Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the first North Sea Bandit Regatta for 2023. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Both DNFs, one a piece in each race, were from skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered at the lighthouses on the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in an energetic display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (counter-clockwise) and North Sea 108 courses, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Race Director: Cryptic
Assistant Race Director: Daenerys
Wind: SW (225°) 18kts

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Cilian (Cilian McCullough), with Moon (moonglownight Resident) second, and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Notes:
Riz (RIZLER Rodex) was disqualified (DSQ) during the first race due to sailing with an incorrect racewind, 135° instead of the 225° set by the race director.

Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finising while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as requested by a race director due to a Rule 18.2 Giving Mark Room foul.

18.2 Giving Mark-Room
(b) If boats are overlapped when the first of them reaches the zone, the outside boat at that moment shall
thereafter give the inside boat mark-room. If a boat is clear ahead when she reaches the zone,
the boat clear astern at that moment shall thereafter give her mark-room.

Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook), Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), and Riz (RIZLER Rodex) all finished tied with 17 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Emileigh Starbrook 7 10
ruggeromare Resident 8 9
RedHeadJO Resident 8 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Emileigh’s favor with having a seventh place finish over Rugger’s and Riz’s eighth place finishes as their best.

As Rugger and Riz both have the exact same finishes in both races, an eight point finish in the first race and a nine point finish in the second race respectively, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their remaining tie. Therefore, Rugger and Riz remain tied in ninth place overall.
