Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the first Cat Fight in The North Sea for December, 2022. With a moderate breeze of 15 knots out of the southwest, rising to a fresh breeze of 18 knots turning from the northwest during the second race, The North Sea regions were relatively well behaved as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Three of those DNFs, recorded during the second race, were due to skippers crashing while crossing over region corners. The remaining DNF, also occurring during the second race, was due to a skipper pulling her boat after she got lost. The crowds that assembled on the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, delighted in the stirring fleet-foiled feline fury on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline Reverse and the North Sea Cat Fight 01 courses, was made up of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, five sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively. One TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet in the first race. The Nacra skipper opted to join a Flying Shadow skipper as her crew for the second race.

Race Director: Cryptic

Wind: SW (225°) 15kts

Wind: NW (315°) 18kts

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Daenerys (blondij Resident), with ViV (vivipezz Resident) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Daenerys (blondij Resident) and ViV (vivipezz Resident) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 13:54. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Daenerys and ViV receive 1.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 1 and 2, added together and divided equally.

  1. Tough sailing day in laggy conditions, but some good action nonetheless. Lots of missed maneuvers, not the best speed, but fun racing and good spirits. Cheers and until next time!
