starting line. Alex stayed a little behind. Fanny and Julie took a small lead and arrived first at the first mark. The four other skippers, Siri, Zero, Rugger and Jack, were already slightly behind. They would be competing for third place. Julie and Fanny would compete for first place.

After a short delay, the second race started. Six boats together competed for first place. During the first leg, the fleet would spread out across the North Sea. By the time of the first and only mark, Fanny was already ahead of the fleet with Zero and Julie. Fanny would increase her lead in the final leg.

The third and final race was again led by the same six boats. A skipper gave up in the first leg. Fanny took the lead with Jack in second. Julie, Zero and Siri had to follow at a distance. Another battle for third place ensued between Julie and Siri, but the match already seemed over.

There were three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

With wind coming from the southwest, The North Sea regions behaved well and there was not a cloud in the sky. Today we had a fleet of ten Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the ten Bandit IFs had crew. One of the skippers had to abandon the first race due to technical problems. Today we had three great races. There were closely fought battles between all the skippers.

We had two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and none DSQs (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Jack (Jacquimo Resident) and Emi (Emileigh Starbrook) receive 4.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 4 and 5, added together and divided equally.

Calm seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were well behaved as only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, both occurring during the first race. Of those two DNFs, one was from a skipper hitting a corner, and the other from a skipper pulling her boat. The crowds that gathered on the small race dock and Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, both located in the Eden Jakana region, and along the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on the close fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 01 and North Sea 03 courses, was comprised of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Seven Bandit IFs, four sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively, two Bandit 25s, and one Bandit 50/3 X rounded out the fleet for the first race. Some skippers switched things around for the second race, as one skipper switched out her Bandit 22 LTE for a Bandit 50/3 X, and another switched out her Bandit IF for a Bandit 22 LTE.

The first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta of 2021 was held on beautiful Saturday afternoon in the winter. This time we had a fleet of thirteen Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the twelve Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea regions were well behaved and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had a good start and right from the start we had a compact fleet of ten boats. This fleet did not hold for long, because at the first mark we had several groups of two boats each.

In the second race, the fleet spread over the entire North Sea immediately after the start, only at the first mark of this race it became clear who was in charge. The rest of the fleet followed closely behind.

The start of the third race caused some problems. Because the wind direction had changed 10 degrees from the first race, there was a risk of barging for three skippers early in the pre-start. One of the skippers saw this and corrected her speed and direction. The two other skippers continued until the start and were also penalized for this. After the start we had a nice battle for second place.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

This Saturday afternoon we had a fleet of nine Bandit IFs at the start. The North Sea regions behaved well with not a cloud in the sky. We held three races in a row for a change. All three races had good starts.

In the first race, there was immediately a group of four leaders, with a chasing group of five. This only changed after the island in the Genip region was rounded. There, a skipper took the lead for good, chased by two boats followed by a group of five boats.

In the second race, a skipper went his own way. The fleet of seven boats stayed together. They met again at the first round of the south point of the island in the Ziziphus region. From here, the fleet stretched and went towards the turning point in Sloe. The race was decided on the finish line.

After the start of the third race, the Bandit Ifs soon spread across the North Sea. At the turning point in the Sonsoya region, it would appear that the fleet was already stretched. The turning point gave a skipper problems, because she did not give way to another skipper, she ended up in irons.

We had one DNFs (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

YvonneDearly 761 0.82 624.02
Sirius 1095 0.57 624.15

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Yvonne’s favor with having a 624.02 seconds finish over Sirius’s 624.15 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish

WWWAAAA Resident 2 3

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a first place finish over Daenerys’s and Sandra’s second place finishes as their best. As Daenerys and Sandra both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.
