Calm seas, with nice fleet turnouts, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots out of the southwest, The North Sea regions behaved well as two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skipper pulling her boat after her connection started to fail. The remaining DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was due to a skipper crashing as he crossed over region corners. The crowds that gathered on the beaches of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on a spirited display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Two The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, split evenly with one single-handed and one crewed resptively, one Bandit IF, one TMS Laser One, and one ReneMarine Clever rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was made up of a small majority of three TMS I-Mocca 60s. Two Trudeau 12 Metres, two Bandit 60s, one Bandit 50, one TMS Cafe Del Mar 75, one WildWind Open 60, one WildWin SC-40, and one ACA33 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.
Note: As of the posting of these results, the ReneMarine Clever’s handicap has been adjusted from 0.67, to 0.68. To see the rest of our handicaps and the Google Sheet used to calculate them, please see North Sea Handicap Table.

Today’s winner was Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), with Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) second, and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.
Race Notes:
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was awarded a DNS (Did Not Start) for the small boat portion, as he crossed the startline early and did not circle back around to start properly as alerted both by the startline itself, and race staff. This has been a prescription to North Sea races since their inception in 2014. A sailor crossing the startline early must circle back around, away from the fleet, to start again properly.
Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook), and Aymalie (Aymalie Resident) both finished tied with 5 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
JulieRoyale Resident | 1 | 4 |
Emileigh Starbrook | 2 | 3 |
Aymalie Resident | 2 | 3 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Julie’s favor with having a first place finish over Emileigh’s and Aymalie’s second place finishes as their best.
As Emileigh and Aymalie both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
Emileigh Starbrook | 3 | 2 |
Aymalie Resident | 2 | 3 |
In the last race, Emileigh breaks the tie with Aymalie with her second place finish over Aymalie’s third place finish.
Max (maxgreyman Resident) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished tied with 14 points.
No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
maxgreyman Resident | 1 | 13 |
Nicole Myhre | 5 | 9 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Max’s favor with having a first place finish over Zimtzicke’s fifth place finish as her best.
Alex (Alex0730 Resident), Diana (Dianafra Allen), and Mel (MelannieVeena Resident) both finished tied with 18 points.
Alex0730 Resident | 7 | 11 |
Dianafra Allen | 7 | 11 |
MelannieVeena Resident | 8 | 10 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Alex’s and Diana’s favor with having seventh place finishes over Mel’s eighth place finish as her best.
As Alex and Diana both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to further break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
