Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this years Thanksgiving edition of the North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper crashing on a region border crossing. The remaining DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was due to a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, savored a thrilling display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of four Bandit 22 LTEs. One The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadow, one TMS Star Class, and one TMS Sea Boss – Rider rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (counter-clockwise) course, was made up of a small majority of two Trudeau 12 Metres. One WildWind RC-44r, one TMS I-Mocca 60, one TMS Es Paradis, and one TMS Ocean Beach rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre), with Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and the SLCG for helping with race duties.
Race Notes:
Toni (MindMission Resident), Xiao (XiaoMarque01 Resident), and Niem (NiemDarr Resident) all finished tied with 10 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
MindMission Resident | 3 | 7 |
XiaoMarque01 Resident | 4 | 6 |
NiemDarr Resident | 5 | 5 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Toni’s favor with having a third place finish over Xiao’s fourth, and Niem’s fifth place finishes as their best.

Starting slow meant being in the shadow of my competitor, and a bit of lost time in the traffic then. Good race afterwards, in great conditions. Not sure what happened to Moon: we were side by side, then he was no longer there. SL mysteries. Anyway, good race. Until next time! Cheers!
