Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. With a moderate breeze of 15 knots out of the southwest, rising to a fresh breeze of 18 knots during the second race, The North Sea regions were generally behaved for most as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the first race, was attributed to a skipper crashing to her desktop in the middle of a region. The second DNF, occurring during the second race, was from a skipper crashing while she crossed over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, were thrilled by an electric display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta and North Sea Manta Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Two Bandit IFs, split evenly at one crewed and one single-handed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

With the publication of these results, comes the completion of the North Sea Standard Yearly Adjustment. All handicaps in today’s regatta are from the new adjustment. After two previous years of changes, The North Sea Standard1 stayed steady this time at 0:10:30, with no change from last year. The largest refactoring came from the The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow increasing to 1.09 from 1.03, placing it on par with the TMS Nacra 17, also up to 1.09 from 1.08. Likewise, the crewed TMS Flying Shadow also increases to 1.36, up from 1.32. North Sea Olympic Course (Long), the course the North Sea Standard is based on, was used 35 times in 2022, with the winning time of each race added to the data the standard is based on. From those 35 races, 287 finishing times were used to help update or reinforce the handicap values of more than 31 boats in our table. For more info, as well as a link to the Google Sheet used to calculate everything, please see North Sea Handicap Table.

1 The North Sea Standard is the average sailing time of all race winners on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) racing with a 225° (SW) 18 knot wind. This is the time that all handicaps on the North Sea Handicap Table are weighted against.

Alejandro (Boogie Aeghin) and Rayz (Rayzza Rubble) finished tied with 11 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
Boogie Aeghin 6 5
Rayzza Rubble 5 6

In the last race, Alejandro breaks the tie with Rayz with his fifth place finish over Rayz’s sixth place finish.

Julia (Geneer Gynoid) and Emilio (emiliopc7 Resident) both finished tied with 13 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Geneer Gynoid 3 10
emiliopc7 Resident 4 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Julia’s favor with having a third place finish over Emilio’s fourth place finish as his best.

Committee boat: Daenerys.
Pier: Arwen, and Dana.
Dock: Cryptic, Caethes, and Red.

This weeks North Sea Bandit IF Regatta took place on a slightly stormy Saturday afternoon in February. We had six bandit IFs at the start. One Bandit IF had crew on board.

The fleet set out with Julie in the lead. Moon, Siri and Darb at an appropriate distance. As the match progressed, Moon and Siri joined Julie. Darb and Marcus soon became distant.

At the start of the second race, Julie took the lead again. She was immediately followed by Siri, Moon, and Rugger. Halfway through the race, a storm (https://status.secondlifegrid.net/incidents/qjsnz431kdqm) was created by SL™. This caused Julie, and Siri to lose their way. Moon, and Rugger took advantage of this. Julie, and Siri had to pull out all the stops to reconnect with Moon, and Rugger. Rugger was still overtaken, but Moon had the lead for good

Finally, it was time. The third and final race of the day. The storm had passed again. And a seventh sailor joined the party. This time it was crowded at the starting line. Moon, Julie, Siri, Jack, and Rugger left almost simultaneously. The quintet headed for the first mark in good spirits. Here Julie took the lead. Moon followed in her wake. Jack had to drop out. At the turning point, Julie was still in charge. She wouldn’t let this one go

There was one DNF (Did Not Finish) and two DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 11:02. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Rugger and Zimtzicke receive 5.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 5 and 6, added together and divided equally.

Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) finished tied with 6 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Alejandro’s favor with having a ninth place finish over Vicky’s eleventh place finish as her best.

Bandit IF Regatta – Feb 11th 2023

Committee boat: Daenerys, and Tamarushka.
Pier: Cole, Buttercups, and Sunday.
Dock: Tamar, Cryptic, Caethes, and Markis.

The second North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for February, 2023, took place on a pleasant Saturday afternoon. We had seven bandit IFs at the start. The fleet set out with Julie in the lead. Moon, Rugger, and Siri followed at an appropriate distance. Jack, and Vicky followed behind. On the way to the second mark, Moon broke away from Rugger, and Siri. Jack, and Vicky joined them. On the way to the final mark, Julie had managed to maintain a good lead over Moon. Moon against that had a good lead over the fleet.

At the start of the second race, Red ran into a bit of trouble, which meant that Moon took the lead. Closely followed by Siri, and Julie. Behind that we had Jack, and Rugger. At the statues, or where statues used to be in Eden, Rugger sailed away from Jack. But that was only for a short time. At the next mark, Jack had overtaken Rugger again. Meanwhile, Julie had passed Siri, and was chasing Moon. Moon had to pull out all the stops to stay ahead of Julie.

Finally it was time. The third and final race of the day. Rugger, and Julie had a good start. Rugger took the lead followed by Vicky, Siri, and Julie. Moon took another line and this made him take over the lead in the region of Ziziphus. Siri, and Rugger fought over the Ziziphus coastline. Julie, on the other hand, had broken away from Rugger, and tried to follow Moon. Red, and Jack tacked before Moon, and Siri. Julie got stuck behind Rugger again and had to wait because of this. When they arrived at Genip, Moon was still in charge. Julie had taken second place. Jack, Siri, and Rugger followed at an appropriate distance. Leaving Genip, Jack was firmly in control of third place. Back in the region of Ziziphus, Julie surprised Moon and took charge of him. Rugger, Siri, and Red would go on to battle for fourth place.

There was one DNF (Did Not Finish) and no DSQs (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

After being away for a week we are back with the first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta for February, 2023. We had three races scheduled today. Nevertheless, we had six Bandit IFs at the start. Today’s starts would give some problems because we had to sail with a completely different wind direction than usual.

The three races were exciting and the skippers were evenly matched. This would make the decision fall in the last race.

There were two DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through all three races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.

Calm seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. With a moderate breeze of 15 knots out of the southwest, rising to a fresh breeze of 18 knots during the second race, The North Sea regions were well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the first race, was from a skipper pulling his boat towards the end of the race when his crew decided they needed to go dancing instead. The second DNF, occurring during the second race, was from a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, took in a lively display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline and North Sea Bowline Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet in the first race. For the second race, the crewed Bandit IF team left to go and dance during the end of the first race, while two Bandit 22 LTE skippers joined the fleet.

(b) If boats are overlapped when the first of them reaches the zone, the outside boat at that moment shall
thereafter give the inside boat mark-room. If a boat is clear ahead when she reaches the zone,
the boat clear astern at that moment shall thereafter give her mark-room.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) finished tied with 24 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, 12 point finishes in each race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. The third North Sea Bandit IF Regatta of 2023 saw a fleet of seven Bandit IFs at the start.

During the start of the first race, Julie immediately took the lead. Followed by Moon, Red and Jack. During the course of the match, Julie distanced herself from Moon. He was closely followed by Red, Jack, and Siri. They would fight for second place.

We started the second race with six boats. Jack was at the start line too early and had to catch up behind. The other five skippers had a good start. Red in front, with Julie at her side and Moon, Siri and Rugger on the second line. Julie and Moon engaged in a fight. Red took advantage of this again. Siri and Rugger continued to follow Red. In Sloe Julie had caught up with Red, Siri followed the two skippers but broke down. Rugger and Moon had fallen a little behind. Jack had made it to the fleet, but failed here. Moon managed to connect with Julie and Red, but Rugger just couldn’t connect. At the Banana region, Julie was still in the lead and Moon and Red battled for second place. Rugger hadn’t given up hope yet and kept his distance. In the Melon region, Moon made a wrong decision that caused Julie to leave the fleet for good. Red and Rugger saw their chance and took over the second and third positions. With Red in second and Rugger in third, the cards seemed to be on the table. However, Red took a different line than Rugger and Moon in the last leg. This would see her finish fourth.

There was one DNF (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through both races and it was another successful and sporty day in The North Sea.
