Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were mostly calm as one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day. The lone DNF happened right after the start of the first race, when a skipper pulled his boat on the course side of the start line. The crowds that assembled along the beaches on the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on an exciting display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and the North Sea Trapezoid course, was made up of a majority of six Bandit 22 LTEs1. Four Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and two crewed respectively, and one Bandit 25R rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

1As of the publication of these results, the handicap value for the Bandit 22 LTE has been adjust to 0.79, up from 0.78. Please see North Sea Handicap Table for the rest of our handicaps and a link to the Google Sheet used to calculate them.

Race Notes:
Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) and Markis (Marcus Schechter) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 22:19. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Zimtzicke and Markis receive 10.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 10 and 11, added together and divided equally.

Sea (filax Carter) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) both finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sea’s favor with having a third place finish over Sirius’s fouth place finish as his best.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) both finished tied with 13 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the first North Sea Bandit Regatta for March, 2023. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were generally well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, recorded during the first race, was from a skipper’s internet connection giving out due to stormy weather in her neighborhood. The remaining DNF, recorded during the second race, was from a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. With a gentle breeze of 8 knots out of the southwest, rising to a moderate breeze of 11 knots during the second race, The North Sea regions were generally behaved for most as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the first race, was from a skipper pulling his boat after frustration from being stuck in irons right after the start. The second and third DNFs, one also in the first race and the later in the second race, were from skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The remaining DNF, occurring in the second race, was from a skipper’s connection dying on her during the race. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in a gripping display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Short) and a two lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Five Bandit IFs, four sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively, and one Bandit 25R rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

In the last race, Markis breaks the tie with Sirius with his ninth place finish over Sirius’s eleventh place finish.

Cole (ColeBatriani Resident) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) finished tied with 26 points. As they both have duplicate finishes in each race, a DNF (Did Not Finish) in the first race and DNS (Did Not Start) in the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Cole and Max remain tied in thirteenth place overall.

This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta and North Sea Manta Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Two Bandit IFs, split evenly at one crewed and one single-handed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

With the publication of these results, comes the completion of the North Sea Standard Yearly Adjustment. All handicaps in today’s regatta are from the new adjustment. After two previous years of changes, The North Sea Standard1 stayed steady this time at 0:10:30, with no change from last year. The largest refactoring came from the The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow increasing to 1.09 from 1.03, placing it on par with the TMS Nacra 17, also up to 1.09 from 1.08. Likewise, the crewed TMS Flying Shadow also increases to 1.36, up from 1.32. North Sea Olympic Course (Long), the course the North Sea Standard is based on, was used 35 times in 2022, with the winning time of each race added to the data the standard is based on. From those 35 races, 287 finishing times were used to help update or reinforce the handicap values of more than 31 boats in our table. For more info, as well as a link to the Google Sheet used to calculate everything, please see North Sea Handicap Table.

1 The North Sea Standard is the average sailing time of all race winners on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) racing with a 225° (SW) 18 knot wind. This is the time that all handicaps on the North Sea Handicap Table are weighted against.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 11:02.

Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) finished tied with 6 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Boogie Aeghint 9 13

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Alejandro’s favor with having a ninth place finish over Vicky’s eleventh place finish as her best.
