Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the first North Sea Bandit Regatta for December, 2022. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the first race, was due to a skipper’s router resetting her internet connection during the first leg of the race. The second DNF, occurring during the second race, was attibuted to a skipper pulling her boat after getting stuck under the land bridge at the island in the Genip region. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on a thrilling display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 02 and North Sea 01 courses, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Three Bandit IFs, two sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Today’s winner was Cilian (Cilian McCullough), with Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.
Race Notes:
Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 10:20. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Therefore, both Emileigh and Moon receive 3.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 3 and 4, added together and divided equally.
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for finishing the race under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as assigned by a race director due to a Rule 10 On Opposite Tacks foul.
“10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.“
