Ocean Beach Handicap
We have started to handicap the Ocean Beach catamaran from The Mesh Shop. I have had one set of results in, and I would appreciate a few more. If you have the yacht, and are willing to help, take it to Breadnut in the North Sea, Race the North Sea Olympic (long) with a SW wind (225°), of 18 Kts. Then send me (Petra) the results as given by the race-line in local chat when you finish.
For now, the handicap is 0.58, the same as the Bandit IF. This is subject to change as we get more results in, but it shouldn’t change too much.
Thanks to Aneke for the times so far, thanks to Cat for the photo.
Trudeau Patch II class racing 3 Nov 2016
Good racing in the North Sea. Conditions were accommodating and other boat traffic was minimal, so we had fun racing. Well done to Josh for winning both races.

Josh DSQ in the 1st race, for ROW infringement on Alex just before the finish (no penalty taken). Josh was on a Port tack and Alex on a Starboard tack with a line to the finish line (image below taken one second after the colission). Josh had no line and should have gybed before crossing in front of Alex and forcing a collision.

Well done to all sailors. Fun racing and good sim conditions. This boat is very low lag, so it doesn’t cause any problems itself. We just need to to wind-shadow to be a little more exciting. We’re asking Cory to add that. Feel free to add your vote for that feature.
AFL Sailing
The Australian Football League has come to the North Sea.
Wild Wind RC-44 boats for Peach, Rulette and Conner. Lets hope they get it together to race.
Wild Wind RC-44 Match Racing
We decided to experiment a little with some Match Racing. I mentions this to Hawk in passing a,d he got all excited as he does, so we pulled out the buoys, rings and rule-book and had a go.
We were using the new Wild Wind RC-44R boat that works quite well under these conditions.
We set up the start line thus:
With 2 red circles from which the 2 boats started. We used a short 3 min countdown to save time, so from -00:03:00 to -00:02:00 the boats circled and moved up tp the On Course Side (OCS), but not into the OCS H. Then at -00:02:00 the boats went into the OCS H and down into the Pre-Start Side (PSS) part of the H, this before -00:01:00.
The idea of the Match racing is to force a foul our of your opponent. Do this by making break on of the rules or going over the line early.
Then a race around a small and simple course, up to a windward buoy and down to two leeward buoys that the skippers could choose.
The wind was SW (225°) 15 kts; with 10° variation and up to 3 kt gusts.
We ran two sets of 3 heats because we had 6 skippers.

Trudeau 12 Metre Handicap – Exploits
We have raised the handicap of the Trudeau 12 Metre to 0.76 up from 0.69.
This is due to a number of exploits being used by more sailors and thus the overall times of the boat rising quite dramatically. On the North Sea Olympic course, the average time for the Trudeau 12m 6 months ago was around 18 min, now it is 14 min.
An exploit is usually a design fault that allows the boat to go faster under certain circumstances. They exist in RL sometimes. Is it cheating or not to exploit an exploit, some say yes, but we consider it not cheating, it is a design flaw that has been found to usually increase speed. In SL, cheating is carrying a pocket wind-setter or using an auto trimmer or autopilot of sorts illegally and other things like this..
When an exploit is found, often it is reported to the builder, and most times the builder fixes the problem. In the meantime, we are raising the handicap of the boat to allow for their use.
One sailor I know has stopped sailing the boat due to these exploits being used, another has stopped racing with the boat. It is crazy to see the boom parallel to the boat when running. This is not what the boat was designed for and not in the spirit of racing.
Until these exploits are fixed, they need to be made public, so everyone has the same chance. So we list them here.
- Running with the boom Parallel to the boat and spinnaker up. Increase of around 1 kts.
- When sailing with crew, both skipper and crew hike to the leeward side of the boat. Increase of 2 kts.
- When beating solo, skipper hikes to the center of the boat. Increase in speed.
- When on a reach solo, skipper hikes one position to leeward. Increase in speed.
- When beating, head upwind, then drop to 30° AWA. This results in an increase of speed.
