Calm seas, with a lighter than usual but still competitive turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. With the summer holiday and vacation season in full swing, the Open Regatta saw a lighter than usual turnout of nine small boats and six big boats. Both fleets were still highly competitive as The North Sea regions behaved well for most, with two DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day. The first DNF, occurring during the small boat portion, was due to a skippers connection failing her. While the second DNF, occurring during the big boat portion, was due to a skipper crashing while crossing over region corners. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, as well as along the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on some spirited fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was made up of a majority of four Bandit IFs, split evenly between two single-handed and two crewed boats respectively. One The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, one Bandit 22 LTE, one TMS Flying Shadow, one ReneMarine Clever, and one Isard Sjogin round out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was made up of a majority of four TMS I-Mocca 60s. One WildWind Open 60, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Director: Cryptic
Assistant Race Directors: Daenerys, and Tamarushka
Wind: SW (225°) 18kts

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), with Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.

Race Notes:
Sirius (Sirius Rosca) was disqualified (DSQ) during the big boat portion for finishing under protest while failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director due to a Rule 11 On The Same Tack, Overlapped foul committed at the start of the race, colloquially known as barging.

11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.

Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) both finished tied with 9 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Emileigh Starbrook 2 7
Sirius Rosca 4 5

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Emileigh’s favor with having a second place finish over Sirius’s fourth place finish as his best.
