Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks Cat Fight in The North Sea. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were mostly well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, recorded during the second race, was due to a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The remaining DNF, also recorded during the second race, was from a skipper’s viewer crashing to her desktop while in the middle of a region. The crowds that gathered on the beaches on the islands in the Ziziphus, and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, relished the fresh fleet-foiled feline fire on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long) and the North Sea Extreme course, was made up of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, six sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively. One TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet in the first race. One Flying Shadow skipper opted to switch to his Nacra 17 for the second race.

Race Notes:
Daenerys (blondij Resident) and Max (Max Starostin) both finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
blondij Resident | 1 | 7 |
Max Starostin | 3 | 5 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Daenerys’s favor with having a first place finish over Max’s third place finish as his best.
ViV (vivipezz Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished tied with 9 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
vivipezz Resident | 2 | 7 |
moonglownight Resident | 4 | 5 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in ViV’s favor with having a second place finish over Moon’s fourth place finish as his best.
Perfect to good conditions today indeed. Congrats to Julie: She defended her position well against my comeback at the end of race 2, not letting me close enough to threaten her with my wind shadow on the final run. A question of a few feet maybe. The few feet I lacked several time today. First when I hit a corner during pre-start forcing me to moor to sort things out after I caught up with my boat. Then, the few feet too many I took to tack and take the start: I ended, red with shame, into the Committee boat (Sorry for the scare, Cryptic). After that false start though, my race went nearly perfect with clean-cut lines around the Olympic course for a fast lap. So I was feeling good before race 2. However, I did a so-so start, just behind a group of 4: Dae, Moon, Julie and Max. And again I missed a few feet, maybe meters, as we did the first tack: I ended a bit short, right into Dae’s wind shadow. Being slowed down, I then suffered Julie’s and then Max’s as well. Bummer. Behind this group, I dropped a bit further back. To cut a long story short, I eventually managed to close the gap and might have passed Julie at the last buoy had that leg been a bit longer (again a few meters short!), since I was (much) faster then. But, I had to keep clear behind her around the buoy and then she sailed the final leg faster not letting me any opening. I realized then the other boats have had issues and rejoiced on my final unexpected standing for the race. Thank you all for some fine racing again today. Congrats for the winners, commiserations to the DNFs, and see y’all next time for more fun and friendly Cat Fight. Cheers!
