Stormy seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With a fresh breeze of 18 knots coming out of the southwest, The North Sea regions had storm clouds overhead as six DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Three DNFs were due to skippers crashing across region corners. Two more DNFs were from one skipper crashing on region crossings in both portions of the regatta. The remaining DNF was from a WildWind’s scripts failing after a skipper bounced off a buoy. The crowds that gathered on the lighthouse observation deck on the island in the Ziziphus region, as well as along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on a great display of fleet racing from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Half Mane course, was made up of a majority of five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, four sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively. Four Bandit 22 LTEs, one Bandit IF, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Shields Class rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Double Loop course, was made up of a majority of three WildWind Open 60s. Two TMS I-Mocca 60s, two Bandit 60s, two Bandit 55s, one ACA33, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.
