Calm seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions were generally well behaved as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF was due to a skipper loading gestures for the wrong boat when he started the first race. The second DNF, also occurring during the first race, was due to a skipper pulling his boat after frustration from getting lost on the course late in the race. The third and final DNF, occurring during the second race, was from a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, delighted in a thrilling display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid and North Sea Copacabana courses, was made up of a majority of nine Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook), with Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) second, and Sea (filax Carter) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Notes:
Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) and Sea (filax Carter) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 12:22. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Aymalie and Sea receive 3.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 3 and 4, added together and divided equally.

Sea (filax Carter) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished the second race tied at the finishing line with a time of 17:53.

Therefore, both Sea and Zimtzicke receive 4.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 4 and 5, added together and divided equally.

Niem (NiemDarr Resident) and Cate (Cate Sewell) both finished tied with 18 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
NiemDarr Resident 8 10
Cate Sewell 9 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Niem’s favor with having an eighth place finish over Cate’s ninth place finish as her best.

RegY (RegY Constantine), and Rodney (Rodney McGimsie) both finished tied with 22 points. As they both finished with the exact same finishes in each race, a DNF (Did Not Finish) in the first race, and a DNS (Did Not Start) in the second race, neither Rule A8.1 or A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, RegY and Rodney remain tied in twelfth place overall.
