Calm seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted the first Cat Fight in The North Sea for October, 2022. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, calming to 15 knots during the second race, The North Sea regions were well behaved as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Both DNFs were attributed to a single Skipper as she was sailing in her first races and pulled her boat in the middle of each race from getting lost on the course. The crowds that gathered on the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, and along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on the frantic fleet-foiled feline furor on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 107 and North Sea Bowline Reverse courses, was made up of a majority of seven The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, six sailing single-handed and one crewed respectively. One TMS Nacra 17 rounded out this weeks catamaran fleet in the first race. One Flying Shadow skipper opted for his Nacra 17 in the second race.

Today’s winner was Max (Max Starostin), with Moon (moonglownight Resident) second, and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.
Race Notes:
Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished the first race tied at the finishing line with a time of 8:54. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Therefore, both Aymalie and Moon receive 2.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 2 and 3, added together and divided equally.
Daenerys (blondij Resident) and Erin (clairehunt Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
blondij Resident | 4 | 7 |
clairehunt Resident | 5 | 6 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Daenerys’s favor with having a fourth place finish over Erin’s fifth place finish as her best.
